Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt has
been forced out of his fight against top contender Raphael Assuncao at UFC Ohio.

ESPN who first reported the news said ‘No Love’
was hospitalized earlier this week due to kidney issues during
his training camp in New Jersey. He had recently moved to the city to begin
working under head coach Mark Henry and training with the likes of Eddie
Alvarez and Frankie Edgar.

The Ohio native later confirmed his withdrawal from the card and explained the painful symptoms he had been experiencing for quite some time, he told ESPN.

“I honestly don’t know what it is,” Garbrandt said.
“A month ago, I had cellulitis in my shin. I went to the hospital and got that
cleared with antibiotics. I got back into training, but then last Friday, the
lymph nodes in my groin were inflamed and I didn’t feel well. I thought it was
just due to rough training.

“On Saturday, I had flu-like symptoms. The lymph
nodes were so inflamed I couldn’t walk. I took an Uber to the hospital and did
a bunch of tests on my blood, kidneys, CAT scan. The doctor sent me home, and
20 minutes later I felt even worse and started pissing blood.”

Garbrandt hasn’t fought since losing against Pedro Muhnoz at UFC 235 in March 2019. The 28-year-old hasn’t won a fight since capturing the 135lb title by beating Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 in 2016. He lost back-to-back fights against TJ Dillashaw before his most recent defeat to Muhnoz.

It is so far unknown if the Brazilian contender Assuncao will remain of the card. With just over two weeks until UFC Ohio the promotion now faces the tough task of finding a replacement opponent able to make weight on late notice. All this whilst they continue to debate if the event is even safe to hold amid the ongoing Corona Virus pandemic.

Petr Yan has spoken out on his backstage confrontation with Cody Garbrandt.

To open up the main card of UFC 245 this past Saturday night (Dec. 14), Yan clashed with Team Alpha Male head honcho Urijah Faber. Garbrandt was in attendance to support his teammate and mentor Faber. It was a rough night for “The California Kid” as Yan knocked him out with a head kick in the third round.

Yan Explains Confrontation With Garbrandt

Footage surfaced of Yan and Garbrandt exchanging words backstage at UFC 245. The two bantamweights had to be separated. Speaking to MMAFighting.com, Yan said that the issues stem from a social media interaction.

“Nothing really happened,” he said of the backstage incident. “Cody wrote, ‘Get this MFer,’ on Dana White’s Instagram page, I jokingly replied, ‘You are next, No Chin,’ and he tried to act tough and crossed the line by commenting that he will see me tomorrow and smack me like a little ho. You all saw what happened when he saw me face to face: he was hiding his hands behind his back, acting all emotional and didn’t back up his words proving that he is all talk. He is a puppy – he barks, but doesn’t bite.”

Garbrandt hasn’t been seen in action since March. He’s on a three-fight skid and has been stopped in all of those losses. As for Yan, he may see himself getting a title opportunity or a number one contender bout soon. He’s riding a nine-fight winning streak.

This past weekend (Sat. December 14, 2019), Petr Yan and Cody Garbrandt certainly laid down the groundwork for a potential fight down the road.

Following Yan’s win over Garbrandt’s longtime friend and mentor, Urijah Faber, who he knocked out in the third round, Garbrandt and Yan engaged in an intense back-and-forth backstage. Garbrandt, who s currently set to face Raphael Assuncao in Ohio next year, is now eying a fight with Yan with a potential win over his Brazilian counterpart.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Yan opened up on what exactly went down between himself and Garbrandt backstage. It seems an exchange of comments on Instagram beforehand led to the disagreement.

“Nothing really happened,” Yan said. “Cody wrote, ‘Get this MFer,’ on Dana White’s Instagram page, I jokingly replied, ‘You are next, No Chin,’ and he tried to act tough and crossed the line by commenting that he will see me tomorrow and smack me like a little ho.

“You all saw what happened when he saw me face to face: he was hiding his hands behind his back, acting all emotional and didn’t back up his words proving that he is all talk. He is a puppy – he barks, but doesn’t bite.”

As for whether or not Garbrandt presents him any challenges that he finds concerning, Yan admits the Team Alpha Male product has good speed and power, but points out his chin isn’t great either.

“Maybe he has speed and power, but he can’t take a punch,” Yan said. “It would just be a matter of time before I can catch him and after that you will see another fall of the man with no chin. Now I understand that he talks big just to stay relevant. He is trying to attach his name to mine because I just won the fight and I’m on the rise.

“He needs to win a fight first before calling me out. To be honest, at this stage of my career, I’m not interested in this fight at all. I believe I deserve to fight for the title and will talk to UFC about that first.

“After that we can plan and see what fights will make sense. In the future it’s still possible, I would love to show you Russian boxing style.”

What do you think about a potential fight between Garbrandt and Yan? Who are you picking?

Petr Yan arguably got the biggest win of his career when he defeated Urijah Faber at UFC 245 on Saturday night — and one perosn who wasn’t happy about it was Cody Garbrandt.

Yan knocked down a resilient Faber three times on his way to a third-round knockout victory on the main card.

Afterwards, footage was posted showing Garbrandt — teammate and friend of Faber — confronting Yan backstage. The two exchanged words before they had to be separated.

You can watch the video below:

Garbrandt tweeted afterwards that he would love to face Yan in Russia when a fan brought up the idea. That is, if he gets past Raphael Assuncao who he faces next at UFC Columbus:

“After I’m done with Raphael. I’ll come to Moscow ?? to fight Peter!!! I love the Russians ?????” Garbrandt tweeted.

Yan would tweet as well stating that Garbrandt got emotional again:

However, Yan did not mention the possibility of fighting Garbrandt anytime soon. That’s because he has his eyes on a title shot against current champion Henry Cejudo who he called out following his win over Faber.

Regardless, a fight with Garbrandt would certainly be fireworks.

Do you want to see Yan and Garbrandt face each other soon? Who takes it?

Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt will get his wish. ESPN is reporting that Garbrandt will return at UFC Columbus on March 28 in Ohio.

Garbrandt will be taking on fellow top-ranked 135-pounder Raphael Assuncao. The UFC has yet to officially announce the matchup. Garbrandt vs. Assuncao headlines a UFC Columbus card that will be headlined by a heavyweight bout between Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Currently, Garbrandt is on a three-fight losing streak, his most recent defeat coming via knockout in March to Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235. Now, Garbrandt hopes to get back on the winning track against Assuncao. The Brazilian has also fallen on hard times as of late. After having a four-fight win streak snapped, the 37-year-old has suffered back-to-back losses against Cory Sandhagen and Marlon Moraes.

A win over a former champion in Garbrandt would be a huge boost for Assuncao and his hopes of getting back into the title hunt.

What do you think about the matchup between Garbrandt and Assuncao?
