Aljamain Sterling mocks Cory Sandhagen performance after UFC Nashville that fight was sh*t

Attending last night’s headliner at UFC Fight Night Nashville between former opponent, Cory Sandhagen, and New England Cartel staple, Rob Font, undisputed bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling has described the headlining bout as a “sh*t” – amid a wrestling-heavy display from Sandhagen, en route to a dominant judging win.

Sterling, the current undisputed bantamweight champion, is slated to take main event honors at UFC 292 next weekend in Boston, Massachusetts – taking on the surging Sean O’Malley in a fourth attempted title defense.

Earlier this year, Uniondale native, Aljamain Sterling managed to land a close, split decision win over former undisputed flyweight and bantamweight champion, Henry Cejudo in Newark, New Jersey – becoming the first gold holder in the division’s history to land three successful title defenses in the UFC.

Aljamain Sterling blasts Cory Sandhagen’s victory at UFC Nashville

And with a keen eye on last night’s headliner between former opponent, Sandhagen, and Font – Sterling described the pairing as “sh*t” – likely criticizing a wrestling and grappling-heavy display from the surging former foe.

“Respectfully, this fight was sh*t,” Aljamain Sterling posted on his official X account.

Sharing the Octagon with Colorado back in June 2020 in a bantamweight title-eliminator, Serra-Longo MMA staple, Sterling managed to land his first title charge off the back of a stunning opening round submission win over Sandhagen – submitting the latter in less than two minutes with a blistering rear-naked choke

Receiving significant criticizm for his performance against short-notice replacement, Font, Sandhagen, who was originally booked to fight the streaking, Umar Nurmagomedov, revealed he suffered a tricep injury in the early goings of last night’s main event in Tennessee – sporting a sling around his right arm and shoulder following his unanimous decision triumph.

Last night’s victory came as Sandhagen’s third on the trot – prior to a split decision win over Marlon Vera earlier this year, and a prior doctor’s stoppage win over Song Yadong last year in a headliner at the UFC Apex facility.

Ahead of his return to the Octagon this weekend atop a UFC Fight Night Nashville card, surging bantamweight technician, Cory Sandhagen has elected against taking career advice from incoming title challenger, Sean O’Malley – describing certain characteristics of the Montana native as “super lame”.

Sandhagen, the current number four ranked bantamweight contender, makes his Octagon return this weekend at UFC Nashville – taking on short-notice replacement, Rob Font, after an initial scheduled clash against the streaking, Umar Nurmagomedov fell to the wayside.

Sidelined since April, Eliot Marshall trainee, Sandhagen most recently turned in a one-sided split decision win over common-foe, Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night San Antonio, which followed a prior fourth round doctor’s stoppage win over Song Yadong in another headlined last year.

For O’Malley, the Dana White’s Contender Series alum has been sidelined himself since October of last year, earning next week’s UFC 292 title fight against champion, Aljamain Sterling with a close judging win of his own over former gold holder and common-opponent, Petr Yan.

Cory Sandhagen explains his differences with Sean O’Malley

Sharing his thoughts on recent comments made in a bid to advise fighters from O’Malley, Sandhagen admitted that he could not “connect” with some of the thought processes of the title chaser.

“There are things about Sean O’Malley that I think are just like, super lame,” Cory Sandhagen told Shakiel Mahjouri during a recent interview. “Talking about things like, ‘You fight the worst guy for the most amount of money.’ Everything being like, business decisions. It’s like, I can’t connect with that type of thinking at all. To me, those are ways of thinking that are just weak and they’re ways of thinking that are gonna trend into ruining the sport a little bit, in my opinion.”

“You should want to fight the best guy,” Cory Sandhagen explained. “If you’re here to be the actual world champion, that’s what we’re doing. I don’t see this as a business really… I make good money now, I’m good. The greediness and the business decisions things that happen in a lot of these ways of thinking are, to me, lame. I don’t think that passing on the message that you should fight the worst guy for the most amount of money – that is just such a weak way of thinking.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

UFC Nashville Cory Sandhagen vs. Rob Font Betting Preview

Revered as one of the most technical strikers in the bantamweight division today, surging weight-class challenger, Cory Sandhagen gets the opportunity to showcase his skills in another high-profile main event clash this weekend – closing as a betting favorite over short-notice replacement, Rob Font.

Sandhagen, who currently holds the number four rank in the official bantamweight pile, most recently turned in his second consecutive victory, landing a one-sided split decision win over the then-streaking, Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in April.

