Alex Pereira tipped to enter GOAT debate with third title fight victory over Jon Jones UFC

Former two-division champion, Alex Pereira has been backed to land himself in the debate as the greatest fighter of all-time if he can snatch an unmatched third Octagon championship under the banner of the UFC, by Hall of Fame star, Daniel Cormier.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight champion and the current light heavyweight titleholder, most recently headlined UFC 300 last month, turning in a blistering opening round KO win over former champion, Jamahal Hill in the Illinois native’s return to action.

And linked with both a title fight move to the heavyweight limit, amid somewhat of a call out from incumbent gold holder, Jon Jones, Pereira insists he already has his next defense at 205lbs lined up.

Also featuring on UFC 300 back in April, former light heavyweight champion, Jiri Prochazka will likely stand across from Pereira in a title re-run – according to the Sao Paulo native himself, with the Czech Republic native fresh from a rallying knockout of his own against Aleksandar Rakic.

Alex Pereira touted as ‘GOAT’ with third title victory

However, amid links to a title charge at the heavyweight limit – Alex Pereira must undoubtedly be viewed as a contender to land status as the greatest fighter to ever compete in mixed martial arts, should he topple Jones and win a third crown in the promotion.

Police say Jon Jones claimed drug testing agent fabricated a story amid use of expletive language

“If Alex (Pereira) can be a guy that wins a third belt, that dude better be in the conversation as greatest of all time,” Daniel Cormier told MMA Junkie. “And hell, he’s only done it – he’s only got like 11 (sic) fights in his entire career.”

However, amid links to a super fight showdown with Jones, Pereira has been warned he would likely only last two and a half minutes with the former pound-for-pound number one if they ever share the Octagon, according to promotional veteran, Ben Askren.

Former two-weight champion and Hall of Fame star, Daniel Cormier has heaped praise on notorious rival, Jon Jones for suggesting a future clash with Alex Pereira, even if that means Tom Aspinall misses out on a clamored-for unification clash.

Jones, a current heavyweight champion, has been sidelined since he took main event honors at UFC 285 back in March, turning in a first round guillotine choke submission win over Ciryl Gane to win the vacant heavyweight crown.

Slated to return back in November at UFC 295, Jon Jones was forced from a showdown with Stipe Miocic, after he suffered a pectoral tendon tear just weeks out from their massive Madison Square Garden matchup.

And revealing over the course of the weekend how he has struck a verbal agreement with UFC brass to make a return later this year, Jones is expected to still take on Ohio veteran, Miocic in his first outing since March of last annum.

Furthermore, Jones has welcomed the chance to take on the above-mentioned, Pereira in a clash for the heavyweight title – instead of a pairing with Atherton native, Aspinall, who currently holds interim spoils – much to the support of the aforenoted, Cormier.

“Give a tip to the cap to the champion,” Daniel Cormier said on Good Guy/Bad Guy. “The champ goes, ‘Hey, I think Jiri Prochazka is next. Ankalaev is going to have to wait’ Smart. Alex, why would you fight Ankalaev? He’s going to try and wrestle you, fight the dude you’ve knocked out already.”

“These athletes are much smarter today than they were before, and I believe it makes for the sport to be even more interesting,” Cormier explained. “I love it. I love what Jon (Jones) is doing, I love what Alex is doing, but I think Jon is choosing, ‘I’m not fighting Tom Aspinall.”

Alex Pereira and Daniel Cormier got into a scrap backstage that had to be broken up by security.

In a clip courtesy of Canal Encarada and shared by Championship Rounds on X, the current UFC champion and former two-division titleholder got into a clinch battle that ultimately ended when ‘Poatan’ put Cormier on the ground.

“Caught this scene between Alex Poatan and Daniel Cormier backstage at #UFCRio The two started playing sparring until the Brazilian put the American down and even had security to separate them,” Carnado wrote on Instagram. “Competitive or not?”

Alex Pereira won’t compete at UFC 301 as he had originally hoped

Pereria will almost certainly be in attendance for this Saturday’s UFC 301 card at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, ‘Poatan’ won’t be competing at the event as he had originally hoped. Following his sensational first-round knockout of Jamahal Hill at UFC 300 last month, Pereira hoped to make the quick turnaround for a heavyweight fight with Tom Aspinall three weeks later.

Sadly, a foot injury sustained in the weeks leading up to his latest title defense ruled Pereira out of fighting in his home country.

Unless he makes a move to heavyweight, Pereira’s next task will be to take on another light heavyweight challenger — namely Magomed Ankalaev. Riding a 10-fight win streak dating back to 2018, Ankalaev is undoubtedly the next man in line for a shot at the 205-pound crown. When and where that fight takes place is yet to be determined, but the Dagestani recently suggested the two square off in October when the UFC makes its annual pitstop in Abu Dhabi.

Pereira wasn’t too keen on that idea and insisted on a “homecoming” fight at Madison Square Garden in November.

‘Poatan’ won both the UFC middleweight and light heavyweight titles in his last two appearances at the world’s most famous arena.

