Brandon Moreno vs. Alexandre Pantoja UFC 290 flyweight title rematch July

Undisputed flyweight champion, Brandon Moreno will look to avenge a May 2018 decision loss to Brazilian contender, Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 290 – as the two lock horns in a championship rematch. The pay-per-view event is slated to take place on July 8. during International Fight Week at the T-Mobile Arena.

Co-headlining UFC 283 earlier this year in Rio de Janeiro, Moreno managed to bookend his four-fight series with former undisputed champion, Deiveson Figueiredo – landing a third round doctor’s stoppage TKO victory.

Brandon Moreno meets Alexandre Pantoja for the fourth time in combat sports

For Pantoja, the current #2 ranked flyweight contender has enjoyed a three-fight winning run since 2020, most recently handing Alex Perez a neck crank submission loss at UFC 277 in July of last year in the pair’s championship-eliminator. News of Brandon Moreno’s title rematch against Pantoja was first reported by Freak.MMA on Instagram, with ESPN MMA corroborating the report.

“A flyweight title fight between Brandon Moreno and Alexandre Pantoja is set for UFC 290 on July 8. in Las Vegas, UFC Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell confirmed to Marc Raimondi.

First meeting at UFC Fight Night Santiago back in 2018, Pantoja managed to hand Moreno his second consecutive loss under the promotion’s banner with a unanimous decision victory at the Chile event.

The duo initially featured on The Ultimate Fighter 24 back in 2016, with Pantoja once more prevailing with a rear-naked choke submission win in the pair’s Round of 16 exhibition bout.

Prior to his successful title unification win against Figueiredo at the beginning of the year, Moreno struck interim flyweight gold with another rematch win over Kai Kara-France – stopping the New Zealander with a third round body kick at the above-mentioned, UFC 277 event.

A featherweight championship unification bout between champion, Alexander Volkanovski, and interim gold holder, Yair Rodriguez is also expected to feature on the International Fight Week card

Dana White doubtful of UFC Mexico event this year: ‘I don’t know if it’s in the plans’

Despite boasting three promotional championships from Mexico, UFC president, Dana White has confirmed it is unlikely the Octagon returns to the country any time soon, also shutting down a Cinco De Mayo event to boot.

The UFC, who have yet to venture to Mexico since hosting a UFC Fight Night Mexico City card back in September 2019, saw that event end in less than ideal fashion, with a headliner between hometown favorite, Yair Rodriguez and Jeremy Stephens halted due to an opening minute eye poke

Initially claiming the organization would not be returning to the region for a UFC Mexico event, due to crowd trouble following the official ‘No Contest‘ – fans have clamored for a return ever since the crowning of three UFC champions from Mexico.

Firstly, undisputed flyweight kingpin, Brandon Moreno reclaimed his crown with a doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Deiveson Figueiredo in Brazil at UFC 283 in January.

Then, the above-mentioned, Rodriguez struck interim featherweight gold the following month with a submission win against Josh Emmett.

And earlier this month, Lobo Gym staple, Alexa Grasso turned in a huge upset to dethrone Valentina Shevchenko at flyweight, clinching the crown with her own submission victory.

UFC Mexico return unlikely for 2023 schedule

However, despite the emergence of generational talent from Mexico in the form of three Octagon champions, UFC boss, White does not see a return to the country in the near future for UFC Mexico.

“We would obviously love to get back to Mexico and do that [a UFC Mexico card in the country], but I don’t know if it’s in the plans right now,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC San Antonio. We’re building a PI (Performance Institute) down there right now, and wait until you guys see that.”

“We got three Mexican champions,” Dana White continued. “We probably should he heading to Mexico – or at least be doing a Cinco De Mayo [event], but that didn’t work out either.”

Former two-time UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno will bring his brief layoff to an end in the “Great White North” later this year.

The changes keep on coming for the promotion’s return to Edmonton in Canada on November 2. When the card was originally announced, a flyweight showdown between Rose Namajunas and Erin Blanchfield was set as the main event, with heavyweights Derrick Lewis and Alexandr Romanov co-headlining.

