Replacement fight floated as Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler in jeopardy for UFC 303

Amid continued speculation regarding the status of this month’s UFC 303 headliner between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler, reports tonight have revealed the organization have floated several “fill-in” opponents for the headliner, as well as even “replacement” bouts which would main event the June 29. card in Las Vegas.

According to a report from Ariel Helwani tonight, the promotion are said to be hopeful of seeing a bout between McGregor and Chandler remain on the UFC 303 card later this month amid continued speculation regarding the status, however, have floated several alternatives if the pairing fails to come to fruition.

“No news at the moment,” Helwani replied to a user on X. “The hope is still that the fight [between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler] is still on. There is positivity, I’d say. But they [the UFC] have sent out feelers to see who might be able to fill in, either as a replacement or an entirely new fight at the top of the bill. Still developing, and still some time.”

Tonight’s developments follow a bizarre and rather tumultuous week so far for the main event fight, which was slated to feature at a pre-fight press conference to promote UFC 303 on Monday in Dublin, before the organization confirmed the postponement of the event just hours before doors were set to open at the 3Arena.

The UFC has also so far yet to provide an update on the status of a pre-fight press event or the situation regarding the main event bout, with McGregor apologizing to his fans on social media overnight, claiming “obstacles” prevented the conference from taking place in his native Dublin

“In consultation with the UFC, today’s press conference was cancelled due to a series of obstacles outside of our control,” Conor McGregor posted on his official X account. “I apologize to my Irish fans, and fans around the world, for the inconvenience and appreciate all your passion and support. I can’t wait to put on the greatest all-time show in the Octagon.”

At the time of publication, the plan still remains for UFC 303 to feature a headlining fight between the above-mentioned, McGregor and Chandler at the welterweight limit on June 29. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada during International Fight Week.

Jake Paul claims to know 'a lot' about the ongoing Conor McGregor drama: 'They'll figure it out'

Jake Paul claims to have some insider information on all the drama surrounding Conor McGregor and his recently canceled press conference in Dublin.

On June 29, the Irish megastar is scheduled to step back inside the Octagon for the first time in nearly three years for a long-awaited clash with former Bellator MMA champion Michael Chandler. However, those plans now appear to be up in the air after McGregor reportedly backed out of a press event in his home country that would have seen him and his opponent go face-to-face for the first time since their stint on The Ultimate Fighter last year.

McGregor and Chandler

McGregor has since released a statement and The MMA Hour host Ariel Helwani attempted to shed some additional light on the situation, but as of right now, UFC 303‘s headliner appears to be in real jeopardy.

Taking to social media, Jake Paul claimed to know “a lot” about the ongoing situation with Conor McGregor but was unwilling to spill the tea.

“Heard they were celebrating the rescheduling of Paul [vs] Tyson,” Paul wrote on X. “People keep asking me about Conor McGregor [at] UFC 303. Obviously, I know a lot about it, but I’m not going to talk about it publicly. For the first time probably ever in my life, I have no comment on something.

That’s their world, and you know, they get pissed at me every time I talk about that stuff. Good for them and they’ll figure it out.”

Jake Paul is no stranger to postponements

Jake Paul is certainly no stranger to seeing the postponement of a big-money fight. Recently, it was announced that his highly anticipated scrap with legendary pugilist ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson was put on the back burner after the former heavyweight world champion suffered an ulcer flare-up during a flight.

A new date is expected to be announced within the next few weeks.

Amid the ongoing fiasco surrounding the status of Conor McGregor’s slated return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 later this month, former champion, Daniel Cormier has urged fans to “brace” themselves for a certain level of disappointment amid speculation the bout may be in jeopardy.

Slated to snap an almost three-year hiatus from the Octagon at the end of this month, Conor McGregor has been tied to a welterweight fight against former lightweight title challenger, Chandler during International Fight Week atop UFC 303.

However, speculation has mounted this week regarding the status of the pairing, with the organization cancelling a UFC 303 pre-fight press conference at the 3Arena in Dublin, set to take place yesterday evening.

Furthermore, McGregor – who addressed the media event’s cancellation, did little to offer any substantial questions, claiming “obstacles” outside of the promotion’s control forced the event’s postponement

As such, speculation has now pointed to a potential injury setback for McGregor ahead of UFC 303, who has been sidelined since he fractured his left tibia and fibula back in 2021.

“Start to brace yourselves for a little bit of disappointment,” Daniel Cormier said on Good Guy / Bad Guy. “Dana White will argue and scream at the media, Dana White will give the media a hard time, Dana White has no problem letting the media down, you know what Dana White doesn’t like letting down? The fans.”

