Former UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman is targeting one final push to reclaim his old title before hanging up the gloves for good.

Chris Weidman has been a staple of the UFC’s 185lb division for many years now, having claimed the title by defeating the legendary Anderson Silva back in 2013. After defending the belt against Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort, Weidman would come up short against Luke Rockhold at UFC 194: Aldo vs. McGregor.

Since then, the ‘All American’ has struggled with form, going 2-5 in the promotion. His most recent fight ended in disaster, when he took on Uriah Hall at UFC 261. Hall would check an early leg kick from Weidman, leading to the American shockingly breaking his shin bone, in one of the most graphic injury TKO’s in UFC history. The loss was bizarrely reminiscent of Weidman’s second victory over the aforementioned Anderson Silva, leading many to claim there was a curse being passed on from fighter to fighter.

Unsurprisingly, such an injury would take a long amount of time to recover from. Chris Weidman has been out of action since early 2021, but is now nearing full fitness once again. It was recently announced that he has been booked for a grappling match against Owen Livesey at Polaris 23.

However, this is only the beginning for Weidman. He now plans to return in full force, and mount another title run to reclaim his old belt. Speaking with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, the ‘All American’ laid out his goals for his UFC return:

“I’m not coming back to be a B-rated fighter or a gatekeeper or anything like that,” Chris Weidman said. “I went through all this hell not to just comeback and be like that. I’m going to come back and try to get back what is mine, try and get that belt.”

“After analyzing these guys and watching the middleweight division these last two years, with everyone at the top of the division, I don’t think there’s any reason why I can’t beat those guys. I’m excited to work my way up and get there soon.”

“I have a lot of work to do, and I’m excited for the challenge. I’m not putting myself through this crap just to come back and like fight some guys that I know I can beat or have a big name fight. I’m trying to shock the world again. There’s not going to be too many people that are thinking I can come back, and that excites me. It puts a chip on my shoulder.” (H/T MMA Junkie)

Middleweight Bruno Silva has been suspended from active competition, per an announcement from Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD), the anti-doping partner of the UFC.

Silva, who last fought at UFC Fight Night Atlantic City in a loss to former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, has accepted a six-month ban from competition. Though Weidman got the win in New Jersey that night, he was severely unamused by Silva’s failure.

And while no explanation has been given by Silva for the test failure, Weidman says he was told it could have been “microdosing anabolics.”

Bruno Silva Suspended For Violating UFC Anti-Doping Policy, Chris Weidman Makes Accusation

Weidman’s win in Atlantic City brought plenty of controversy in the fight’s finishing sequence. The American, it originally seemed, was able to force Silva to collapse to the mat and overwhelm him with ground-and-pound. It would have been Weidman’s first finish since his submission of Kelvin Gastelum in 2017.

The state’s athletic commission, however, overturned the result to a unanimous technical decision upon seeing that Silva was poked in both eyes during the sequence.

Weidman’s win over Silva was his first victory since defeating Omari Akhmedov in August 2020, as well as his first victory in his second fight since coming back from his broken leg.

Silva’s suspension is retroactive to April 11, meaning he can return to competition beginning October 11.

Ex-UFC champion Chris Weidman questions Paddy Pimblett: ‘He’s either completely delusional or it’s a gimmick’

Chris Weidman Paddy Pimblett

Former UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman has argued that promotional lightweight contender, Paddy Pimblett should have been on the wrong side of last weekend’s UFC 282 scorecard against Jared Gordon – as wide as 30-27, in fact, before questioning if he’s just delusional or if he’s honing a gimmick.

Weidman, a former undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC, has yet to return to the Octagon since he suffered a gruesome compound fracture of his left tibia and fibula in a first round loss to Uriah Hall in April of last year.

As for Liverpool grappler, Pimblett, the Next Generation MMA staple managed to improve to 4-0 under the banner of the UFC last weekend in the co-main event of the final flagship event of the year for the organization.

Nabbing a 29-28 unanimous decision win on all three judge’s scorecards, Pimblett’s triumph over Gordon was immediately called into question, with the majority of onlookers within the community scoring the bout in favor of the Queens native.

However, following the win, Pimbeltt claimed that bout was no way near as close as viewers made out – labelling them as “haters”. And since then, Baldwin favorite, Weidman has questioned if the former Cage Warriors champion is simply just madly delusional, or simply playing to a gimmick.

“Take away the fighting for a second, Paddy (Pimblett) is just confusing the hell out of me,” Chris Weidman said on Daniel Cormier’s YouTube channel. “I don’t know. I just want to know, is it a gimmick? Like him jumping on the mic right after that he gets the decision when I thought he definitely lost 30-27.”

“That being said, I don’t know how if it’s confidence or a gimmick,” Chris Weidman explained. “Like it’s either he’s completely delusional, or it’s a gimmick, and if it’s a gimmick, all power to him, I bow down to him, you’re doing a great job. But if he’s that delusional, he’s out of his mind.”

Pimblett also claimed during fight week that he would have provided a sterner challenge to lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 than former titleholder, Charles Oliveira mustered – leading to further confusion from Weidman.

“For him to think that he could give a good match to (Islam) Makhacehv and compare himself to Charles Oliveira when he was getting rag-dolled by a guy, Jared Gordon, who I have a lot of respect for, but he’s a small 55-er and he’s talking about Makhachev whose speciality is wrestling.” Chris Weidman said. “And he’s talking about Oliveira whose speciality is monster dudes, whose speciality is with the ground game and so I don’t understand where he’s getting this from. How can he talk like that?” (Transcribed by MMA News)
