The UFC may not be requiring fighters to get their COVID-19 vaccines, but the United States is, at least for some.

Dana White has been vocal about his support for the rights of his fighters to not need a COVID-19 vaccination to compete. Some have suggested that this could be because he does not want to blur the lines between independent contractors and employees, but even if that is not the case, he has made it clear how he feels on the matter.

However, a report that was obtained by MMAJunkie has revealed that while the UFC is not requiring vaccines, regulations for the United States will force international athletes to be vaccinated to compete. Beginning November 8th, nobody will be allowed to enter the country without proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test, meaning that any fighter coming from overseas after that point will have to take measures accordingly.

“Foreign national air travelers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of their vaccination status to fly to the United States,” the memo reads. “Fully vaccinated travelers will also be required to show a pre-departure negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of travel prior to boarding their flight. This policy also applies to foreign nationals crossing the land borders with Canada and Mexico or arriving in the United States by passenger ferry.”

That being said, the UFC wanted to make it clear that this was not a rule they created themselves. Instead, they are just informing the fighters about what the United States government has decided but did suggest that a workaround for some, would be to travel into the country before that deadline approaches.

“To be clear, this is NOT a UFC policy,” the memo reads. “UFC is not requiring you to get vaccinated. We are simply communicating the new guidelines recently announced by the U.S. government.”

“You should consider your options, such as traveling to the United States before this new U.S. government policy takes effect, or if you choose, make arrangements to take the appropriate vaccination.”

This is obviously a complicated issue that has many sides, with no one solution being satisfying to every party. The one thing that is clear, though, is that this has the potential for massive repercussions for international UFC fighters moving forward.

The UFC is set to host UFC 268 in New York City later this year at Madison Square Garden, despite some concerns that the state’s vaccine mandate would complicate matters for their fighters.

While that ship has sailed, it appears that they may have a new problem on their hands when it comes to hosting international fights in the United States.

The promotion is set to hold an international major event with UFC 267 in just days in Abu Dhabi, for the UFC’s return to Fight Island after resuming pay-per-view events in the U.S. Events will then return to the U.S. following UFC 267, including the highly-anticipated UFC 268 NYC event including the welterweight title rematch between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington.

Beginning Nov. 8, the U.S. government will implement a policy allowing international travelers who are fully vaccinated with one of the seven COVID-19 shots, to enter the country. Those who are not fully vaccinated won’t be able to travel to the states.

The UFC and president Dana White have been adamant on not requiring a companywide vaccine mandate

“Foreign national air travelers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of their vaccination status to fly to the United States,” the memo from CBO Hunter Campbell reads as published by MMA Junkie. “Fully vaccinated travelers will also be required to show a pre-departure negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of travel prior to boarding their flight.”

“To be clear, this is NOT a UFC policy,” the UFC memo continues. “UFC is not requiring you to get vaccinated. We are simply communicating the new guidelines recently announced by the U.S. government. You should consider your options, such as traveling to the United States before this new U.S. government policy takes effect, or if you choose, make arrangements to take the appropriate vaccination.”

The new policies could cause some issues with November international headliners such as Yair Rodriguez and Ketlen Viera, although their vaccine statuses have not been made public. UFC president Dana White has yet to comment publicly on the new U.S. travel policies.

Khamzat Chimaev

It appears that COVID-19 has had a greater impact on Khamzat Chimaev than anyone may have realized.

Chimaev contracted the corona virus disease back in November, and has since been forced to pull out of a fight against Leon Edwards twice while dealing with complications. While it was initially believed that it was just irregularities in medical tests that were preventing him from steeping into the cage, his manager says that the reality is much, much more severe (H/T Fightful).

“The other day when he finished training, on Tuesday, he couldn’t even walk up to his room,” Majdi Shammas told Frontkick Online. “He didn’t even have the energy to walk up to his room. He fell asleep in the lobby.”

