UFC lightweight striker, Dan Hooker has inked his first ever tattoo this week after hitting headlines over the course of this months post-UFC 284 – donning a sizeable back piece for his first time under the needle.
Hooker, the current #11 ranked lightweight contender, earned his way back to the division’s top-15 rankings with an impressive finish of Claudio Puelles back in November at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden, with a third round body kick TKO.
The victory propelled the City Kickboxing mainstay back to the winner’s enclosure, following a string of losses consecutively against Arnold Allen – albeit at the featherweight limit, and a submission loss to current lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev.
Hitting the headlines in the immediate aftermath of UFC 284, Dan Hooker branded lightweight kingpin, Makhachev a “cheating dog” – accusing him of utilizing an intravenous drip in order to help with the rehydration process ahead of his title fight with featherweight champion and Hooker’s training partner, Alexander Volkanovski.
Slated himself to fight Jalin Turner at UFC 285 on March 4. next, Auckland striker, Dan Hooker was forced from the card earlier this month after suffering a fractured hand. Turner is slated to remain on the T-Mobile Arena card in two week’s time, however, drawing former two-division KSW champion, Mateusz Gamrot on short-notice.

Dan Hooker has recently gone on record accusing one of his former opponents, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, of cheating prior to his bout opposing Hooker’s teammate, Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 284.
Hooker made no excuse when he was submitted in the first round against Makhachev back in October of 2021, but he did make the following post after Volkanovski failed to become a two-division champion:
The champion responded to Hooker’s allegations earlier today with a tweet of his own, demanding Hooker be held accountable for such accusations:
Islam Makhachev‘s manager Ali Abdelaziz also responded, before deleting it.
Luckily for us, Ariel Helwani saved it before he had a chance to:
This has turned into quite a sticky situation; while Australia commissions allow the use of IV’s prior to a fight, USADA, whom works for the UFC, does strictly prohibit athletes from using them.
Islam Makhachev and his team have denied using an IV to begin with, though Abdelaziz’s tweet has drawn speculation amongst the MMA fanbase.
Had Makhachev used an IV following their weigh ins prior to UFC 284, it certainly could’ve aided him in a number of ways. One, it could aid him in cutting more weight than others not using an IV, and two, it could have helped him push through the fight without being finished.
Many fans and media had Makhachev beating Volkanovski three rounds to one going into the fifth, and Makhachev was noticably fatiguing at that point. Volkanovski dropped him in that fifth and final round, and rather than trying to get back to his feet, Makhachev accepted bottom position for the rest of the fight – the greatest grappler and wrestler in the sport right now, who’d never been on his back in the UFC until that point, accepted bottom position. That tells you how absolutely drained he was.
So, there’s certainly benefit to using IV’s pre-fight.
Let’s just hope for Makhachev’s sake he really didn’t and this truly is just an accusation.
Do you think Islam Makhachev used an IV before his fight at UFC 284?

Following the UFC 284 main event between Islam Makhahev and Alexander Volkanovski, potential news emerged that could sully the fight – which was ultimately an excellent bout.
Following Makhachev’s first successful defense of his 155lb title, friend and teammate of Volkanovski, Dan Hooker, accused Makhachev of cheating. Hooker took to social media and in a series of tweets, claimed that Makhachev used intravenous (IV) therapy to rehydrate following weigh-ins last Friday.
‘Dumb c**t thinks he can fly to Australia hire a nurse to give him an I.V and we won’t find out. Cheating dog.‘
‘Islam is a cheat.’
The use of an IV is illegal under UFC’s rules according to their testing agency, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Makhachev looked visibly affected by the weight cut, appearing literally ill and becoming emotional after making the 155lb limit.
Islam Makhachev and team respond
A member of Makhachev’s management team, Rizan Magomedov recently spoke to MMAJunkie, blowing off the accusations.
“We all know this is completely BS,” Magomedov said. “The guy is a loser. He’s salty and just looking for attention, and that’s it.”
Hooker and Makhachev faced one another back in October of 2021, with the latter making quick and easy work of ‘The Hangman’, locking in a kimura in the first round.
If it’s true, what should Islam Makhachev’s punishment be?
