During the UFC Fight Night 81: Dillashaw vs. Cruz event at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. on Sunday evening, UFC announced the coaches for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The 23rd season of the regular Ultimate Fighter series, not counting the various international TUF seasons, will be coached for the second time in history by women fighters, as UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and the number one contender in the division, Claudia Gadelha, will be the opposing coaches for the upcoming season, which will air on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).

Following the live announcement on FOX Sports 1 last night, UFC issued the following press release with all of the important information regarding plans for TUF 23.

UFC® CHAMPION JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK AND TOP-CONTENDER CLAUDIA GADELHA COACH LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT AND STRAWWEIGHT HOPEFULS ON THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER®

New season debuts Wednesday, April 20 on FS1

The Ultimate Fighter® will put mixed martial arts’ global dominance on display again as UFC® strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will coach opposite No. 1 contender Claudia Gadelha. The coaches will lead a group of eight light heavyweights and eight strawweights who will compete for a UFC contract and the title of The Ultimate Fighter.

The Ultimate Fighter®: Team Joanna vs. Team Claudia will kick-off on FS1 on Wednesday, April 20 with a two-hour season premiere airing at 10 p.m. ET as 32 competitors fight for one of 16 slots – eight in each weight class – available to be coached by two of the sport’s best. The season will continue with 11 one-hour shows Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET. The series is the highest rated and most watched original program since the network’s inception in August 2013.

Poland’s first UFC champion, Jedrzejczyk (11-0, fighting out of Olsztyn, Poland) stormed onto the scene in 2014 with her first Octagon® appearance. Since then, she’s gone on to win five straight, won the strawweight title, cemented her place on the top pound-for-pound list and is widely considered as one of the best strikers in the sport. She’ll now lend her expertise to the next generation of athletes who hope to follow in her footsteps and one day wear UFC gold themselves.

Gadelha (13-1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) trains at the renowned Nova Uniao gym, home to former champions Jose Aldo & Renan Barao. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist hopes to get another crack at current strawweight champion, Jedrzejczyk, who provided Gadelha with the only blemish on her record – a three-round split decision loss in late 2014. Their contrasting styles should provide for an entertaining season between the two teams. The Brazilian’s comfort zone is on the canvas and will provide a stark contrast to the Pole’s highly skilled striking attack brings a completely different skillset to the show.

The series culminates on live on FS1 Friday, July 8 in Las Vegas as part of International Fight Week and will be headlined by Jedrzejczyk and Gadelha in a championship bout for the strawweight world title.

Claudia Gadelha’s Sucker-Punch ‘Totally Different’ Than Paul Daley’s, According to Mind-Reading UFC President

(“You can’t put the slap back in the jar.” — Traditional Italian proverb that I just made up. / Photo via Getty)

By Trent Reinsmith

Dana White can see into your soul. At least, that’s sort of what the UFC president implied after Claudia Gadelha sucker-punched Joanna Jedrzejczyk following their strawweight fight at Saturday’s UFC on Fox 13 event.

The incident played out in a way that was very similar to the late punch that Paul Daley threw at Josh Koscheck after their UFC 113 fight had come to its conclusion. White wasted little time firing Daley from the UFC after his late strike, telling those at the post-fight press conference: “He’s done. I don’t give a shit if he’s the best 170-pounder in the world. He’ll never come back here again…I’m probably the most lenient guy in sports. And this is probably one of the most lenient organizations. We’re all human, we all make mistakes, things happen. There’s no excuse for that. These guys are professional athletes. You don’t ever hit a guy blatantly after the bell like that whether you’re frustrated or not. It was probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen…I don’t care if he fights in every show all over the world and becomes the best and everybody thinks he’s the pound-for-pound best in the world. He will never fight in the UFC ever again.”

I guess you could argue that due to the nature of the sport (basically punching another individual in the head), Daley should have gotten off with a strong warning, but White went with the nuclear option and permabanned Daley on the spot.

So, when Gadelha did pretty much the exact same thing after her fight with Jedrzejczyk had come to a close, the expectation would have been for White to appear at the UFC on Fox 13 post-fight press conference red-faced with anger. He didn’t — White more or less just shrugged it off.

The UFC president said of Gadelha’s actions, “People were going crazy on that one. She hit her after the bell, she did this, she did that.’ And then of course everybody goes back to Daley. ‘You kicked Daley out for that.’ The difference is this: when Daley did it to Koscheck, I was in there, and I went up to Daley because he was getting pulled around, and he didn’t care. He didn’t give a s–t. He looked right at me and said he didn’t care. As soon as (Gadelha) did it to (Jedrzejczyk), she reached her hand out and she apologized to her. She said ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’ She apologized.” White then added, “Those two had a war. They’re in the heat of a battle. She landed a kick and then the bell rang, and then she hit her with a punch. And then she completely apologized for doing it. Totally different scenario.”

