UFC legend Chael Sonnen could not disagree more with a recent opinion Daniel Cormier shared about the heavyweight title picture.

The main throne is currently occupied by Jon Jones, who collected the then-vacant belt with a submission of Ciryl Gane in his divisional debut last March. Next to him, however, sits an interim champ in the form of Tom Aspinall.

The Manchester, England, native captured that gold after Jones’ scheduled defense against Stipe Miocic last November was canceled due to an injury. With Aspinall capitalizing by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich, many initially expected Jones to meet the Brit in a unification showdown upon his return from the sidelines.

But both the Rochester native and the UFC have other plans. While Aspinall gears up to defend his interim strap against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 on July 27, Jones is expected to welcome Miocic back to the cage in November.

That situation has left many in the community — fighters, fans, and pundits — less than pleased, with plenty expressing a lack of interest in the Miocic fight and disdain at the champ’s dismissal of his interim counterpart.

According to Cormier, a former heavyweight titleholder himself, those voices will only get louder should Aspinall run through Blaydes in Manchester, so much so that the UFC could be forced into a change.

Sonnen To Cormier: ‘Did You Hurt Your Head? Fall Off A Ladder?’

During a video recently uploaded to his YouTube channel, Sonnen reacted to Cormier’s take with utter bemusement.

“The Bad Guy” insisted that no manner of victory for Aspinall could outdo his title-winning performance against Pavlovich last November. And seeing that such a display on that occasion did little to budge Jones and the UFC from their plans, Sonnen laughed off the suggestion a win over Blaydes could.

“Is he (Cormier) drunk? Did he hurt his head? Did he fall off a ladder or something like this? Is he working on a comedy routine? I ask because he thinks that Tom Aspinall, with a proper victory, could take Stipe’s fight against Jon Jones away,” Sonnen said. “He can’t be serious, right?! He said with a proper performance, gotta be an absolute drubbing…Aspinall’s gotta go out there in front of his people and whip Curtis Blaydes, and there could be such an uprising by you, the crowd, that UFC would have no choice but to give Tom the fight.

“There’s no way he believes that, right? Sometimes you say things and it’s on accident. In a normal situation you’d cut, edit that out, give me another shot. But, you’re live. And you look back and go, ‘That’s not at all what I meant.’ I’m assuming that’s what happened here,” Sonnen continued. “There’s nothing that can be done to Curtis Blaydes that would be worse than what happened to Sergei. And there is no amount of eyes on this match that is going to have the focus and the interest, thus making a victory potentially by Tom more incredible. To act as though that could interfere with a contractual agreement on a fight…what in the blue hell are you talking about?!”

Nevertheless, Aspinall will hope to give Cormier’s theory the chance to play out by delivering a devastatingly dominant performance in his rematch against Blaydes later this month on home soil.

The interim heavyweight title will be contested in the first of two championship fights at UFC 304, with Leon Edwards subsequently defending his welterweight belt against Belal Muhammad in the main event.

Fans urged to uprise to force UFC fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall

According to former two-division champion, Daniel Cormier, a fan “uprising” by the end of this month could force the UFC’s hand into a long-awaited fight between heavyweight stars, Jon Jones, and Tom Aspinall.

Later this month in Manchester, interim heavyweight champion, Aspinall returns to co-headline UFC 304, taking on perennial contender, Curtis Blaydes in a defense of his interim crown as the duo lock horns for a second time.

And long-linked with a title unification fight against the previously mentioned, Jones, Atherton native, Aspinall will lay in wait for his chance to unify the belts, with the former expected to headline UFC 309 in November against the returning, Stipe Miocic in a rescheduled showdown at Madison Square Garden.

Tom Aspinall offered potential route to Jon Jones fight

Despite the fact the duo are on separate collision courses with altering foes, the above-mentioned, Cormier claims if Aspinall manages to land a stunning victory over Blaydes at UFC 304, an uprising from fans could force the hand of the UFC to book him against Jones.

