Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone has been tasked with welcoming Conor McGregor back to the Octagon at UFC 246, and UFC president Dana White believes the disrespect shown towards Cerrone ahead of the matchup has been “unbelievable.”

The narrative going around the mixed martial arts (MMA) realm is that the UFC is attempting to give McGregor an easy matchup to return to winning form. However, Cerrone is anything but an easy fight for anyone. White said as much during a recent interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. (H/T MMA Mania)

”We’re getting through this one first, we’re getting through the Cowboy fight,” White said. “And the level of disrespect shown to Cowboy through this whole thing? Apparently people forgot that Cowboy’s lost two in a row before and come back and gone on unbelievable runs. Let’s not count Cowboy out.”

UFC 246 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 18. It’s going to be a very entertaining bout when two of the UFC’s most game strikers stand in the middle of the Octagon and go to work.

Do you agree with White that the level of disrespect shown to Cerrone has been unbelievable?

Conor McGregor is going back to basics.

The Irishman returns to action at UFC 246 on January 18 in Las Vegas when he faces Donald Cerrone in a welterweight matchup.

And according to Irish Boxing, he has added boxing coaches from Crumlin Boxing Club — his old gym in Dublin, Ireland. Phil Sutcliffe and Bra Brady will reportedly be part of McGregor’s fight camp which is led by SBG head coach John Kavanagh.

However, it is not known what specific roles they will play, though it will undoubtedly be related to the striking aspect. Cut man Andy O’Neill will also be a part of the camp.

“Phil Sutcliffe is a phenomenal boxing coach and my time under Phil in Crumlin Boxing Club, I learned so many fundamentals that I still carry with me today,” McGregor said of Sutcliffe in the past. “I learned so many shots off Phil and the coaching staff down there and the sparring with Phil Sutcliffe Jnr in my early days was phenomenal, it got me to that next level I feel.

“It’s a phenomenal gym with great, great people. I believe Phil has recently renovated his place and I must go down when I get back home. I stopped going down when I was focusing on the other disciplines and looking to improve. Phil at the time was not too happy with that. ‘Why are you doing this grappling stuff? Or ‘why are you doing this kick boxing? You should be here boxing’. It was all friendly stuff but eventually I moved on and ended up at Straight Blast Gym. But my time at Crumlin Boxing Club, I learned so much fundamentals that still stand to me today.”

It will be interesting to see changes, if any, to McGregor’s striking as a result of this move.

What do you make of McGregor adding his old coaches for UFC 246 fight camp?

While many are already ruling the UFC 246 headliner as a foregone conclusion, Donald Cerrone is not too bothered by it.

Cerrone welcomes Conor McGregor back to the Octagon when they meet in the UFC 246 main event on January 18 in Las Vegas. There is already talk of McGregor getting the next lightweight title shot if he defeats Cerrone.

Others also feel it’s a guaranteed win over the Irishman considering Cerrone is on a two-fight losing streak. Despite all of that, “Cowboy” feels he’s a better mixed martial artist than McGregor and will pose plenty of problems given his overall experience:

“Do I feel like a better mixed martial artist? Absolutely,” Cerrone told MMA Fighting. “I feel like I’ve been in the trenches. I’ve been in the big fights. I’ve walked this path many, many times.

“This is my 51st MMA fight coming out of that tunnel. Literally, I’ve done it more than anybody.”

Cerrone will notably battle McGregor in a welterweight contest with UFC president Dana White labeling it a lightweight fight where both competitors don’t have to cut weight.

The idea was McGregor’s and Cerrone was completely fine with it as it will bring out the best in the duo:

“I didn’t care. They called and said Conor wants to fight you at 170,” Cerrone explained. “I said hell yeah let’s do it. It wasn’t a beat other than that.

“We’re both going to have a healthy, fat camp. How about that? We don’t have to worry about battling with diet and all that sh*t. We just get to go be who we want, train hard and show up healthy and I’m excited. All in all to get the best Conor, the best ‘Cowboy,’ this is the only way to do it.”

What do you make of Cerrone’s comments?

The UFC is doing everything they can to promote the return of top star Conor McGregor to Octagon action.

During yesterday’s (Sat. January 4, 2020) NFL Wildcard Playoff game between the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills, the UFC aired a promo featured around McGregor alone. Meaning, his opponent, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, nor the upcoming UFC 246 pay-per=view (PPV) event, were mentioned at all. Instead, the ad simply promoted that McGregor was available on ESPN+.

With the lack of information aside, the ad was actually very well put together and was something to see. Check it out here.

McGregor will make his return to action after his October 2018 defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov later this month (Sat. January 18, 2020). He’ll take on Cerrone at 170 pounds in the UFC 246 main event. Recently, McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, predicted a late stoppage win for the Irishman.

“I think it’s going to be late,” Kavanagh said. “I think it’s going to be late. I could see it in the championship rounds. That’s the mindset that I personally have and I have to be ready for that.

“Now, he could go and spark him in seconds but I think there’s a little extra weight involved, so I think in the later rounds.”
