UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley can’t wait to get his hands on Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

Weeks removed from his shocking second-round knockout of Aljamain Sterling to claim his first world title, ‘Sugar’ is already chomping at the bit to get back inside the Octagon and take out the only man that has ever handed him a loss. No official announcement has been made, but O’Malley seemingly confirmed the rematch on social media, stating that he can’t wait to beat up ‘Chito’ again.

I can’t wait to beat up Chito again,” O’Malley wrote on X.

Despite What Sean O’Malley Likes to Think, ‘Chito’ Vera Handed Him His First Loss via an Opening Round TKO

The statement is certainly an odd one considering Sean O’Malley has never actually beaten up ‘Chito’ Vera. In fact, it was ‘Chito’ who did the beating during their brief encounter at UFC 252 in 2020.

Just past the two-minute mark of the matchup, Vera landed a calf kick that clearly compromised O’Malley’s leg. ‘Sugar’ struggled to stay upright and eventually collapsed onto the canvas with 30 seconds to go in the opening round. Vera jumped on O’Malley and delivered a series of elbows, forcing Herb Dean to step in and call for the stoppage.

Despite blatantly losing the bout, Sean O’Malley insists that he is 17-0, even noting it on his X profile, and has attempted to discredit Vera’s win claiming it was the result of an injury. Unfortunately for O’Malley, the injury occurred because Vera landed a perfectly placed calf kick.

Ever since that night, ‘Sugar’ insisted that he would one day run it back and get retribution for the defeat. Now sitting as the king of the 135-pound division, Sean O’Malley has the power to make that long-awaited rematch a reality.

Where that leaves top-five contender Merab Dvalishvili is anyone’s guess, but it sounds like Dana White is more than willing to let the Georgian fight elsewhere given his refusal to compete against his close friend and former champion Aljamain Sterling.

Sean O'Malley welcomes title rematch with Marlon Vera ahead of UFC 292

Sean O’Malley is looking to avenge his only career loss as his first defence as champion.

O’Malley is set to challenge Aljamain Sterling for his bantamweight title in the headlining bout of UFC 292 on August 19. ‘Sugar’, will look to fulfil the success that many tipped him for when he first burst onto the scene.

While O’Malley certainly possess a high-level skillset, arguably his greatest weapon his the confidence and self-belief that he has. The 28-year-old has always believed that he would reach the summit of the sport, at times appearing arrogant and cocky, O’Malley has not been one to shy away from outlining the future.

Sean O’Malley wants Marlon Vera rematch

So it wouldn’t be surprising that O’Malley is already planning ahead, and wants his first defence of the 135lb title to be against Marlon Vera. Vera handed O’Malley his only career defeat at UFC 252 back in 2020.

“I saw Chito did an interview, with I think it was The Schmo, saying if he beats Pedro [Munhoz] and I beat Aljo, [we could fight at] MSG in November. I would say, whoa, whoa, whoa, December on Conor [McGregor] vs. [Michael] Chandler. Me vs. Chito rematch, said O’Malley. (H/T MiddleEasy)

However, O’Malley is aware that he has a huge task at hand in Sterling. The reigning champion will be looking to successfully defend his title for the fourth time against O’Malley after beating Henry Cejudo earlier this year.

“Can’t look past Aljo, obviously,” O’Malley said. “Dude is a beast, best bantamweight currently in the world. We’re locked in, been locked in for a long time. This has been the longest camp. This is the first time I felt like I haven’t gotten burnt out in camp, which is weird.”

Who wins the rematch, Sean O’Malley or Marlon Vera?

Aljamain Sterling, UFC bantamweight champion, recently revealed that he continues to deal with the torn bicep injury that has plagued him for almost a year now. The bantamweight division is objectively one of the most competitive and exciting in the sport and having an inactive champion impacts the progress of the division.

Aljamain Sterling (22-3) had two fights in 2022, and another title defense against Henry Cejudo seemed to be on the cards for this year. However, the news of the injury and Aljo’s desire to take more time off sparked a tidal wave of reactions in the MMA community.

Via Twitter, current #4 ranked bantamweight Chito Vera had a simple, yet hard-hitting reaction:

In addition to Vera, current #1 ranked bantamweight and fan-favorite Sean O’Malley had to throw in his two cents:

As the #1 contender in the division without a champion, O’Malley comes to a logical conclusion.

Clearly, Aljamain’s inactive status has the top bantamweights concerned and looking for the title to be vacated. The near future of the bantamweight division will heavily depend on the matchmaking that follows, and the result of the highly anticipated Vera vs. Sandhagen bout coming up on February 18th at the UFC Apex.

Will Aljamain Sterling’s injury and inactive status lead to him getting stripped of the belt? What do you think the UFC will do with the bantamweight division as a response to this?