Jon Jones5

“Could you imagine if Tom Aspinall just washes out Curtis Blaydes,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “Then the firestorm that would start to gather for him to fight [Jon] Jones? For there to truly be an uprising, it would have to be Aspinall destroying Blaydes. Only because of this: You’ve see Curtis Blaydes lose before, so people would think, ‘Oh, he beat Tom Aspinall, but we’ve seen him get beat by Francis (Ngannou) and lose to other guys.’”

“…There may be such a fan uprising that the UFC may have to be forced to make Jones vs. Aspinall,” Cormier explained. “I don’t know what that would mean for my man Stipe (Miocic), but it sounds like if it does happen, he’s okay with it.”

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier has underscored the remarkable transformation within the UFC light heavyweight division, emphasizing the stark contrast between its current state and that of just half a decade ago.

For years, the UFC light heavyweight belt was held by some of the sport’s most iconic figures, such as Jon Jones, Chuck Liddell, and Cormier. However, none of them experienced the rapid ascent within the division like the reigning champion, Alex Pereira.

“Poatan” successfully defended his title twice in as many months, most recently delivering a stunning second-round head kick knockout against former rival Jiri Prochazka in the main event of UFC 303 last weekend.

In just 13 professional MMA bouts and nine UFC appearances, Pereira has crafted an extraordinary legacy. He became the ninth fighter in UFC history to hold championships in two divisions. Remarkably, he is the first to capture titles in both the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions within a mere two-year span.

With years of fighting experience and his own status as a two-division UFC champion, Cormier possesses an intimate understanding of the fighters and the current dynamics of the 205-pound division.

“DC” observes that the landscape has dramatically shifted in the past five years, especially due to Pereira’s dominance and exceptional striking prowess…

Cormier Highlights Dramatic Change in Current LHW Fighting Styles

During a recent episode of ESPN’s Good Guy / Bad Guy with Chael Sonnen, Cormier delved into the current state of the light heavyweight division, with “Poatan” reigning as champion and his challengers on the horizon.

They discussed Magomed Ankalaev’s recent challenge to Pereira, where the undefeated Dagestani intriguingly promised not to rely on wrestling in their potential title fight.

“DC” pointed out that five or six years ago, the top fighters in the division primarily had wrestling or grappling backgrounds. In contrast, the present-day contenders are increasingly reliant on striking skills.

Look at this weight  class right now, Chael, I see no wrestlers.” Cormier said. “I don’t see any wrestlers all the way to #10. #6 guy in the world is Nikita Krylov.”

The former Olympian further assessed the prospects of dethroning Pereira, considering the challengers’ fighting styles.

“If nobody wrestles this guy, Chael, how long can Alex Pereira reign at top of the division? Because it feels if you’re forced to stand with him and strike with him, you really have no chance.”

Michael Chandler urged to move on from Conor McGregor after failed fight he's done

Hall of Fame star and promotional color-commenator, Daniel Cormier has urged Michael Chandler to move on from a failed UFC 303 fight with Conor McGregor this month – claiming he expects the Dubliner to now retire definitively from mixed martial arts.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined for the last three years – after fracturing his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to common-foe, Dustin Poirier.

And now forced from a UFC 303 return during International Fight Week later this month, McGregor has been struck with an undisclosed injury – and whilst it has been described as not “severe”, the veteran is still expected to be out of action for at least two months.

Seeing himself scratched from the UFC 303 headliner as a result, Chandler will watch on as undisputed light heavyweight kingpin, Alex Pereira drafts into a main event fight on just two weeks notice – in a rematch against former champion, Jiri Prochazka.

With speculation rife regarding the immediate fighting future of McGregor – whom UFC CEO, Dana White elected against discussing in the aftermath of his exit from the pay-per-view card, Chandler has been urged to chase other fights by Cormier, in order to snap his almost two-year hiatus.

