Chris Weidman is not sure if he will face Jon Jones next with a win over Dominick Reyes. However, he is motivated by the challenge of shocking the world again.

Weidman makes his light heavyweight debut at UFC Boston later this month when he meets Reyes in the headliner. Many believe the winner of the bout will challenge Jones for the 205-pound title next.

However, it’s possible a win for Weidman could also result in him being matched up with a few other contenders before getting that title shot. That is fine by the former middleweight champion as he believes he and Jones are destined to meet:

“It doesn’t matter the division, I’m comfortable against anybody inside that cage,” Weidman told Submission Radio recently. “And obviously Jon Jones being the champ, he’s the guy that I’m gunning for and he’s the guy I kind of always wanted to fight. When I was even 185-pound champion, I knew at some point we were going to fight, and so I see that at some point.

I don’t know if it’s going to be directly after this next fight. I mean, I’d love for it to be, but I’m focused on Dominick. So, we’ll see what happens. I’m just focused on going out there and just make a statement, and we’ll see what the UFC wants to do.”

Shocking The World Twice

Weidman became middleweight champion in 2013 when he shocked the world by knocking out Anderson Silva. “The All-American” has a chance to repeat history against Jones should they meet. And that’s something that Weidman wants to add to his legacy:

“Being the guy that shocks the world, not once but twice, against what people think are the greatest of all time, and against someone that most people think can’t even be beaten,” he added. “And that’s where Anderson Silva was when I fought him and this is where Jon Jones is right now, and so that motivates the hell out of me. That’s the legacy I want.”

Interestingly, Jones has not looked the best in recent times. He defended his title against Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos but would win lackluster decisions in doing so. And for Weidman, he’s seeing more and more ways to beat Jones:

“I don’t think he’s looked that good, I don’t think he’s looked as dangerous,” he explained. “He’s not finishing, and I see there’s a lot of… he’s great, but I see there’s definitely holes in there.

I always believed there’s a blueprint to beat him. You see it a little bit more, but I always knew he’s beatable, and I think if it was a guy like me with power in the hands and also the wrestling that’s better and jiu-jitsu. So, I think that’s really I take it to him. But no one’s been able to do that yet. He’s done a great job, he adjusts really well in there. So, that’s the goal, is to get in there with him.”

Dominick Reyes will welcome Chris Weidman to the light heavyweight division in the main event of UFC Boston.

The stakes will be high for both men. Should Reyes win the fight, he says he has been promised a title shot against Jon Jones. Meanwhile, should Weidman win, he would return to the win column and be right in the mix for title contention.

“Absolutely. A win over Chris Weidman guarantees me a title shot. He is a former champion and I have beaten two former title challengers,” Reyes said backstage at UFC 241.

“Now I am beating champs, the only thing left is to take out the champ of my division after I beat Chris. That is my projection. I’m 5-0 in the UFC, I’ll be 6-0 and 12-0 overall. What argument is there?”

Reyes is coming off of a split-decision win over Volkan Oezdemir back in March. Before that, he beat Ovince Saint Preux by decision, Jared Cannonier by TKO, Jeremy Kimball by submission, and Joachim Christensen by TKO. The 29-year-old is currently ranked fourth in the light heavyweight division.

Reyes could very well be getting the next shot given the state of the 205-pound division. The division always needs new contenders, but before he can get a title shot, he must get past Weidman first.

Its been a rough stretch inside the Octagon for former 185-pound champion Luke Rockhold.

The Californian’s chin has been suspect in his last several fights, as Rockhold dropped three of his last four bouts via knockout. In the one fight he did win during that four-fight stretch, a second-round TKO win over David Branch, Rockhold got stunned in that contest as well.

His latest outing resulted in a second-round knockout loss in his light heavyweight debut to Jan Blachowicz. Now, the likes of UFC President Dana White are suggesting Rockhold consider retirement. The prospect of Rockhold moving up to light heavyweight was especially exciting because it brought about the possibility of a long-awaited rematch with old foe Chris Weidman.

The pair initially met back in 2015, where Rockhold became the first man to defeat Weidman in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition to win the UFC middleweight crown. Now, both men have jumped up to 205 pounds, but with Rockhold now off another knockout loss, his fighting days are in doubt.

Weidman – who has yet to make his light heavyweight debut – recently spoke on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” and offered his thoughts on the subject. “The All American” described seeing Rockhold’s latest knockout loss as “bittersweet.” (via MMA Junkie)

“To be honest it was a little bittersweet,” Weidman said. “I never like to see anybody get hurt even though me and Luke have had a lot of issues back and forth for a long time, and that’s the one guy I really wanted to get a fight with him and get that one back. Your first loss always seems to hit home the most, so that’s the one I wanted back.

“It’s kind of bittersweet to see him go out there (because) I didn’t think he looked good. I thought he was slow, tired and to see him get knocked out like that again, he’s been off for so long already.

“I was supposed to fight him back in November and he pulled out and then he was off until just recently so I don’t know what’s up for him next but one part of me is like, ‘I want to be the guy that’s in there with him,’ but now the other part of me is like, ‘I don’t know if he’s going to be around much longer and whether he’s going to retire or not.’”

Weidman will make his light heavyweight debut against talented top-ranked prospect Dominick Reyes. The pair will meet in the main event of UFC on ESPN 6 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on October 18.