Ilia Topuria urged to get fighting amid UFC title belt tour it's not coming off great it's just weird

Touring his championship strap throughout his residency in Spain since his coronation in February, undisputed featherweight titleholder, Ilia Topuria has been urged to make his UFC return soon – and especially against top divisional contenders.

Topuria, the current undisputed featherweight champion, landed that moniker back in February in the main event of UFC 298 in Anaheim, stopping the dominant reign of Alexander Volkanovski with a blistering second round KO win.

Remaining unbeaten with his stoppage of Volkanovski, Ilia Topuria was spotted at the Santiago Bernabeu in his residency of Spain, parading the championship belt through the country’s capital city.

And accused recently by UFC color-commentator, Joe Rogan of openly rejecting an immediate title fight rematch with the above-mentioned, Volkanovski as soon as August at UFC 305 in Perth, Ilia Topuria was also recently blasted by Max Holloway – who questioned the lengthy nature of his call out.

Ilia Topuria urged to fight top contenders in UFC return

Himself offering to defend his title against perennial contender, Brian Ortega should Holloway refuse to put his symbolic BMF crown on the line in their pairing, Topuria has been urged to get on with it by Hall of Fame inductee, Daniel Cormier.

“You need the name that comes from the generation before,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “Ilia (Topuria) seems to be taking another approach. I don’t know exactly what it is, though, because he said he wasn’t going to fight Brian Ortega, he said he wasn’t going to fight Max Holloway, and now it sounds like he’s not wanting to fight Alexander Volkanovski again.”

“He has to make a statement saying, ‘This is what I want as the champ’ and then put the ball in Max’s court to deny it,” Cormier explained. “But right now, it’s not coming off great. He’s batting away all these guys with no clear idea of who else there is – it’s just weird. He’s not telling us what’s next, but he’s saying no to a lof things that can be right no. I don’t know that you can do that as the champ.”

Ryan Clark slams 'Boring' Aljamain Sterling after Daniel Cormier proposes next BMF title fight

Aljamain Sterling may have gotten the job done, but he left a lot to be desired in his featherweight debut.

After surrendering the bantamweight belt to ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley last summer, the ‘Funk Master’ made the move to 145 in search of a new division to conquer. He got off to a good start at UFC 300, scoring a decisive decision victory over top 10 ranked contender Calvin Kattar.

Though fight fans were less than thrilled with Sterling’s grapple-heavy approach, former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier believes his dominant performance made the ‘Funk Master’ a legitimate candidate to challenge for the BMF title — now held by featherweight cornerstone Max Holloway following his buzzer-beating knockout of Justin Gaethje at the landmark event.

“Put ‘Aljo’ in the BMF title fight, yes,” Cormier said on Good Guy/Bad Guy. “If anybody is a BMF, they can do what ‘Aljo’ did at UFC 300. You go up a weight class, you dominate somebody in the grappling like that, that’s a BMF, Ryan. Put ‘Aljo’ in the next title fight.”

Ryan Clark Sounds off on Aljamain Sterling

During the episode, Cormier reunited with his DC & RC co-host, former Pittsburgh Steeler and Super Bowl champion Ryan Clark, who was not afraid to disagree with the UFC Hall of Famer’s BMF title suggestion.

“It is, DC. It’s a ‘boring motherf*cker. That’s what that is,” Clark responded. “That’s what the BMF would stand for if Aljamain Sterling was the new BMF champion.

“I love him. He has to win. You gotta go out and win, that’s why it’s called mixed martial arts. Chael [Sonnen] landed strikes against Anderson Silva and rocked him then Chael took it to the ground and dominated him on the ground. I have no problem with that. Chael is absolutely a BMF. If it is two names that are that big, I am okay with the fight going that way. Just don’t put the belt up. Put the real belt up for that fight. Do not put the BMF up for it” (h/t MMA Mania).

Dana White claims Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler won't happen until the Fall in UFC

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined since 2021, yet to return since fracturing his left tibia and fibula in an opening round doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat to common-foe, Dustin Poirier.

And as for Chandler, it’s been almost two years away from action for the Kill Cliff FC staple, who himself has yet to return since he was submitted by the above-mentioned, Poirier in their grudge fight at Madison Square Garden in late 2022.

Finally set to fight the Missouri veteran at UFC 303 in at the end of June atop an International Fight Week card, McGregor – who was selected as an ideal candidate to compete for a would-be inaugural 165lbs crown, has been further backed by former two-division titleholder, Daniel Cormier.

“I believe that if they’re [the UFC] going to do a 165lbs division, it should have a name attached to the weight class that is so big that it draws people’s attention,” Daniel Cormier said during an appearance on Good Guy / Bad Guy. “Conor McGregor being that name. Michael Chandler, on the other hand, will benefit from being in the right place at the riht time, where these guys would then fight for the super lightweight championship of the world, because that’s what I believe it is.”

And while Lafayette veteran, Cormier calls for the induction of a super lightweight division, McGregor bout with Chandler has already been nailed down at the welterweight limit of 170lbs, as per an official announcement from promotional CEO, Dana White.