“He’s (Michael Chandler) got some things to weigh going forward because I don’t know that he should wait anymore,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “I think it’s time to move off of this, and I believe that the overwhelming sentiment is that [Conor McGregor] is done.”

“I thought Conor McGregor was going to come back because to me, Conor McGregor’s a fighter,” Cormier explained. “I know, skill-for-skill, the Conor McGregor of 2015 isn’t the same guy. But I thought that the star was still the same. I just don’t know that he wants to fight. Especially right now.”

There are few rivalries in mixed martial arts more iconic than the one between consensus MMA GOAT Jon Jones and former two-division world champion Daniel Cormier.

Competing twice inside the Octagon, ‘Bones’ scored two decisive victories over ‘DC,’ though the result of their second meeting at UFC 214 was later overturned from a KO win for Jones to a no-contest after the Rochester, NY native tested positive for a turinabol metabolite.

Cormier and Jon Jones

Cormier never really got over those losses and based on a recent interaction between the two combat sports icons, it seems like he never will.

In the video clip above, Jones and Cormier share some unexpected pleasantries over the phone. However, it seems like neither man is overly excited to hear the words of encouragement coming back to them. Just before the camera cuts, Cormier flashes a smile and flips the bird, making it quite clear how he feels about Jon Jones.

‘DC’ has his reasons for denying Jon Jones GOAT Status

Cormier’s biggest beef isn’t necessarily with the fact that ‘Bones’ beat him twice, but the steady stream of trouble that the former light heavyweight and current heavyweight titleholder finds himself in. For all his accolades inside the Octagon, Jones has a run-in with the law to match. In 2015, he was found guilty of a hit-and-run, fleeing the scene of an accident after running a red light and crashing into a vehicle. Jones fled on foot.

In 2021, he was arrested for domestic violence hours after being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. A belligerent Jones was seen in dashcam footage headbutting the hood of the patrol vehicle and challenging the responding officers to a fight.

Over the years, he’s been charged with multiple DWIs, battery, and most recently, was investigated for allegedly threatening to kill a drug-testing agent who was tasked with obtaining a urine sample from the superstar.

Then there’s the failed drug tests, but we won’t get into all of that right now.

Daniel Cormier warns fans to brace yourselves for disappointment amid Conor McGregor fiasco ahead of UFC 303

Amid the ongoing fiasco surrounding the status of Conor McGregor’s slated return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 later this month, former champion, Daniel Cormier has urged fans to “brace” themselves for a certain level of disappointment amid speculation the bout may be in jeopardy.

Slated to snap an almost three-year hiatus from the Octagon at the end of this month, Conor McGregor has been tied to a welterweight fight against former lightweight title challenger, Chandler during International Fight Week atop UFC 303.

However, speculation has mounted this week regarding the status of the pairing, with the organization cancelling a UFC 303 pre-fight press conference at the 3Arena in Dublin, set to take place yesterday evening.

Furthermore, McGregor – who addressed the media event’s cancellation, did little to offer any substantial questions, claiming “obstacles” outside of the promotion’s control forced the event’s postponement

As such, speculation has now pointed to a potential injury setback for McGregor ahead of UFC 303, who has been sidelined since he fractured his left tibia and fibula back in 2021.

Sharing his thoughts on the cloudy situation, former two-division champion, Cormier claimed fans and spectators should prepare for an inevitable disappointment regarding the UFC 303 headlining fight.

“Start to brace yourselves for a little bit of disappointment,” Daniel Cormier said on Good Guy / Bad Guy. “Dana White will argue and scream at the media, Dana White will give the media a hard time, Dana White has no problem letting the media down, you know what Dana White doesn’t like letting down? The fans.”

“To me, it feels like this is a big deal,” Cormier explained. “I have out to many in the organization to try and find out what happened, and when everyone is as tight-lipped as they are right now, to me that tells me it’s a little worrisome.”
