Charles Oliveira touted as lightweight GOAT over Khabib following UFC 289 win

Off the back of yet another massive victory at UFC 289 last weekend, Charles Oliveira’a status as the greatest lightweight fighter of all time, has been increased tenfold according to bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling – who claims the Brazilian must now be included in conversations including the consensus best, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Co-headlining UFC 289 over the course of the weekend, Oliveira returned to the winner’s enclosure with a triumph against the surging, Beneil Dariush, defeating the Iranian-born grappler with a slew of opening round ground strikes en route to a TKO stoppage win.

As for Khabib, the former undisputed lightweight champion, retired from active competition back in 2020, improving to 29-0 as a professional with a second round triangle submission win over then-interim champion, Justin Gaethje successfully unifying the division crowns.

Charles Oliveira touted as potential lightweight GOAT following UFC 289 win

Touted as a legitimate contender to the status as the greatest lightweight fighter of all time off the back of his stoppage win over Dariush, record-setting finisher, Oliveira, according to the aforenoted, Sterling is continuing to add to his star-studded résumé.

“What’s the criteria? Is it just accolades? Because if it’s just accolades, Charles Oliveira has a pretty damn good résumé,” Aljamain Sterling said on his official YouTube channel. “From title defenses, style points on finishes, been in the game longer. So for me, I think he has to be within that conversation. You have to include Charles Oliveira in that [conversation] against Khabib (Nurmagomedov).”

“I’m really looking at title defenses, and then winning streak as well,” Sterling explained. “Not like your entire career, I’m talking like in the UFC. Getting those separate win streaks in the UFC, it’s very difficult to do. And seeing someone bounce back from an ‘L’ the way that Oliveira has done time and time again in his career, there’s something to be said about that.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Expected to make a return to the Octagon later this year, Oliveira has called for a lightweight title fight rematch with Khabib’s training partner, Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Michael Chandler eyes rematch with Charles Oliveira I want to run that one back UFC

Heaping praise on former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira off the back of his UFC 289 victory over the course of last weekend, division contender, Michael Chandler has claimed that if possible in the future, he would relish the opportunity to fight the Brazilian in a rematch.

Chandler, the current #5 ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he featured on the main card of UFC 281 back in November at Madison Square Garden, suffering a third round rear-naked choke submission loss to former interim champion, Dustin Poirier

Returning to the Octagon at UFC 289 over the course of the weekend, Oliveira managed to return to the winner’s enclosure with a blistering first round win over the streaking, Beneil Dariush, finishing the Iranian-born grappler with a stunning opening frame series of ground strikes en route to a TKO stoppage victory.

Michael Chandler heaps praise on Charles Oliveira following UFC 289

Expected to share the Octagon with former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor next, Chandler, who has served as an opposing coach on The Ultimate Fighter 31 – showered praise on Oliveira’s performance in Canada.

“Guys, Charles Oliveira is an absolute savage,” Michael Chandler said on his YouTube channel. “Charles Oliveira vs. Beniel Dariush; Dariush on a long win streak, Charles Oliveira obviously a ton of fire still in his belly wanting to get that UFC title. Charles Oliveira showed up under the brightest lights, the biggest opportunity, a title eliminator to get him back to a title shot.”

And it remains to be seen if he will get the next title shot against Islam Makhachev, but the way that he fought Saturday night at UFC 289, the dude looks like he is coming back for that title.”

Himself sharing the Octagon with Oliveira in a vacant title fight back in May 2021, Chandler dropped the Sao Paulo native in the opening round with a late knockdown, however, suffered a quickfire second round KO loss to Oliveira in the early goings of the frame.

And maintaining his interest in a future re-run with the promotion’s most prolific finisher, Michael Chandler weighed up a possible rematch with Oliveira in the near future.

“I hope to share the Octagon with him again, eventually,” Michael Chandler explained. “I would like to run that one back, obviously. But the way he looked that night against Dariush [at] UFC 289, was abolutelt masterful. Hat’s off to you, Charles. God bless. See you at the top.”

Charles Oliveira’s stunning fight-ending sequence against Beneil Dariush was not luck or even a happy accident. It was a clear case of practice makes perfect.