The victory followed a prior dominant win over Song Yadong, defeating the Chinese upstart with an eventual fourth round doctor’s stoppage TKO win in another headliner – this time at the UFC Apex facility.

And remaining on this weekend’s card in ‘The Volunteer State’, Sandhagen was initially scheduled to fight the surging, Umar Nurmagomedov in Nashville, until an injury forced the Russian talent to withdraw from proceedings.

Pulled from a planned UFC 292 fight with the aforenoted, Yadong in Boston next weekend, East Coast favorite, Font books his fourth headlining clash in his last five Octagon pairings in his impromptu pairing against Colorado native, Sandhagen this weekend.

Snapping a run of back-to-back losses to both former featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo, and common-opponent, Vera, New England Cartel staple, Font most recently snapped his losing skid with an impressive first round win over Adrian Yanez at UFC 287 back in April. The victory earned Font a Performance of the Night bonus to boot.

However, despite his recent turn of form, Font has some ways to go in convincing the bookies ahead of his return, with Sandhagen currently riding a -333 betting favorite line with Betway to secure victory this weekend in his pursuit of an undisputed bantamweight title fight.

Sharing the Octagon with both former champion, Petr Yan, and current undisputed kingpin, Aljamain Sterling in the last three years – Sandhagen suffered a one-sided loss to the latter in the pair’s title-eliminator, before dropping an interim title loss to Yan on ‘Fight Island’.

A technical striker, Sandhagen, a product of Eliot Marshall, has landed notable wins over the likes of Iuri Alcantara, John Lineker, Raphael Assuncao, Marlon Moraes, and former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar during his tenure with the organization.

Also of note on this weekend’s ‘Fight Night’ billed card in Nashville, former undisputed strawweight champion, Jessica Andrade co-headlines against the hugely-touted undefeated contender, Tatiana Suarez.

In the midst of a two-fight losing skid – most recently bookended by a stunning KO loss to Chinese sensation, Yan Xiaonan, Andrade is currently priced as a large +290 betting underdog with Betway to defeat TUF winner, Suarez – who is closing as an impressive -380 betting favorite.

9-0 as a professional, Suarez, who holds an eye-catching win over former two-time strawweight champion, Carla Esparza, made a stunning return to the Octagon for the first time in four years back in February – defeating Montana De La Rosa at the flyweight limit with a second round guillotine choke win. Over the course of her Octagon tenure, Suarez also secured a first round rear-naked choke triumph over current flyweight queen, Alexa Grasso.

Cory Sandhagen isn’t concerned with the fabled Dagestani grappling skills of his next Octagon opponent.

‘The Sandman’ will look to continue his march toward the top of the bantamweight top ten as he meets undefeated submission machine Umar Nurmagomedov on August 5. Coming off impressive back-to-back wins against Song Yadong and Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera, Cory Sandhagen will look to stop the hype train Nurmagomedov has been riding since making his promotional debut in 2021.

Of course, that will be much easier said than done as Nurmagomedov makes his fifth walk to the Octagon with a perfect 16-0 record, including seven wins by way of submission. As is the case with every man that shares his famous last name, Umar Nurmagomedov plans to put his world-class grappling skills on display en route to a debut in the division’s top five. However, Nurmagomedov’s name and ground game won’t intimidate ‘The Sandman’ who is more than confident in his own skills on the mat.

“Everyone still thinks I suck at wrestling, even though, when you think about it, I can’t really think of a time outside of the (Aljamain) Sterling fight where I was on my back for longer than maybe five or 10 seconds,” Sandhagen told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “The time where I think I was on my back for the longest was against (TJ) Dillashaw, and I ripped his knee in half. So everyone still thinks my grappling isn’t that good.

“The Dagestanis kind of have this aura of being these superhuman people still, and that’s like, not true,” Sandhagen continued. “They’re just doing different things that people haven’t picked up on yet. I have a really good and smart team of coaches to help me navigate that, and then I also have a decent amount of training partners from that type of world that can also help me get really good at it too” (h/t MMA News).

Cory Sandhagen is 4-2 in his last six outings, coming up short against former bantamweight world champions Petr Yan and T.J. Dillashaw. With a win over Umar Nurmagomedov, ‘The Sandman’ could stake his claim for a 135-pound title opportunity once reigning champion Aljamain Sterling settles some business with No. 2 ranked contender Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 in August.

Currently sitting in the No. 11 spot on the rankings, a win over Cory Sandhagen would likely thrust Nurmagomedov into the top five and potentially place him in pole position for his first UFC title shot.
