Shields — boxing’s unified middleweight champion — has been campaigning to fight Nunes with talks of a fight in boxing as well as mixed martial arts (MMA). UFC president Dana White also hinted earlier this week that a crossover fight was possible.
So when Shields was in attendance at UFC 245 on Saturday night, many felt she would confront Nunes. However, Nunes — who successfully defended her title against Germaine de Randamie via unanimous decision — didn’t mention her.
And when asked about a potential fight with Shields in the post-fight press conference, she called on her to fight in her world:
“She saw tonight. I don’t think she’s going to want to do anything with this,” Nunes said. “If she wants to see me, come to my world. I’m an MMA fighter. If she wants to see me, I’m going to wrestle the sh*t out of you, finish you with jiujitsu submissions. I want to see how she’s going to feel.”
As for the prospect of fighting Shields in both sports, it doesn’t make sense for Nunes:
“I’m an MMA fighter. Why she want to take me from my sport?” she added. “If she wants to fight me, come into my world. It doesn’t make any sense.
“I respect her as a boxer but I’m an MMA fighter. I don’t like to fight boxing. I like MMA. I like what I did today. If she can handle five rounds, come see me.”

It looks like we may be getting a first major female crossover fight with Amanda Nunes and Claressa Shields.
Shields — boxing’s unified middleweight champion — has gone on record multiple times this year claiming that she wanted to enter the world of mixed martial arts. She is also open to a fight with Nunes in a boxing ring.
In a recent interview with BT Sport, UFC president Dana White hinted that things could be in motion, especially as Shields will be in attendance for UFC 245 on Saturday:
“Claressa Shields is coming,” White said. “She’ll be here Saturday to watch the fight. I will be honest with you — Claressa Shields’ people and I have talked and I don’t know, we’ll see. I know they’re both interested in it too.
“So we’ll see how this whole thing plays out. We have a lot of respect for her too. She’s going to come to the fight. Should be fun.”
If it does happen, there is no word on whether it’ll be in the Octagon or in a boxing match. But for now, Nunes will have to get past Germaine de Randamie before thinking of any crossover fight.

For the past several months, there has been some chatter of the women’s boxing champion, Shields, and UFC “Champ Champ,” Nunes, possibly facing off down the road. Now, according to Shields’ manager, Dmitriy Salita. in a recent interview with TMZ Sports, the fight could potentially happen in 2020. (H/T MMA Junkie)
“I think sometime in the next six to 12 months,” Salita said. “I think both ladies need to embrace it and talk about it, and there needs to be a real plan to make it happen, and to make it the biggest possible event it could be.
“Claressa wants to be a two-sport star. We’ve just been really building her strategically – her fanbase, her brand – and Claressa is really carrying the women’s sport of boxing on her shoulders.”
Salita was in attendance for the infamous Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight in 2017, and followed the build-up as well. He believes a similar model would do wonders for women’s combat sports in return.
“It’s definitely something we’re very interested in,” Salita said. “I was actually at the Mayweather-McGregor fight and followed the build-up, and it was really a phenomenal event. And wouldn’t it be tremendous for women’s sport, for women’s boxing, for women’s MMA, to have two superstars from each one of these categories, from each one of these combat sports, compete in this super event?”
If the fight were to happen, however, Salita says Shields would have to make a payday upwards of $1 million.
“Claressa has been making good money from her first fight with me, and progressively as she’s climbing up the ranks,” Salita said. “I think a fight like this, at least for this side, for Claressa, would have to be a seven-figure payday and I think that there’ll be a lot of power and a great statement to say that these women are making so much money.”
What do you think about a potential superfight between Shields and Nunes?

Bellator president Scott Coker is open to welcoming world champion female boxer Claressa Shields into the promotion.
Shields recently came out this week and claimed she would enter the world of mixed martial arts as the boxing world didn’t deserve her. In addition, she has teased a career in the sport in the past.
Bellator is open to all sorts of talent and so, following Bellator 232 on Saturday, Coker was asked about the prospect of having the Olympian compete. While there are certain hurdles such as the weight class, he didn’t rule out the possibility:
“We don’t have a fight for her at 160 (pounds), because the top of our weight classes is 145,” Coker explained (via MMA Junkie). “But if she wants to come down, maybe we can have her compete. Or if some of the girls want to go up and fight, then maybe we could fight her.”
Even if there was no dedicated 160-pound weight class introduced in Bellator, Coker revealed there’s always the option of having Shields just compete in superfights.
“To me, it’s not our core business, fighting at 160 pounds,” he said. “But, just like with Keri (Melendez) and just like with Ava (Knight), if it makes sense and we (can) put her in some superfights, let’s do it. I’m not afraid to do that.”
It certainly wouldn’t be the first time a boxer has competed in mixed martial arts.
