Tyron Woodley reveals his ambitious goals for his career in the new year as he plans to fight two top contenders back-to-back in a short span of time. The UFC welterweight champion is slated to make his next title defense against Kamaru Usman in the co-headliner of UFC 235. He plans to fight as soon as possible as he wants to give a shot to Covington.

Many people believed that Usman should be in the running for a title shot after his latest win and the UFC agreed. Woodley made it known in a recent interview that he plans to fight Covington next.

“I just recognized that at some point I’m gonna fight all these guys,” Woodley told TMZ Sports (H/T to MMAFighting). “Obviously the world would like to see me f*ck Colby up right quick. But I think he’s trying to call shots and he’s not a champ so he can’t really do that. So I’m gonna go out there and fight Kamaru Usman. We’ll see what happens after that. Most likely I‘ll end up fighting Colby next up.”

Plans

Woodley is targeting a fight against Covington in June once the UFC’s rumored return to Chicago takes place. This doesn’t include the various factors that could delay these plans. Usman could beat Woodley, they could draw or there could be a controversial finish.

“Yeah, I’ll fight Colby next after that,” Woodley said. “Probably in June. I think they’ve got a fight in Chicago in June. I’m a midwest guy. I train in Milwaukee which is an hour and a half from Chicago, St. Louis is not that far. I think I’ve got strong roots there as well so it would be a good fight to headline on that card.”

The UFC 235 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019 in at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the TV network’s streaming service, ESPN +.

Dana White fires shots at current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and former interim champ Colby Covington. It’s been well documented that the UFC President is not a fan of Woodley and made that clear since he became the champ.

Whether it’s due to his personality or style of fighting, White and Woodley has been butting heads for quite some time now. This fight has been delayed to the first quarter of 2019 after Woodley underwent surgery for a hand injury.

At one point, there was the belief that it could take place at UFC 233 in January. With the promotion needing a main event for this show, the UFC is running out of options. As a result, White made it known in an interview with TSN that he’s becoming even more frustrated with Woodley.

“Tell me when Woodley does want to fight. This is always an issue with Woodley,” White said (H/T to MMANews). “We’re going to move on. That division is stacked. We’ve got a lot of good talent and whether Woodley fights or doesn’t, we’ll end up making a fight with some of the best guys in that division.”

Regarding Covington, White isn’t giving Covington a pass as he wants to see what Colby is made of. To him, it’s whether he wants to be a world champion or just a contender.

“That’s up to him. I could care less what his reservations are,” White said about Covington. “You either want to be a world champion or you don’t. If you get the opportunity in this business, you need to take it immediately. He had the opportunity to fight Woodley, he should have took it, he didn’t. We’ll see if he steps up and takes another opportunity.”

American Top Team head honcho Dan Lambert took part in a recent interview with Fightful where he noted that talks were in place for a potential title fight at the UFC 223 event. However, he’s not sure that Woodley would be able to fight then. It should be noted that both Woodley and Covington train at ATT. However, Woodley splits time between ATT and Roufusport.

The UFC 223 pay-per-view event will be held on January 26, 2019 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. If you recall, this fight has been delayed to the first quarter of 2019 after Woodley decided to undergo surgery for a hand injury.

Now, the UFC is attempting to book this welterweight title fight between Woodley and Covington as soon as possible. Lambert is known for not pulling any punches as he made one thing clear. He’s not sure that Woodley will be able to fight in just two months due to his recent surgery.

“The timing on the September fight [at UFC 228] didn’t work for Colby cause he had just had some surgery. It would have been a crazy quick turnaround. They’ve reached out and asked if Colby would be available in January on the 26th show. But not sure if T-Wood’s gonna be available for that show,” Lambert stated via BJPenn.com.

Lambert understands that once getting surgery, it will take some time to heal for that. Thus, he would guess that the fight goes down in either January or February. He doesn’t count it out for a potential March showdown either.

“He’s still getting over some surgery himself on his hand. So I’m not quite sure on when that fight’s gonna be. But if I had to guess, it would be on the January or the February show. Could trickle into March depending on T-Wood’s hand.”