“To me, it feels like this is a big deal,” Cormier explained. “I have out to many in the organization to try and find out what happened, and when everyone is as tight-lipped as they are right now, to me that tells me it’s a little worrisome.”

Michael Chandler has been urged to chase a BMF championship fight against Max Holloway if a scheduled fight against rival, Conor McGregor falls away from UFC 303 later this month – amid continued speculation over the pairing.

This week, speculation has been rife regarding this month’s UFC 303 headliner between McGregor and Chandler at welterweight, with the promotion cancelling a pre-fight press conference at the 3Arena in Dublin, just hours before the event was set to take place in the Irish capital.

And keeping their cards close to their proverbial chest regarding the potential rescheduling of a so-far postponed pairing, the UFC have been the subject of much speculation – as has Dublin striker, McGregor, who addressed the presser’s scrapping on social media yesterday evening.

Cancelling his own media obligations with broadcast partners of the UFC according to reports, McGregor claimed that “obstacles” outside of the promotion’s control forced the cancellation of the press event in in the Dublin docklands, before confirming he is still preparing to make an Octagon comeback.

And amid further speculation that the ex-two-weight champion may be carrying an injury of sorts into his set fight with Chandler at UFC 303 during International Fight Week later this month, a host of potential fights have been floated as replacements for the pairing if the matchup sinks.

From the likes of a light heavyweight title fight rematch between incumbent champion, Alex Pereira and former gold holder, Jiri Prochazka – to a short-notice BMF title fight between Chandler – in order to keep him on the card, against champion, Holloway.

According to former title challenger, Chael Sonnen to boot, while the Oregon native expects McGregor to stand opposite Chandler on June 29. – if all else fails, Holloway should be drafted in to fight the ex-Bellator MMA star.

“But I will tell you this: there will be no postponement of this fight,” Chael Sonnen said on Good Guy / Bad Guy. “They either fight on the 29th. or we move on. Oh, and by the way, the show is still gonna happen. I believe Conor is gonna be opposite Michael Chandler, I’m very confident in telling you that. However, if he’s not, Michael Chandler versus Max Holloway for the BMF [title] is the fight to book.”

Furthermore, prior to confirmation of the presser’s cancellation yesterday, UFC CEO, Dana White confirmed during his media appearance with assembled reporters after UFC 302 over the weekend how a BMF championship fight was currently in the works.

Stephen A. Smith calls for fans to protest potential fight between Conor McGregor and Islam Makhachev

Stephen A. Smith believes Conor McGregor has “no business” being inside the Octagon with a grappler. Especially when that grappler’s name is Islam Makhachev.

On Saturday (June 1) the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ successfully retained his lightweight world title, dispatching division fan favorite Dustin Poirier in the fifth round via submission, extending his unbeaten streak to 14 straight and further establishing himself as the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world — even if Dana White doesn’t agree.

Islam Makhachev Conor McGregor

Being the protege of Octagon icon Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev has a natural enemy in Conor McGregor. In the weeks leading up to UFC 302, both men have taken jabs at one another on social media and in interviews, with McGregor being especially nasty toward his former foe’s successor.

Their continued back-and-forth has only further fueled rumors that the two could end up going toe-to-toe inside the Octagon one day.

While that fight seems rather unlikely with both men on very different career trajectories, money talks, and the UFC is in the business of making money. And nobody makes more money than ‘Mystic Mac.’

Stephen A. Smith is confident makhachev would finish McGregor ‘inside of two rounds’

Joining host Molly Qerim on ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith was adamantly opposed to the idea of McGregor squaring off with Makhachev, claiming that it would be “the worst possible fight” for the Irish megastar.

“Conor McGregor has no business being in the Octagon against a grappler, which is what Makhachev… This brother right here is something special and he’s not going to try and strike against McGregor,” Smith said. “Just like he tried on numerous occasions to get [Dustin] Poirier to the ground [at UFC 302] before successfully doing so with that ankle wrap and ultimately getting him.

“That’s exactly what he’s going to do with McGregor. His whole objective is going to be about getting him to the ground. I think it’s the worst possible fight we could possibly want to see in the UFC. There’s is no purpose whatsoever.

“We should literally protest if they try to put [Islam] Makhachev in the Octagon against Conor McGregor because I believe that fight would be over inside of two rounds. He’ll get Conor to submit, it’s that simple. That’s not the fight we want to see. We want to see someone that’s going to try and knock Conor out and Conor try to knock them out. We don’t want to see a grappler inside the Octagon against Conor McGregor because chances are, it’s going to end soon.”
