Bryan Barberena, Nate Diaz

Bryan Barberena says that, unlike Nate Diaz, he is a true embodiment of what it means to be willing to fight anyone, anytime.

Prior to this past weekend’s UFC Vegas 44 card, Bryan Barberena was scheduled to face UFC legend Matt Brown in a fight that carried massive Fight of the Night potential. Unfortunately, a COVID-19 contraction forced Brown to withdraw only two weeks out from the brawl. Undeterred, Barberena flew out to Vegas anyway, willing to fight literally anyone the UFC put in front of him.

That person turned out to be the debuting Darian Weeks. After a rocky start, Barberena was able to break down the 28-year-old upstart en route to a unanimous decision victory. This short-notice free-for-all served as another example of Barberena’s identity as a throwback fighter who is always down to scrap, no questions asked.

The same has often been said of Stockton legend Nate Diaz. Like Barberena, Diaz is often praised for his toughness and his non-discriminating willingness to scrap, regardless of the name or location. However, after Diaz publicly refused to fight “rookie” Khamzat Chimaev, Barberena is more confused by Diaz’s behavior than anything, while he is the one who is truly down to fight anyone (h/t MMA Junkie).

“I will fight anybody. Nate Diaz, he’s a stud and whatever, but he’s over here like ‘(Khamzhat) Chimaev, you don’t deserve to fight me.’ Man, I’m here to fight everybody. If your name comes on the contract, I’m signing it. I don’t care whose name is on it – I’m signing it because I’m here to fight everybody. … I’m here to test myself against everybody. Bring it on,” Barberena said during his UFC Vegas 44 post-fight media scrum.

Barberena isn’t the only one to throw shade at Diaz for his rejection of Chimaev. Conor McGregor called Diaz a “bitch” for turning down the fight, and Dana White implied that Diaz simply wants no part of Chimaev.

As for Barberena, the top name he’d be willing to fight next is the same name he expected to fight last Saturday, another “anywhere, anytime” kind of guy, fellow veteran Matt Brown.

“I would like to get the Matt Brown matchup back,” Barberena said. “That was kind of a dream matchup. He’s a legend.”

An exciting matchup for the fans between UFC brawler Matt Brown and Bryan Barberena is set to take make during a UFC Fight Night event on Dec. 4, as first reported by MMA journalist Marcel Dorff. The venue hasn’t been selected yet, but it’s expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, as most Fight Nights have during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brown is coming off of a knockout win over Dhiego Lima at UFC Vegas 29, earning a one-punch finish in the second round. He’s competed against some of the best fighters in the UFC’s welterweight division and is still going strong at 40 years old.

Barberena has lost three of his last four but remains one of the toughest outs in the division. He most recently lost to Jason Witt by majority decision in July and is looking to get back on track in the welterweight picture.

Brown first made his run to the UFC after defeating Matt Arroyo on The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale back in 2008. He followed it up with a string of wins and losses but holds wins over former title challenger Stephen Thompson and UFC legend Diego Sanchez.

Brown faces Barberena, a fan favorite in many eyes of UFC fans. Both fighters come forward with an exciting style that could potentially be an early contender for Fight of the Night.

Along with Brown vs. Barberena, the UFC Fight Night card will also feature a massive light heavyweight bout between rising stars Jamahal Hill and Jimmy Crute. Both are coming off of tough losses at UFC 261 and are looking to end 2021 on a high note.

Both Brown and Barberena desperately need a win for their UFC records and enter December with a lot on the line.

What are your thoughts on Matt Brown vs. Bryan Barberena?

Matt Brown is out of his December 4 bout against Brian Barberena after testing positive for COVID-19.

In September, it was announced that Matt Brown would be facing Brian Barberena in an exciting clash between two UFC veterans. Unfortunately, Brown revealed Tuesday that it is not to be after contracting COVID-19.

“Shitty day today I tested positive for covid so my fight next weekend is off.”

Brown would then provide some extra details about his health status in light of the positive COVID test.

“I was sick af over the weekend but feel better for the most part now. Lost smell today. Did a jog outside today and lungs burned some I thought maybe it was just the cold air but maybe I’m still sick. I’ll get over it quickly and go from there.”

Brown was last seen in the Octagon against Dhiego Lima in June. The 170-pound legend turned back the clock in the second round and uncorked a blistering right hook to finish the contest. In his last fight, Brown demonstrated why his power has carried him through such an illustrious career at the highest level. Prior to that, questions of his age were beginning to surface after losing back-to-back fights against Miguel Baeza, and the recently retired Carlos Condit.

There currently is no word on if the UFC will seek to find a replacement opponent for Barberena or if this fight will be rescheduled.

With Matt Brown vs. Bryan Barberena scrapped, here is an up-to-date lineup for the UFC event on Dec. 4.

  • José Aldo vs. Rob Font
  • Rafael Fiziev vs. Brad Riddell
  • Jimmy Crute vs. Jamahal Hill
  • Brendan Allen vs. Chris Curtis
  • Clay Guida vs. Leonardo Santos

Vicente Luque talks throwing ‘strategy out the window’ in his epic war with Bryan Barberena last Sunday (Feb. 17, 2019) at UFC on ESPN 1.

It was one of the more memorable fights in some time. Both Luque and Barberena left it all in the Octagon on Sunday night. After a “Fight Of The Night” performance like that, you would think everyone in “The Silent Assassins” camp would be stoked.

Well, almost everyone, as Luque explained, because his fiancee was none too pleased that he decided to stop Barberena’s punches with his head just a few weeks before their wedding day.

“I’ve got to ice my face up to look good,” Luque told reporters after the fight (via MMAjunkie). “She’s going to be – she is mad at me. She talked to me right there, she said, ‘What’s going on? What fight was that,”” he explained. “This is MMA. Sometimes you go in there and you get the quick finish. Sometimes it doesn’t happen.”

Both men earned an extra 50K for their efforts on Sunday night. Perhaps Luque can splurge a bit extra on his fiancee during their honeymoon to make up for his facial imperfections.

Luque went on to explain that he had a gameplan for Barberena. But as the Mike Tyson saying goes, everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.

“I knew he was a tough guy,” Luque said. “Obviously when we’re in there, and we hit him with the best shot we have and the guy keeps moving, we don’t expect that, but I knew he was a tough guy and he was going to bring the fight,” he added.

“Once he knocked me down the first time, I said, ‘Hey, I’m going to fight this guy.’ I threw strategy out the window and said, I’m going to fight him,’ and give a show to everybody and show that I’ve got heart and that I’ve got what it takes to be one of the best over here in this division.”
