Cody Garbrandt unsure on rivalry with T.J. Dillashaw UFC 296 there's always going to be an asterisk

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt has claimed he’s unsure if he’ll ever share a similar sentiment to former teammate, Urijah Faber and end his long-standing rift with former two-time foe and former titleholder, T.J. Dillashaw, claiming there will always been an “asterisk” beside the veteran’s name.

Garbrandt, a former undisputed bantamweight champion, makes his return to the Octagon tonight at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, attempting to turn in a two-fight winning run for the first time since his 2016 title winning run – as he takes on Brian Kelleher in a bantamweight clash.

As for Dillashaw, the Angels Camp native briefly made his return to the Octagon in October of last year, attempting to become the first three-time bantamweight champion in promtoional history, before a lingering shoulder injury resulted in a one-sided second round TKO loss to Aljamain Sterling.

Cody Garbrandt addresses T.J. Dillashaw rivalry

Sharing his thoughts on a potential squashing of a long-standing and heated rivalry with former Team Alpha MMA training partner, Dillashaw, Garbrandt appeared less interested in doing so than former teammate, Faber.

“I mean, it is what it is, T.J. (Dillashaw) is no longer in the UFC, you see with his career and towards the end of it, and that’s the reason why,” Cody Garbrandt told ESPN ahead of UFC 296. “The substances that he was taking, his body wasn’t able to uphold and good for him, hats off to him for what he was able to do. But, you know, there’s always going to be an asterisk and there should be an asterisk throughout his name and whatever he’s done in his career.”

“I know wholeheartedly that I can go through my whole UFC career and not ever had to take any performance-enhancing drug and just believe in my abilities,” Cody Garbrandt continued. (H/T MMA News)

UFC CEO Dana White reveals he has hired the UFC matchmaker competition winner after the man, Jon Reeves, left such a good impression.

The UFC put on a competition in which the winner would come to Las Vegas and play matchmaker for a day, among other gifts. The winner, Reeves, was flown out from his home in Detroit, Michigan and would be at the facilities during the day and got to watch Dana White Contender Series during the evening.

“You want to know how f*****g good Joe is? I just hired Joe,” White said. “Joe works for us now. He’s gonna be one of the matchmakers.

“This f*****g kid is awesome. Yeah, I literally just back there. I did all the contracts, and I came back and I said, ‘I got one more. You want to work for the UFC?’ He freaked out! He is a f*****g UFC lunatic. He went toe to toe with the boys today. Bring up a guy on the roster that he doesn’t know. He knows everybody on the roster. And he actually did make a fight today. Dana White’s new hire gets to work

Whether you like White, or agree with some of the things that the UFC have done, this undoubtedly a nice story. Reeves seems like a massive fan who now gets to live his dream and work at the UFC.

White also revealed that Reeves had got straight to work and already booked a fight with former UFC bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt.

“He [Joe Reeves] met a bunch of fighters in the PI today,” White said. “And one of them was Cody Garbrandt. And they were talking and I guess Garbrandt said, ‘Listen, if you’re the matchmaker for a day, I want to fight in December.’ So he came in and started pitching us on fights for Cody Garbrandt in December, and he made a fight.”

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt sees a lot of holes in Sean O’Malley’s game.

O’Malley shocked the world on August 19, scoring a brilliant second-round knockout of Aljamain Sterling to capture his first piece of UFC gold. Following the win, O’Malley has been living his best life, but according to former titleholder Cody Garbrandt, those good times will be fleeting if he doesn’t fill some of the gaps in his skill set.

Speaking with Michael Bisping on the former middleweight champ’s YouTube channel, Garbrandt was largely complimentary of O’Malley’s highlight-reel-worthy knockout at UFC 292 but believes it’s just a matter of time before someone comes along and solves the puzzle.

“I’m happy for ‘Sugar’ Sean to finally get out there and – he had a lot of hype, and he went out there and he rose to the occasion and put away Aljamain,” Garbrandt said. “Looking at the fight, I just think that Aljamain was just too adamant on getting it to the ground. He wasn’t very comfortable with the movement. I have the best footwork and movement in the whole bantamweight division, and I knew that was gonna be a problem.