Returning to the Octagon for a co-main event clash with streaking lightweight contender Beneil Dariush, ‘Do Bronx’ got back into the win column in a big way, scoring a first-round TKO against ‘Benny’ all set up by a perfectly-timed straight-right, head-kick combo that ultimately put Dariush on the mat and down for the count. In a video clip shared by Roobet on YouTube, Oliveira can be seen practicing the very combo backstage that would lead him to a highlight-reel finish on Saturday night.

Charles Oliveira Eyes Rematch with Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi

With his impressive first-round finish at UFC 289, Charles Oliveira has his sights on running back his October 2022 meeting with reigning lightweight world champion, Islam Makhachev. ‘Do Bronx’ saw his four-year unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of the Dagestani Destroyer during their UFC 280 showdown.

“I don’t need to send a message. Last time, you saw ten percent of me. Now, you saw 120% of me. The champion has a name, and it’s Charles Oliveira. And you know what? Dana, I’m the next one (for the title),” Oliveira said in his post-fight interview.

“You want me to fight him in his house? I’ll go. I’m ready. Let’s do it.”

Islam Makhachev is expected to return in October as the promotion heads back to Abu Dhabi for UFC 294. Makhachev plans on defending his title at the event, but it may not be in a rematch with Charles Oliveira. Makhachev has already expressed a desire to defend his title against someone he has never met inside the Octagon. That has led many fans to look toward July’s highly anticipated scrap between former interim titleholders Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

The winner could very well find themselves with a third, and likely final UFC title opportunity in Abu Dhabi before Oliveira gets his chance to reclaim the 155-pound crown in early 2024. However, if Dana White gets his way, it will be Oliveira stepping inside the Octagon with Makhachev this October.

Charles Oliveira now deserves title rematch with Islam Makhachev Javier Mendez UFC 289

Ahead of UFC 289, American Kickboxing Academy head coach, Javier Mendez had claimed that even with a victory – Charles Oliveira would likely not deserve a title rematch with his student, Islam Makhachev, however, the Brazilian has now been touted as next in line for a title fight according to Mendez.

Co-headlining UFC 289 over the course of the weekend, Charles Oliveira managed to return to the winner’s enclosure with a first round win over the surging, Beneil Dariush – finishing the Kings MMA staple with a barrage of opening frame ground strikes.

The victory propelled the Sao Paulo finisher back to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since October of last year, having previously dropped a second round arm-triangle submission loss to Makhachev at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, UAE in the pair’s vacant title showdown.

Immediately calling for a title fight rematch with Makhachev following his success against Dariush, Oliviera was issued a reminder of how their first matchup played out by the Russian – who claimed there was “levels to this game”.

Javier Mendez now claims Charles Oliveira deserves a title rematch with Islam Makhachev

And despite initially denying Oliveira should fight for gold with a win over Dariush, the above-mentioned, Mendez has since claimed Makhachev should fight the Brazilian later this year now in a certain tune change.

“I didn’t know who was gonna win [at UFC 289], but I was crossing my fingers it was gonna be Beneil (Dariush),” Javier Mendez told Submission Radio. “I for sure did not think Charles (Oliveira) was gonna be that impressive in victory. I didn’t think he was gonna be able to do it like he did. I thought a great performance was gonna put him in the talks, but I bypassed that. Maybe it’s because I wanted Beneil to win, I don’t know. But I should not have underestimated how great he is as a champion.”

“I feel that in my opinion, Charles has earned the right to be number one in line for it [title shot],” Mendez explained. “What the UFC feels is different, but from what I see, I don’t see how [Oliveira doesn’t get a title fight next]. Do I think he’s done enough? Yeah, I think he has.”

Furthermore, UFC leader, Dana White also expressed his interest in booking a title rematch between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira later this annum

Charles Oliveira opens as betting favorite over Alexander Volkanovski UFC 289

Off the back of his stunning first round stoppage victory at UFC 289 over the course of the weekend, former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has opened as a decent betting favorite to defeat featherweight kingpin, Alexander Volkanovski – as bookies take money on a potential fight between the duo.

Oliveira, who defended his status as number one contender at 155 pounds in the co-main event of UFC 289 over the course of the weekend, managed to turn in his stunning twentieth stoppage victory under the promotion’s banner, taking out the surging contender, Beneil Dariush with a barrage of first round ground strikes in Vancouver, Canada.

