UFC welterweight Jake Matthews got back on the win column and is now targeting Carlos Condit for his next fight.

Matthews outpointed Rostem Akman at UFC 243 last night. It puts him at four wins in his last five outings, but even more impressive is the fact that he holds the most UFC wins (8) by an Australian-born fighter.

Although he wasn’t impressed with his performance against Akman, “The Celtic Kid” felt it was necessary given the circumstances:

“It’s hard for the fans to understand, but if he was a top 10 fighter, I would have swung for the fences,” Matthews said (via Sherdog). “This was a very dangerous fight for me. He’s a relative newcomer and I’ve been here for 12 fights.

“I had to show that maturity and experience. I felt completely in control. Most of my fights are a blur, but this one I was aware of everything going on. I’m very happy with that. I got the win, which is the main thing.”

He now wants a step up in competition and that meant calling for a fight with former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit.

Although Condit is booked to face Mickey Gall next in December, and has also lost his last five outings in a row, he is still a huge name and Matthews expects him to get back to winning ways.

“I asked for Carlos Condit this fight, but I know he’s fighting Mickey Gall next,” he added. “So once Carlos is done smashing Mickey, I’d like to have that legend fight.”

Matt Brown and Carlos Condit have been booked to fight each other multiple times, but unfortunately, the matchup never came to fruition. The two were initially set to clash at UFC on FOX 9, and then at UFC on FOX 29, both bookings eventually falling through.

Now, Brown is set to end a two-year layoff and return to the Octagon against Ben Saunders at UFC 245 this December. Then, Condit will fight Mickey Gall at UFC on ESPN 7 in Washington. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Brown discussed why the UFC didn’t match up he and Condit one more time to try and make the scrap finally happen.

“I have no idea,” Brown said. “You’d know better than me. I actually don’t know. All I did was reply yes to an email from (UFC matchmaker) Sean Shelby, and I didn’t even look at who the opponent was. I saw, ‘Do you want to fight?’ That was in the subject line, and I just said yes.”

Of course, the matchup isn’t impossible, and can still happen at some point down the line. Brown says things will have to be reassessed after their respective fights at the end of the year, and perhaps the matchup can finally go down in 2020.

“Of course (I’m interested),” Brown said. “I think me and Carlos we’ve been right here the whole time, and I think we’re in a little bit of different spots now. It certainly would have been better a few years ago. It seems like I get hurt every time we’re supposed to fight, but we’ll kind of see where he’s at after he fights Mickey.

“We’ll see where Mickey’s at, we’ll see where Carlos is at, we’ll see where I’m at and everybody. We’re all in our own piece of the division right now. There’s a whole other part of the division that we need to be focused on. The fights between all of us are fun fights that are kind of building towards something bigger. We’ll have a lot figured out around the December time frame.

“Hopefully everybody gets some money and all of our kids can have a good Christmas and have a Happy New Year, get back to training and bust each other’s noses up next year.”

Anthony Pettis is coming off of a decision loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 241. It was a fight both fighters wanted, and “Showtime” just couldn’t get anything going in the fight. To make matters worse, he broke his foot in the fight.

Now, what is next for Pettis is a big question. He could go back down to lightweight, or he could stay at welterweight. If his coach, Duke Roufus, had any say, he wants him to stay at welterweight. And, he has some intriguing fights for him.

“An interesting fight that I think would be kind of fun is Diego Sanchez and Anthony (Pettis) – two old-school, crazy Latino legends of the sport,” Roufus said to MMA Junkie. “If you want to talk about barnburners, that would be fun.”

Diego Sanchez vs. Anthony Pettis would no doubt be a very entertaining fight between two fan favorites. However, if that fight can’t come together, Roufus would like his pupil to take on former title challenger, Carlos Condit.

“I think former champion Carlos Condit would be fun, especially at 170,” Roufus said. “I like those two fights a lot. We’ll see what happens if it matches up. I mean, now I’d just like to see another fun fight that motivates him to want to keep doing great things.”

That fight seems unlikely to happen as of right now, given the fact Condit was just booked to fight Mickey Gall. But, Roufus thinks both would be fun fights for Anthony Pettis.

However, those fights are if he stays at welterweight, which is not certain. Pettis is still a contender at lightweight, but for Roufus, he thinks Pettis should just be having fun fights and enjoying his career now.

“He happens to be a contender in both divisions now,” Roufus said. “It’s a fun time. It would be great to win a title and stuff like that. But as a career person, it’s always fun to enjoy your job and he’s having a fun time enjoying his job right now – and that’s all he could ask at this stage of his career.”

Welterweight prospect Mickey Gall certainly believes there’ll be a passing of the torch when he faces Carlos Condit next.

Yesterday, it was reported that a matchup between the two 170 pounders was in the works for UFC DC which takes place December 7. While not official yet, it seems we’re just waiting for the UFC’s announcement as Gall took to social media about the matchup.

Posting a fan-made poster of himself and Condit, the New Jersey native had some strong words ahead of his bout with “The Natural Born Killer”:

“There’s a new natural born killer in town,” he wrote on Instagram.

Gall bounced back from his TKO defeat to Diego Sanchez by outpointing Salim Touahri earlier this month. A potential win over Condit would undoubtedly be the biggest of his career.

As for Condit, the former interim welterweight champion is on a five-fight losing skid, having most recently been submitted by Michael Chiesa at UFC 232 last year.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Carlos Condit – “The Natural Born Killer” – is set to make a return to the UFC against Mickey Gall on December 7, at UFC Washington DC, reports MMA Junkie.

The action takes place from the Capital One Arena and will be headlined by a heavyweight tilt between Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris. During Condit’s career, he shared the Octagon with the likes of Georges St-Pierre, Robbie Lawler, Nick Diaz, Tyron Woodley, and many more. He currently trains at JacksonWink MMA alongside the likes of Holly Holm and Jon Jones.

The last time the “Killer” saw action was during UFC 232, where he lost to Michael Chiesa via submission, in the welterweight division. Condit has a total of 43 matches – 30 wins, 13 losses. His last five fights were consecutive loses. Not exactly promising, compared to his opponent, who’s currently one of the more promising prospects in the sport.

Gall, famous for his early-career wins against former professional wrestling star CM Punk and Sage Northcutt, is seen as one of the highest rising fighters in the UFC. He was recuperating from a recent loss against Diego Sanchez at UFC 235. He got back in the win column with a decision against Salim Touahri, at UFC Newark.

Now, Gall will face off against Condit in what will no doubt be the most difficult test of his MMA career. Check out the updated UFC DC card below:
