UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson says former middleweight champion Chris Weidman is back in the gym after suffering a nasty leg break earlier this year.

Thompson and Weidman are good friends and former teammates during their respective times in the UFC. Weidman has been sidelined for months since his fight against Uriah Hall at UFC 261 ended just seconds into the fight as his leg collapsed from underneath him.

During an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA’s James Lynch, Thompson revealed that Weidman is still focused on a return to the octagon and is back to training in the gym. He’s been involved in Thompson’s fight camp for his fight against Belal Muhammad on Dec. 18.

“The rod they put in his shin was too long, so he had to do another surgery,” Thompson said. “It’s crazy how fast this guy heals up. You’ll see him back in the cage pretty soon. He’s back in the gym training and he’s been a part of my camp.”

Chris Weidman Is Working Towards A Potential UFC Comeback

Weidman is desperately looking to get back in the win column after losses in six of his last eight fights. He hasn’t earned a victory since defeating Omari Akhmedov by a unanimous decision.

Weidman attempted a brief run at light heavyweight that didn’t go his way, as he suffered a first-round knockout to former light heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes. It’s been a steady decline for the former middleweight champion since losing his title to Luke Rockhold at UFC 194.

It’s unclear when and who Weidman will fight in his return to the octagon, but he’s sounded relatively optimistic about his chances. An immediate rematch against Uriah Hall could take place, or Weidman could opt to make a statement against another rising middleweight contender.

UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson has revealed that former middleweight champion Chris Weidman has returned to training.

Weidman has been out of action since suffering a brutal injury at UFC 261 in April this year. Having gone 1-5 after defending his 185-pound gold for the third time against Vitor Belfort in 2015 and extending his unblemished record to 13-0, the New York native rebounded against Omari Akhmedov last August.

Looking to make a charge back towards title contention, Weidman was matched up with Uriah Hall on the main card of the UFC’s first event in front of a sold-out crowd in over a year. Unfortunately for the fans in attendance, they witnessed one of the promotion’s worst injuries. After just 17 seconds, the 37-year-old suffered a gruesome broken leg after throwing the very first strike of the fight.

Thompson Has A Former Champion Back In His Camp

After multiple surgeries, Weidman is now deep into his recovery, and is even back in training, according to his brother-in-law Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The perennial welterweight contender recently appeared on Submission Radio to discuss his upcoming second fight of 2021.

Thompson had hoped to jump close to a title shot when he faced Gilbert Burns at UFC 264 in July. However, the veteran was unable to keep the fight on the feet, and fell to a unanimous decision defeat against the Brazilian. Despite the disappointing setback, “Wonderboy” says he had no issue getting over it, and is excited to bring a new mindset and strategy to his next outing, which will come against Belal Muhammad at the UFC’s December 18 event.

“It was easy (to move on from the Burns loss). Number one, my first mistake fighting out there with Gilbert was not keeping him on his heels. I was kind of hesitating too much… I’ve made some adjustments with my takedown defense and my reaction time; being a little bit more aggressive, keeping him (Muhammad) on his heels.”

One man who’s sure to aid Thompson’s takedown defense is Weidman. “Wonderboy” revealed that his compatriot is back in training, and will be heavily involved in his ongoing camp.

“You learn, man. It was easy for me. I’m excited about this fight, and I’m confident right now in my takedown defense. I’ve got Chris Weidman coming in. Chris Weidman’s back y’all. He’s back in training, he’s gonna be helping me out for this camp, so I’m excited.”

Despite falling down the queue for an opportunity to dethrone Kamaru Usman, Thompson is still determined to mount a late charge to the welterweight mountaintop. If the 38-year-old is to do so, he’ll have to get past fan-favorite Muhammad next month.

Who do you think will have their hand raised on December 18, Stephen Thompson or Belal Muhammad?

Conor McGregor seems to have made another enemy in Chris Weidman. Recently McGregor posted a meme of himself, Weidman, and Anderson Silva all with broken legs. The nature of the photo was suggesting that McGregor has been tougher through his rehab from his leg break than the other two men. Weidman took his frustration with McGregor out in his Won’t Back Down Podcast. (h/t Sportskeeda).

“He just put up some meme thing, I guess, you know,” Weidman said. “It’s a picture of me face down after I broke my leg, Anderson Silva with him screaming in pain when he broke his leg, and then it’s a picture of Conor McGregor. His leg’s broken. He’s talking to Joe Rogan. And he writes something like, ‘It’s not about what happens to you in life. It’s about how you deal with it moving forward.’ And it’s kind of like a slap in the face to me and Anderson Silva, like he handled pain and adversity in that moment better than we did.”

Weidman didn’t just stop at the attack on himself. He aired his frustrations with McGregor as a whole. Weidman was unhappy with the way McGregor has been acting and the way he verbally disrespected the families of his opponents such as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier.

“I think you summed that up perfect. I just don’t know, like, you’ve got kids. You’ve got people who look up to you. How do you explain this to your kids? The way you acted, you know, punching this old guy in the face, then the DJ; it doesn’t stop. ‘Oh, I’m sorry to this guy. Then I’m sorry to that guy,” Weidman said. “You know, then I’m saying this about Khabib’s dad and Khabib’s mom and then this about Poirier’s wife.’ He has gone as low as you could possibly go – When it comes to dirtbag status, just the lowest of the low.”

Weidman suffered his broken leg back in April and has undergone surgeries to correct it. He is healing up and does not have a timeline yet as to when he can return to the UFC.

McGregor Implies Tougher Response To Leg Break Than Silva and Weidman

Conor McGregor is apparently taking aim at Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman’s toughness.

Conor McGregor is willing to attack any fighter at any time on social media. The Irish fighter is known to be a very outspoken person both live and on Twitter. His latest social media attack is targeted at Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman. McGregor posted a picture of all three men during their in-Octagon leg-breaks and is insinuating that he is the toughest of the bunch.

“Life is not what happens to you but how you handle what happens to you,” McGregor wrote.

McGregor comparing his leg injury to that of Anderson and Weidman may be a bit off. The injuries to Silva and Weidman appeared to be much more severe. They both seemed to break in half and both needed multiple surgeries to fix. McGregor has also undergone surgery and seems to be on the mend.

Since his injury, McGregor has been positive in his spirits and is planning a comeback when fully healed. The injury happened roughly four months ago at UFC 264. McGregor claims to have known about a compromised leg coming into the fight with Dustin Poirier.

McGregor has shown videos on his social media of himself back in the gym preparing for his come back. Despite being on the sidelines, he continues to ruffle the feathers of many fighters in his division and beyond. He has tried to start a fight with Nate Diaz, Tony Ferguson, and more. Perhaps one of these men could be the next opponent for him when he is cleared to return.

McGregor is now winless in his last two outings, even though the last was called by the doctor and he still insists he was winning the fight. The Irish superstar is still the biggest draw in the organization and his return will be a sell-out no matter who he faces. He recently proved that by announcing his last PPV numbers.

Do you think McGregor is tougher than Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman?
