UFC welterweight Max Griffin is targeting a big name opponent next.
With the damage he inflicted on Brahimaj going viral, Griffin is now looking ahead to a bigger name and has two in particular that he wants — former interim champion Carlos Condit and current ranked welterweight Vicente Luque.
“I have respect for all these guys, but there are some names I need to throw out,” Griffin said after the fight (via MMA Junkie). “Carlos Condit, I’ve always wanted to fight a legend like him. I have so much respect for him. I love that man.
“And Vicente Luque—he’s a beast. He slugs it out and that would be a sick fight.”
In reality, a fight with Luque seems highly unlikely.
The Brazilian is currently ranked No. 10 in the welterweight rankings and is looking to climb up further by facing similarly ranked opponents. Griffin, meanwhile, is unranked and only just snapped a two-fight losing streak.
That said, a fight with Condit is more likely.
The 36-year-old recently snapped a five-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision win over Court McGee last month. He is unlikely to face a ranked opponent anytime soon and it would make more sense for him to face unranked opponents such as Griffin who will be looking to add a legend to their resume.
Given that Griffin prefers to strike rather than grapple, it would certainly be an entertaining contest.
Former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit got back to winning ways in impressive fashion last night and is now eyeing fights against his long-time rivals Matt Brown and Nick Diaz. Former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit got back to winning ways in impressive fashion last night and is now eyeing fights against his long-time rivals Matt Brown and Nick Diaz.
Condit went into his fight against Court McGee at UFC Fight Island 4 on that back of five straight defeats. The 36-year-old hadn’t tasted victory since beating Thiago Alves all the way back in 2015.
‘The Natural Born Killer’ showed no signs of poor form as he dominated McGee over three rounds, even dropping the former TUF winner with a huge, nose shattering hook at the end of round one. Condit ultimately picked up a unanimous decision win before facing media who were keen to hear about who the long-time welterweight contender wants to face next.
Matt Brown immediately took to Twitter post-fight and called for a bout against Condit. The reporters in attendance mentioned ‘Immortal’ and the soon to return Nick Diaz as potential opponents to Condit who seemed ready and will to fight whoever the UFC put in front of him.
“Either one,” Condit said. “Yeah, I mean there are a number of match-ups that are intriguing. (Nick) Diaz, Matt Brown – we’ve been slated to fight several times. I don’t know, we’ll see.
Condit has been scheduled to face Brown twice before but the fight has fallen through. ‘The Natural Born Killer’ was asked if that face would make him hesitant to sign to fight Brown a third time.
“No. Not necessarily,” Condit replied. “But, you know, bubble wrap that dude up. So we make it to the f*cking fight.
Former interim UFC welterweight champion, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ Carlos Condit is back to winning ways for the first time since May of 2015. Former interim UFC welterweight champion, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ Carlos Condit is back to winning ways for the first time since May of 2015.
The veteran 36-year-old looked at his once gleaming best again tonight opposite The Ultimate Fighter victor, fellow veteran, Court McGee – on his way to a unanimous decision (30-27 x3) victory. Utilising both orthodox and southpaw on cue, Condit varied his strikes with kicks and punches, targeting the body and head with aplomb. Making his mark toward the close of the first round, the Albuquerque native scored what seems to be a nasty break of McGee’s nose with a counter right hook, resulting in the fight’s sole knockdown.
Continuning his trend of creative striking beyond the opening frame, Condit turned up the heat and volume in the final round to bring a halt to a dissapointing five-fight slide for the stunning eighteen year veteran.
Below, catch highlights from Condit’s return to the win column against McGee.

Long-time welterweight contender Carlos Condit has become the latest man to call for a fight with Nick Diaz who recently announced his intention to return to the Octagon in 2021.
Condit feels like the pair have unfinished business after they previously fought for the interim welterweight strap in 2012. ‘The Natural Born Killer’ emerged victorious on the night picking up a unanimous decision but many fans disagreed with the judge’s call.
Diaz was named the unofficial winner by a section of fans who believe the Stockton, California native did enough to win rounds one, two and five against Condit who went on to give Georges St-Pierre one of the toughest fights of his reign later that year.
Speaking to MMA Junkie ahead of his fight against Court McGee this coming weekend Condit made his case for a Nick Diaz rematch, he said.
“Oh yeah, it was impossible to ignore, especially after the fight. Yeah, obviously that’s been a thing and that’s a point of interest. I know people want to see that fight. I know a lot of people want to see that fight. I want to see that fight. I think Nick wants that fight. I don’t know if it’s the next one or what he’s trying to do. But if the stars align, that fight should happen.
“That fight is intriguing to me, intriguing to a lot of fans. If I go out there and handle business like I think will on Saturday, that one is definitely in my sight. It’s an interesting matchup, there was controversy, and why not? Why not go out there and settle the score.”
First up, Condit is determined to snap his a five-fight losing streak that started when he lost in a championship fight against Robbie Lawler by the narrowest of margins at UFC 196 in 2016.
“I’m enjoying being out here on fight week again,” Condit said. “The familiarity of the ritual of preparation, the weight cut, and all that. I’m just excited. I have a good opponent. This dude is game, he’s a hard-nose, salty veteran who comes to fight. I think we’re going to put on a hell of a show. I know he doesn’t take a step back and he comes to throw down. I’m super excited about that.”