“He can’t train. His friends called me and said, ‘Hey, Khamzat can’t even speak. His fever is so high, his headache is so much, you know, his muscle pain and everything.’ Then an ambulance came and got him to the hospital,” Shammas continued. “Even when he was in the hospital he called me like, when he called me he thought he was going to die. He was really bad.”

Chimaev made an immediate impact upon his arrival to the UFC. He dominated John Phillips in his debut on Fight Island before finishing Rhys McKee in the first round ten days later. A 17-second knockout over Gerald Meerschaert in September firmly entrenched him as one of the top prospects in all of MMA, but his COVID diagnosis has kept him on the sidelines since then. Here’s hoping that Khamzat Chimaev is able to make a full recovery and live his life normally again sometime soon.

Should the UFC rebook Khamzat Chimaev vs Leon Edwards? Who else should he fight?

Fedor Emelianenko

One of the pioneers of MMA, Fedor Emelianenko has been hospitalized after testing positive with Covid-19. According to RT Sport, Fedor posted the following on Thursday:

“Thanks to all who are genuinely concerned for my health, I feel fine. I am going into recovery. I’m grateful to the doctors and medical staff for their care and hard work” (H/T MMA Junkie).

RT Sport also reported that Emelianenko is currently in a specialist Covid-19 hospital, situated in Moscow. The Heavyweight legend was supposedly set to headline Bellators first ever even in Russia had Covid not struck. According to Scott Coker the event would have served as Fedor’s retirement bout. In an interview with MMA Junkie, Coker stated the following:

“I really wanted Fedor to fight his retirement fight not in front of just the officials and have the staff and be on a closed environment in a bubble. I really want Fedor to finish his career in front of 30,000 people in Moscow, to be honest, Bellator MMA’s first fight in Russia.”

“Do a fight in Moscow. For him, the prodigal son has returned. Fedor is the greatest fighter of all-time, and he’s now coming home to retire and put his gloves up and hang it up to retire.”

In the same interview, Coker also said that he still hoped to hold the event, once Covid had been contained.

“I’m hoping that the vaccine will start fixing the situation and we can start bringing in crowds,” Coker said. “But to me, I feel we’ve waited so long for Fedor to fight, hoping that the pandemic would thin out, and now that it’s getting close and I can see light at the end of the tunnel for the pandemic to go away, I really want to wait and to do these fights in a proper stadium, especially the one we do in Moscow.

“I want to do something very big for him, because to me, it’s like he’s the king, and the king is returning from the battlefield.”

This likely the last thing Fedor Emelianenko is currently thinking about, and there is a strong possibility that we may never see the Last Emperor grace the sport of MMA again.

Aung La N Sang

One Championship’s two division champion Aung La N Sang has revealed that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a post to his Instagram the fighter shared the news, stating that he and his family will be quarantining for the next 14 days.

“Dear family and friends, I got tested for covid-19 on Monday and the result came back today and I am positive. So my family and I will be quarantining ourselves for the next 14 days. I had a slight fever, congestion, body ache and fatigue on the first two days. Besides that I am blessed that my whole family is doing well. We are really in this together and we will get over this.”

The double champion most recently defended his light heavyweight title against Heavyweight champion Brandon Vera in October of 2019.

Since then it has been rumored he would defend his middleweight title in a trilogy bout against Vitaly Bigdash.

One Championship held an event with no crowd in Singapore back in February and planned to continue this with all the events they had scheduled. The organization decided against continuing this after COVID-19 began spreading at a rapid rate around the globe and has since held off holding any events.

Recently the promotion announced their return on July 31st in Bangkok with events to be held in the months following.

The announced event on July 31st will be held without any crowd in attendance and will feature no MMA bouts on the line-up. This card is instead to be headlined by two championship Muay Thai matchups, a trilogy bout, Rodtang vs Petchdam III, and Petchmorakot vs Yodsanklai.

There has been no announcement made by the organization on when Aung La N Sang will make his return, however, due to his recent positive test it is not likely to be anytime soon.