Yeah, no. It’s the same thing. She punched her opponent after the horn had sounded to end the fight. The only difference is that prior to this fight Gadelha was being touted as a potential title contender in a very thin weight class. In other words, the UFC needs to keep her around for the sake of the strawweight division. Daley was more or less expendable at the time he committed his foul.

White’s “she completely apologized” excuse for not punishing Gadelha for the illegal strike is almost as laughable as UFC commentator Joe Rogan’s claim of, “I don’t think she was trying to hit her there, I think she was trying to like high five her or something.”

Remorse or lack of remorse should have nothing to do with how these things are dealt with because there’s no way to tell if the remorse is legitimate or feigned. When someone is caught red-handed doing something they shouldn’t, of course they’re going to go through some sort of calculation as to how they can get out of trouble or at least minimize the punishment. (For the record, Daley apologized the next day after cheap-shotting Koscheck.)

How White can discern the level of real remorse that Gadelha had after the late punch is beyond me. Yet there he was proclaiming that he knew that Gadelha was sorry for her actions because, you know, she acted like she was sorry. If that’s all it takes to get out of trouble with White, one can only imagine the havoc that his children get away with.

The bottom line is Gadelha broke the same rule that Daley did in pretty much the same way Daley did, and she walked away from it without even getting a stern look from the UFC boss.

In other words, hypocritical business as usual for the UFC’s head honcho.

Watch UFC Strawweight Claudia Gadelha Beat the Crap Out of Dudes on ‘Panico Na TV’

(Abs. Also pictured: Claudia Gadelha)

By Ryan Harkness

I think we all agree that The Ultimate Fighter has become a tired, worn out concept — to the point where even the fighters on the show don’t seem to give much of a crap any more. But women are doing their best to eliminate that not so fresh feeling from the show. TUF 18 featured bantamweight women alongside men, and TUF 20 (debuting in September) will be 100% 115-pound female goodness.

One fighter originally slated to appear on TUF 20 was Claudia Gadelha. Considered by many to be the ringer of the season, the undefeated BJJ black belt ended up being removed due to her inability to no speako de englis. But because of this switch-up, it now looks like she’ll get the honor of kicking off the women’s strawweight division when she fights victim opponent Tina Lahdemaki at UFC Fight Night 45 on July 16th.

It turns out that Claudia also has a bit of an interesting history: She is best known for a stint on Brazilian television where she fought dudes in the cage for a show called Panico Na TV. None of these guys were actually professional fighters and you can tell the goal isn’t to murderize each other. But speaking as an ill prepared TV host who once ‘fought’ Patrick Cote, this stuff can get pretty serious (at least for the poor bastards getting whupped).

Let’s take a look at some of these videos!

The silliest and therefore best of the bunch. Three Panico Na TV hosts visit Claudia where she trains, and she beats all three like bongos. If you’ve only got time to watch one person get their ass whupped today, may I recommend host #3 (7:20 into the vid), who decides about halfway through that he no longer wants to do this skit.

Claudia Gadelha vs. Tina Lahdemaki Booked for UFC’s First-Ever Women’s Strawweight Match at UFC Fight Night 45 in July

(Gadelha and her teammate Renan Barao, just chillin’ in the bathroom. / Props: PortalMMA.com.br)

Two months before the strawweight season of The Ultimate Fighter debuts on FOX Sports 1 on September 10th, UFC fans will get their first glimpse of the promotion’s new 115-pound female division when Claudia Gadelha (11-0) faces Tina Lahdemaki (5-0) at UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Miller, July 16th in Atlantic City. The booking was first reported by FOX Sports.

Gadelha should be a familiar name for followers of Invicta FC, as the Brazilian Nova Uniao product TKO’d Ayaka Hamasaki at Invicta FC 6 last July, and was supposed to challenge Carla Esparza for Invicta’s strawweight title in December, until a bout of gastroenteritis bumped her out the night before the event. Gadelha was offered a spot in the TUF 20 cast, but turned it down due to concerns over making weight repeatedly in a short period of time. She is apparently the youngest BJJ black belt in Nova Uniao history.

Lahdemaki is from Finland, and has primarily competed at 125 pounds in the past, most recently choking out Karla Benitez at Cage 24 last November in her home country. We don’t know much else about her, but sure, she’s UFC-caliber, why not.

Related: A bantamweight fight between Jessamyn “Sweet BBQ” Duke and Leslie Smith has also been added to the card.