And as for Volkanovski – pre-occupied with a featherweight title unification fight against interim gold holder, Yair Rodríguez next month atop a marquee UFC 290 card, most recently suffered his first Octagon defeat against common-foe, Islam Makhachev in February of this year.

And off the back of his roughshod run through Dariush in the co-main event of UFC 289, Charles Oliveira has opened as a sizeable -140 betting favorite on many markets to defeat the +120 betting underdog, Volkanovski.

Non GamStop betting sites can also offer betting and wagering on many other events including combat sports, whether punters fancy betting on outright winners or other potential prop bets.

A former featherweight himself, Oliveira came closest to securing a title shot at the weight class back in 2016 – suffering a guillotine choke submission loss to former lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis in a pivotal divisional clash.

However, striking eventual gold back in 2020, Oliveira managed to win the vacant lightweight title in a rallying performance against Michael Chandler – stopping the Missouri veteran with a stunning second round KO.

Defending the lightweight title just once, Charles Oliveira submitted former interim gold holder, Dustin Poirier with a standing rear-naked choke in December of that year.

And despite dropping his championship to the scales in May of last year at UFC 274, Charles Oliveira continued his undefeated run with a first round submission win over title challenger, Justin Gaethje in Phoenix, Arizona.

Setting up his unsuccessful lightweight title siege against Makhachev back in February with a third career win over common-foe, Max Holloway in July of last year during International Fight Week, Volkanovski fell short in his bid to beat the Russian and become a two-weight champion held simultaneously.

Turning in a record-setting performance against Dariush in ‘The Great White North’ over the course of the weekend, Charles Oliveira landed a jaw-dropping nineteenth post-fight bonus with his TKO stoppage – landing a Performance of the Night bonus.

Ahead of the fight, Sao Paulo grappler, Oliveira had already separated himself as the most prolific submission artist in Octagon antiquity, and the outright pacesetter for stoppage wins in the history of the UFC.

Eyeing a title rematch with Makhachev himself before the close of the year, Charles Oliveira has been touted as the rightful contender to the throne next by UFC leader, Dana White to boot – which is sure to help the Brazilian’s claim for a championship chance next time out.

Dana White eyes Islam Makhachev Charles Oliveira rematch next UFC 289 makes sense

Off the back of his stunning first round win against Beneil Dariush last night at UFC 289, Charles Oliveira may have punched his ticket for a title rematch at the lightweight limit with rival, Islam Makhachev – with promotional boss, Dana White chomping at the bit for the potential re-run.

Co-headlining at the Rogers Arena in his Octagon return last night, Oliveira turned in a first round stoppage win over the streaking Dariush, handing the Iranian-born grappler a ground strikes TKO loss following a savage swarm at the Octagon fence, showing off his full striking arsenal to boot.

Referring to himself as the champion at the lightweight limit, Oliveira, the current #1 ranked contender and former undisputed champion, called for a title rematch with Makhachev in the immediate aftermath of his stoppage success, leading to a response from the American Kickboxing Academy mainstay as a result.

Previously sharing the Octagon with Makhachev at UFC 280 last October in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Oliveira suffered a second round arm-triangle submission loss to the former, as the duo battled for the vacant lightweight title.

Dana White plays up Islam Makhachev, Charles Oliveira title rematch

And while remaining coy on a potential future rematch between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira prior to the Brazilian’s exploits at UFC 289, White has now claimed that the rematch is the most logical fight next.

“He (Charles Oliviera) looked like a world-beater tonight, and I’m excited for him and Islam (Makhachev) fight again,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC 289. “It’s the thing that makes sense. I’ll tell you on Tuesday. But yeah, I mean, let’s not play games; that fight makes sense. That’s the fight that should happen. And I’m excited to see it again.”

“There’s a lot of things that go into consideration for the next [title] fight,” White explained. “I mean, I’m sitting here talking to you about him [Charles Oliveira] right now, and I don’t even know what’s wrong with him. He’s in medicals. I don’t know where he’s at and what he’s got planned over the summer. The list joes on and on of things that factor into how fights are made. But I’m just telling you right here right here that is a fight I’d like to see again.”
