The fight between Cory Sandhagen and TJ Dillashaw might be delayed for a month.

That’s according to Sandhagen’s Elevation Fight Team Justin Wetzell who claimed Tuesday that Dillashaw sustained a cut in training and has pushed the fight back to June.

The bantamweight contest was originally set to headline the UFC’s upcoming Fight Night event taking place May 8.

“Desperate TJ must not have liked what he seen on tape and needs more time, he’s pushing the fight back to June because of a “cut” sustained in training.”

While it’s a blow to the card and fans who were expecting to see the fight in a little under two weeks, it’s not the worst news, if true, given that the delay is only for a month.

And of course, nothing is confirmed as of yet so we’ll just have to wait and see what develops in the coming days.

What can be confirmed is that this is one heck of a fight which has a somewhat heated edge to it following comments from the two former training partners.

The winner will likely challenge for the bantamweight title next — after Petr Yan gets his rematch with Aljamain Sterling, of course.

Cory Sandhagen refuses to believe TJ Dillashaw will return a lesser fighter after serving a two-year doping ban.

The former bantamweight champion tested positive for EPO in the aftermath of his knockout loss to Henry Cejudo, who defended his featherweight title when they fought in January 2019.

Dillashaw was slapped with a lengthy ban for his blatant cheating and hasn’t fought since.

He’ll return to the Octagon when he fights Sandhagen on May 8.

Sandhagen is refusing to listen to talk of Dillashaw being a lesser fighter ahead of his return and insists he’s been preparing for the best version of the former 135lb king.

“The guy’s been out for two-and-a-half years almost now, so who knows what he’s been doing in that time?” Sandhagen told MMA Junkie. “I know that he had a couple of shoulder surgeries, which put him out for a little bit, and I know that I’ve been working really hard in those two years. I don’t really know what he’s been doing, but yeah, I suppose that’s probably the narrative that T.J. is probably gonna come back as a not-as-great version of T.J., but that’s just a narrative that I’m not gonna buy into. I’m gonna buy into the narrative which is gonna keep me safer, which is T.J. is gonna come back a better T.J.”

“If he was on EPO or whatever type of drugs he was on for his entire career and he’s off of them, then that’s 100 percent gonna play a factor,” Sandhagen continued. “Am I banking on that? Absolutely not. But if that is the case, which I have no idea if that’s the case or not, then, yeah, he’s probably not gonna be coming back the same guy.”

Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw has been booked in a five-round main event for one of the more highly anticipated returns to the Octagon in recent memory.

We have not seen Dillashaw (16-4) step in the cage since January of 2019 where he suffered a first round knockout loss to then flyweight champion Henry Cejudo in his bid to become a two-division champion.

Following the loss it was revealed that Dillashaw had tested positive for EPO and he was thus suspended for 2 years and stripped of his bantamweight world title.

Now finally eligible to return, the former champ in Dillashaw has booked his comeback fight against one of the top bantamweight contenders in Cory Sandhagen according to ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto who announced the news on social media.

“TJ Dillashaw is back … Dillashaw (@TJDillashaw) vs. the surging Cory Sandhagen (@cors_life) has been agreed to for the date of May 8. Five-round main event, per sources.”

This is almost certainly a number one contender’s bout with the winner presumably set to face the winner of Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan 2. The return of the former champ in Dillashaw is guaranteed to bring some fireworks to an already stacked Bantamweight division.

It’s starting to look like top bantamweight contender, Cory Sandhagen, will be the man to welcome TJ Dillashaw back to the Octagon.

Dillashaw hasn’t fought since falling short in his flyweight title bid in January 2019.

The former 135lb king was knocked out by Henry Cejudo inside one minute over two years ago.

Since then, Dillashaw has served a two-year drug suspension stemming from a positive test for EPO following his fight against ‘Triple C

During a recent interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, UFC President Dana White revealed that he is working on a number one contender fight for Dillashaw, he said.

“We’re working on something for TJ right now that would line him up. The winner of that fight would fight for the title next.”

Sandhagen seemed the clear choice considering the fact he is in terrific form. The 28-year-old has scored back-to-back highlight-reel knockouts against former title challenger Marlon Moraes and former lightweight king Frankie Edgar.

During the UFC weigh-in show, Sandhagen confirmed that he was the man being lined up to fight Dillashaw, he said.

“Yes, if I am allowed to say it. The fight has been brought up to me and hopefully we will be fighting pretty soon. I hope this is the case. I definitely think I am the guy right now and I almost feel like T.J. should be really grateful to be fighting for a No. 1 contender spot after his suspension.

“I am glad that it’s me and I am really excited for that fight and looking forward to it,” Sandhagen added. (Transcribed by MMA Mania)
