Carlos Condit is looking forward to competing in 2020.
The former welterweight title challenger hasn’t been in action since suffering a submission loss to Michael Chiesa at UFC 232 back in December 2018. He was slated to return in December last year against Mickey Gall only to pull out due to a detached retina.
However, longtime Jackson Wink striking coach Brandon Gibson revealed Condit — who is recovering well — is looking forward to fighting this year with a potential fight possibly taking place later in the summer.
“Carlos is doing well,” Gibson told MMA Junkie. “He’s recovering from his injury, he’s continuing his training, and I know he’s definitely looking forward to fighting in 2020.
“He’s ready to sign a bout agreement I’m sure, with a full training camp. I think he’s definitely been in talks to maybe fight later this summer. We’ll see what the plan is. There’s been no offers yet that I know of.”
If Condit doesn’t run things back with Gall, one potential opponent could be fellow divisional veteran Matt Brown.
Although Brown recently suffered a TKO defeat to Miguel Baeza earlier this month, “The Immortal” has spoken of his interest in facing Condit, especially as they were previously booked to face each other two times. Brown had to pull out due to injury on both occasions.
Gibson likes that fight for “The Natural Born Killer”, but it all ultimately depends on what the UFC offers his fighter.
“I think the Matt Brown fight is always an intriguing matchup for Condit,” Gibson said. “They happened to be booked multiple times. I know Matt just fought this past week, but yeah, I think that would be a fan-favorite fight, and I think that would be a very good style matchup for Carlos, as well.
“So I’d definitely be open to that one. But yeah, we’ll see what kind of matchup offers we get from the UFC.”
Condit is currently on a five-fight losing streak with his last win coming against Thiago Alves back in May 2015. Brown, meanwhile, saw a two-fight winning streak snapped following his setback to Baeza.
Do you like the idea of a Condit vs. Brown matchup in 2020?

Former welterweight contender Carlos Condit will return to fighting this year according to his coach Mike Winkeljohn.
Condit hasn’t fought since late 2018 and is currently riding a five-fight losing streak. He was due to return to the octagon against Mikey Gall in December, but a detached retina forced him out of the fight which is yet to be re-scheduled.
Speaking to BJ Penn.com his coach Mike Winkeljohn said Condit now has the fire back and fans should expect to see ‘The Natural Born Killer’ in the cage before the end of this year.
“I think you may very well see Carlos Condit fight this year. He’s training and Carlos has that fire. He’s just a fighter and had some bumps in the road behind the scenes that slowed him down a little bit. But, I think you will see Carlos fight before the end of the year.”
The 35-year-old will be looking for big name and big money fights on his return according to the coach. Despite his losing streak, Condit is a fighter who commands a lot of respect in the welterweight division. The former WEC champion holds signature wins over the likes of Nick Diaz, Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy, and Martin Kampmann. He’ll be looking to add another big name to the list and be rewarded for his efforts, Winkeljohn explained.
“Carlos is all about challenging himself. I haven’t had a conversation with him about it but my guess would be he wants big fights,” he explained. “For him, I want him to get a money fight as I want Carlos Condit to make some big money as he has done so much in the UFC so I’d love for him to get that back. Carlos just wants to fight anybody.”

It looks like Carlos Condit won’t be making the walk to fight Mickey Gall at UFC on ESPN 7 this December. The two welterweights were set for the Washington, D.C. card from the Capital One Arena before news broke that Condit has been forced out.
MMA Junkie was first to report the news. The details behind the nature of Condit’s pull out are unknown as of this writing. The 35-year-old is on a five-fight losing streak at the moment. He last fought in December of 2018 when he was bested by Michael Chiesa via second-round submission.
He was to take on Gall, who has won two of his last four fights inside the Octagon. In Gall’s last appearance, he topped Salim Touahri via unanimous decision back in August. Now, Gall is without an opponent for December, but the UFC is expected to find a replacement for him to fight.
Gall earned his claim to fame when he became the man to welcome ex-WWE star CM Punk to the UFC, easily defeating Punk with a first-round submission. He went on to defeat Sage Northcutt, before suffering losses to Randy Brown and Diego Sanchez.
