Bellator president Scott Coker is open to welcoming world champion female boxer Claressa Shields into the promotion.

Shields recently came out this week and claimed she would enter the world of mixed martial arts as the boxing world didn’t deserve her. In addition, she has teased a career in the sport in the past.

Bellator is open to all sorts of talent and so, following Bellator 232 on Saturday, Coker was asked about the prospect of having the Olympian compete. While there are certain hurdles such as the weight class, he didn’t rule out the possibility:

“We don’t have a fight for her at 160 (pounds), because the top of our weight classes is 145,” Coker explained (via MMA Junkie). “But if she wants to come down, maybe we can have her compete. Or if some of the girls want to go up and fight, then maybe we could fight her.”

Even if there was no dedicated 160-pound weight class introduced in Bellator, Coker revealed there’s always the option of having Shields just compete in superfights.

“To me, it’s not our core business, fighting at 160 pounds,” he said. “But, just like with Keri (Melendez) and just like with Ava (Knight), if it makes sense and we (can) put her in some superfights, let’s do it. I’m not afraid to do that.”

It certainly wouldn’t be the first time a boxer has competed in mixed martial arts.

Claressa Shields is serious about a mixed martial arts (MMA) career. The 24-year-old boxing phenom tells TMZ Sports that she has actually met with an MMA coach, and her manager has reached out to UFC president Dana White.

Shields wants to get her feet wet in MMA before eventually landing a superfight with current UFC women’s double champion Amanda Nunes.

“I’m really a hard worker, and I’m dedicated to the craft. I eat right, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. When you have an athlete like that, and I’m young, I can really pretty much do anything right now,” Shield said.

“It has been thoughts to actually start training. I’ve actually sat and talked with an MMA coach. Shit can get serious real quick.”

Shields has accomplished quite a lot in her boxing career. Currently, she’s scheduled to take on Ivana Habazin on October 5 for the WBO junior middleweight title. If she wins that fight, she’ll become the fastest fighter to win titles in three different weight classes, overtaking the record currently held by Vasyl Lomachenko – who did so in 12 fights.

Once Shields accomplishes her goals in boxing, UFC president Dana White has said he’s open to booking a fight between Shields and Nunes. But first, she needs to develop her MMA skills before landing a massive bout against “The Lioness.”

“I’d like to get some fights and build my way up to that.”

What do you make of Shields considering an MMA run and wanting a fight with Nunes?

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and undefeated boxing champion Claressa Shields has been in mixed martial arts (MMA) headlines as of late.

Shields said she believes she’d put current UFC double champ, Amanda Nunes, to sleep inside the boxing ring. UFC President Dana White claims he’s open to putting such a fight together to see whether or not that’s true. However, Shields might just be willing to prove it inside the Octagon as well.

She took to Twitter recently to tease that she’s considering making a transition into MMA.

“This quote is really making me consider trying the @ufc ! I had this weird feeling about turning pro a few years ago and I stumbled up on this quote & decided to do it! And then yesterday this same quote reappeared! With all this talk about me and Nunes I had that same feeling.”

Shields currently reigns as the WBO, WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight champion of the world. She is undefeated with a record of 9-0, and last fought back in April when she bested Christina Hammer via unanimous decision. As for Nunes, she reigns as the UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion.

“The Lioness” is one of the most vicious knockout artists women’s MMA has ever seen. She hasn’t lost since 2014 and has finished her last three fights via knockout or TKO.

Dana White is down to arrange a boxing superfight between UFC double champ Amanda Nunes and unified women’s middleweight champion Claressa Shields.

Shields is undefeated in her boxing career with a perfect record of 9-0. Now that Nunes has begun making a name for herself in women’s combat sports, capturing both the UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight titles with a nasty knockout streak, Shields was asked about a potential matchup.

The boxing champ feels she’d no doubt put Nunes to sleep if they met inside the squared circle. Speaking to MMA Tonight on SiriusXM Radio recently, Shields doubled down on her willingness to fight Nunes, saying she’s “more than willing” (via MMA Fighting):

“I give her full props,” Shields said. “In MMA right now, she would beat me at this point. We’re talking about if we fight tomorrow, at this point she would beat me. And at this point if me and her were to fight tomorrow, I would knock her out in a boxing match.

That’s just pretty clear but if Dana White wants to have her come over to boxing and try her luck with me, I’m more than willing to meet her at 154 [pounds] and we can fight. I think Dana White has a lot of belief in Amanda Nunes and during that interview he didn’t say that I wouldn’t knock her out or he didn’t say that she would beat me, he said that it wouldn’t be a bad fight and it would be interesting.

I’m happy he believes in her [but] I know what I can do in a boxing ring. No disrespect to her but it’s a different game, MMA and boxing.”

Shields last competed in April when she outclassed Christina Hammer to win the WBO women’s middleweight title. As for Nunes, she comes off a successful 135-pound title defense, knocking out Holly Holm in the first round with “The Preacher’s Daughter’s” own signature head-kick.

What do you think about Shields and Nunes possibly boxing each other?
