UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson says former middleweight champion Chris Weidman is back in the gym after suffering a nasty leg break earlier this year.
Thompson and Weidman are good friends and former teammates during their respective times in the UFC. Weidman has been sidelined for months since his fight against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 ended just seconds into the fight as his leg collapsed from underneath him.
During an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA’s James Lynch, Thompson revealed that Weidman is still focused on a return to the octagon and is back to training in the gym. He’s been involved in Thompson’s fight camp for his fight against Belal Muhammad on Dec. 18.
“The rod they put in his shin was too long, so he had to do another surgery,” Thompson said. “It’s crazy how fast this guy heals up. You’ll see him back in the cage pretty soon. He’s back in the gym training and he’s been a part of my camp.”
Chris Weidman Is Working Towards A Potential UFC Comeback
Weidman is desperately looking to get back in the win column after losses in six of his last eight fights. He hasn’t earned a victory since defeating Omari Akhmedov by a unanimous decision.
Weidman attempted a brief run at light heavyweight that didn’t go his way, as he suffered a first-round knockout to former light heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes. It’s been a steady decline for the former middleweight champion since losing his title to Luke Rockhold at UFC 194.
It’s unclear when and who Weidman will fight in his return to the octagon, but he’s sounded relatively optimistic about his chances. An immediate rematch against Uriah Hall could take place, or Weidman could opt to make a statement against another rising middleweight contender.