But after the latter of those bouts was split in two to create fresh matchups, the UFC Fight Night in Alberta now has a new headline pairing.

UFC CEO Dana White revealed in a social media video this week that Mexico’s Moreno (21-8-2) will make his return in the main event for a rearranged clash against rising contender Amir Albazi (17-1).

Moreno Looks To End Losing Skid, Albazi’s Perfect UFC Record

When he makes the walk this November, Moreno will be looking to break his first losing skid since 2018.

“The Assassin Baby” enjoyed a strong start to 2023, regaining the flyweight gold from longtime rival Deiveson Figueiredo six months on from an interim title win over Kai Kara-France. But as was the case with his first reign, Moreno fell short in his attempt at recording a successful defense, with Alexandre Pantoja emerging victorious from their Fight of the Year war at UFC 290.

The Mexican return this past February for an appearance on home soil, where he was scheduled to do battle with Albazi. But after an injury forced the Iraqi out, Moreno fell on the wrong side of a narrow split decision against replacement opponent Brandon Royval.

While he announced plans to take an extended period away from the cage to recharge, Moreno will be back in action just nine months later, looking for his matchup with Albazi to make it to the cage at the second time of trying.

For “The Prince,” the Nov. 2 headliner marks the opportunity for him to stake his claim for a first shot at title glory on MMA’s biggest stage. The former Brave CF standout has gone 5-0 in the Octagon thus far, most recently outpointing Kara-France in a tight five-round main event at the Apex in June 2023.

With this addition, the fights currently expected to take place at UFC Fight Night Edmonton on Nov. 2 are as follows:

  • Brandon Moreno vs. Amir Albazi (flyweight main event)
  • Erin Blanchfield vs. Rose Namajunas (women’s flyweight co-main event)
  • Derrick Lewis vs. Jhonata Diniz (heavyweight)
  • Pedro Munhoz vs. Aiemann Zahabi (bantamweight)
  • Ariane da Silva vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius (women’s flyweight)
  • Mike Malott vs. Trevin Giles (welterweight)
  • Marc-André Barriault vs. Dustin Stoltzfus (middleweight)
  • Serhiy Sidey vs. Garrett Armfield (bantamweight)
  • Alexandr Romanov vs. Rodrigo Nascimento (heavyweight)
  • Chad Anheliger vs. Cody Gibson (bantamweight)
  • Jamey-Lyn Horth vs. Ivana Petrovi? (women’s flyweight)
  • Caio Machado vs. Brendson Ribeiro (light heavyweight)

Tijuana, Mexico is proud of its hometown star ‘The Assassin Baby’ Brandon Moreno. After getting crowned as the undisputed UFC flyweight champion at UFC 283, another mural of the Mexican-born fighter has been added to the city.

At UFC 283, Brandon Moreno completed a quadrilogy against his rival Deiveson Figueiredo. After four matches, Moreno has walked away with the championship strap.

Mexico’s UFC Champion Brandon Moreno

Brandon Moreno is proud to represent his home nation of Mexico. The UFC has a rising amount of talent in the nation. The 27-year-old fighter recognizes the opportunity for growth. In the UFC 283 post-fight press conference, Moreno said:

“I think as a Mexican, we deserve a pay-per-view again in Mexico City. I think right now we have an amazing position where Yair Rodriguez is fighting in February, Alexa Grasso is fighting in March, and nothing is official but Irene Aldana looks like a really clear possibility for Amanda [Nunes]. So I think this is the year for the Mexicans in mixed martial arts. I’m excited. For sure, I want to go there.” [Transcript courtesy Sherdog]

Growing MMA in Mexico has been a challenge Moreno explained in an interview with UFC, he said:

“The sport is very young in my country, and it’s hard because in Mexico it’s soccer and boxing and that’s it. If you try to do another kind of sport, the road is very, very tough. In history we had a lot of Mexican-American champions like Cain (Velasquez), Henry Cejudo and Tito Ortiz, but a one hundred percent Mexican is different because it’s just boxing and soccer.

Being an inspiration for his Mexican-born countryman means the world to him, he added:

“I have a lot of training partners in my gym that say that I’m an inspiration for them. That is really special for me in my heart.”