“[O’Malley’s] a counter striker, and [Sterling] lunged in, left himself open and you can’t do that with a counter striker,” Garbrandt continued. “He knows what Aljamain’s game plan was, get him to the ground and wrestle him. ‘Sugar’ Sean was like ‘I’m literally going to fight tooth and nail to not get taken down.’

“Aljamain made a constant mistake that made him lose the title, but like I said I’m happy for ‘Sugar’ Sean. I think it’s great he’s a champion in our division, I think he has a lot of holes and weaknesses that are gonna be exposed a lot. But right now, let him enjoy the championship and what he was able to do on Saturday night.” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Losing five of his last seven fights, Cody Garbrandt certainly has some work to do before he can potentially find himself back in title contention. After an ill-conceived move to flyweight, Garbrandt moved back to bantamweight, scoring a win over Trevin Jones at UFC 285. ‘No Love’ was expected to square off with Mario Bautista at UFC 292, the same night Sean O’Malley became the bantamweight world champion, but Garbrandt was forced to withdraw from the fight.

No expected return date for Cody Garbrandt has been revealed as of yet.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt still wants to settle his feud with one half of this UFC’s main event, Sean O’Malley.

Garbrandt and O’Malley have had the fair share of back-and-forth’s over the past few years, firing shots via interviews and social media as well as clashing at press conferences. At one point the fight did make sense, but since then the two career paths have gone in very different directions.

However, this hasn’t stopped the two from chirping at one another and recently Garbrandt would send out one last challenge – angling for a fight should O’Malley lose to Aljamain Sterling this weekend.

‘He has a weird infatuation with me you can get it once Aljo mops the canvas with you @SugaSeanMMA’ – Cody Garbrandt via his Twitter

Sean O’Malley rules out Cody Garbrandt fight

In what was rather bleak reply, O’Malley did rule out the possibility of the fight taking plavce after Garbrandt suffered another knockout loss.

“Dude, Cody is not getting that fight,” ‘Suga’ said. “When he said it, you could see it in his voice, it’s like (mumbles). But that fight’s not happening.”

“It doesn’t make sense for him to say that, you wonder if that’s CTE. He’s been knocked out five times in the last two years. … He was [the UFC champion]. That fight’s not happening, at least not next. He needs to—it just doesn’t make sense. It literally just doesn’t make sense. If you look at his record. No, that’s not next.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

O’Malley is set to challenge Sterling this weekend for the undisputed bantamweight title.

Garbrandt was also originally scheduled to fight this Saturday at UFC 292, but was forced to withdraw from his fight with Mario Bautista.

Cody Garbrandt books UFC return for August card at bantamweight Mario Bautista

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt has been tipped to make an Octagon return in then vein of former two-weight gold holder, Georges St-Pierre – preparing for an August clash with Mario Bautista at UFC 292.

Garbrandt, a former undisputed bantamweight champion under the banner of the promotion, returned to the Octagon in triumphant fashion at UFC 285 back in March – landing a unanimous decision win over short-notice opponent, Trevin Jones.

The victory came as Cody Garbrandt’s first since he turned in a Knockout of the Year contender against Raphael Assuncao back in the summer of 2020.

Suffering back-to-back defeats in the time since then, Garbrandt suffered a unanimous decision loss to Rob Font, and in a brief flyweight excursion, was stopped with strikes by Kai Kara-France.

Cody Garbrandt won the title as an undefeated fighter

Once boasting an undefeated 11-0 professional record and an undisputed bantamweight crown, Garbrandt has been touted to return to the Octagon in a style similar to past champion, St-Pierre – apparently still firmly within his fighting prime.

“He’s (Cody Garbrandt) still in his prime, and he’s actually in the midst of his prime,” Dewey Cooper told The Underground during a recent interview. “The story isn’t over and the ship has not sailed. Cody ‘No Love’ (Garbrandt) is a special guy. People really underestimate how athletic he is, he’s a quick-switch track runner who happens to be a fighter… Sometimes people who rise so fast, if their priorities aren’t in order, everything can come tumbling down.”

“Simplify the mind, and just win,” Cooper continued. “If it comes exciting, awesome. If it comes GSP style, then awesome. At the end of the day, get your God damn hand raised and we’ll be spectacular next time.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

During his run to the bantamweight title – which he clinched against Dominick Cruz, Garbrandt turned in stunning wins over the likes of Marcus Brimage, Thomas Almeida, and Takeya Mizugaki.
