Fans might have to wait a bit longer before seeing WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder fight Anthony Joshua, or rematch Tyson Fury.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that a rematch between Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz is being targeted for September at the Staples Center in L.A. The two dates floating around as of this writing are September 7 and 28. The fight will reportedly be broadcasted by Showtime Boxing.

Wilder and Ortiz previously met back in March of last year. Ortiz came very close to handing “The Bronze Bomber” the first loss of his career. However, Wilder bounced back in the 10th round with a TKO victory over his Cuban counterpart. It was a tremendous heavyweight affair, and a rematch should prove to be extremely interesting.

Since the fight, Wilder has gone to a Draw with Tyson Fury after their 12 rounder in December, and most recently obliterated Dominic Breazeale in just two minutes earlier this month. Ortiz, who was defeated for the first time as a pro against Wilder, has gone on a three-fight win streak since the defeat.

Two of those victories came via TKO, the latter, against German prospect Christian Hammer, was won via unanimous decision.

Anthony Joshua: Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury Should Face Me Now

Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua believes Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury are wasting their time by not fighting him. Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua believes Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury are wasting their time by not fighting him.

Joshua will take on short-notice opponent Andy Ruiz Jr. at New York’s Madison Square Garden on June 1. Meanwhile, Wilder most recently disposed of Dominic Breazeale, while Fury is scheduled to face Tom Schwartz next on June 15.

It doesn’t seem like either one will face Joshua next and if anything, are more likely to have their own rematch. But “AJ” believes it would be to their benefit to face him now rather than later.

“Wilder and Fury are wasting their own time,” Joshua said (via Independent). “They should fight me now. If I was them, I’d rather have it now than later. I don’t know what they are waiting for. They’re coming to the end of their careers, 10, 11 years as professionals. I’ve been doing it five years.

“I don’t think they’re going to get much better. It’s worse for them because I have another five years honing my skills. I’m not the finished article yet. I’m still working towards certain things so imagine another five years or another 18 months in my bag of tricks. I’ll have a few more skills I can do. The longer they leave it, the worse it’ll be for them so they should crack on.”

Starving The Fans

With all three heavyweights contracted to different broadcasters, Joshua may have to wait even longer to face either Wilder or Fury.

Having already accused the American of starving the fans of what they want to see, he believes it’s the same case with Fury.

“It’s the fans who are being starved of it,” Joshua explained. “It was all about me when Wilder started calling me out two years ago. ‘What’s Joshua doing? What’s Wilder doing?’ It was all about us, great profile building.

“Wilder looked like a crazy man calling me out, Fury came back. And then nothing has happened. So now the fans are the ones getting the hard end of the stick. I don’t know why it’s not happening with all that talk and profile building. Figures being thrown around, dates and venues. It’s not about me anymore. I feel sorry for the people who want to see it.”

Hopefully fans get to see Joshua face at least one of the unbeaten heavyweights sooner rather than later.

Anthony Joshua will be making his return to the ring next week (Sat. June 1, 2019).

Famed boxing promoter Eddie Hearn doesn’t expect WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder to be in attendance for the affair. He believes such an appearance would put far too much pressure on the American heavyweight champ to make a fight happen with Joshua next, as he tells Metro UK:

“I think because Deontay knows he’s not going to fight Joshua, or he doesn’t want to fight Joshua, there’s going to be a lot of pressure on him,’ Hearn said.

“If he’s there, we’re going to put it on him, the media are going to put it on him and the fans are going to put it on him. And if he knows he’s fighting Ortiz, there probably isn’t a huge amount of point in him going to be honest. But I hope he goes. What can we do? We want the undisputed fight, we can’t make it any clearer.

“I don’t care about Deontay Wilder, we’ve got to care about Andy Ruiz. Next week, Britain takes over Madison Square Garden and America get to see Anthony Joshua live and up close. All I care about is Joshua-Ruiz. Once that’s dealt with, and touch wood AJ gets the win, we’ll move on and push as hard as we can for that fight [against Wilder].”

Joshua will be facing Andy Ruiz from Madison Square Garden on June 1. He will be putting his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles up for grabs. The Englishman is undefeated in the ring, with a record of 22-0, 21 of them coming by way of knockout. He’ll be facing Ruiz, a former heavyweight title challenger who has only lost one fight in his career – to Joseph Parker.

As for Wilder, he just obliterated Dominic Breazeale defending his WBC heavyweight title. It only took him just over two minutes to render Breazeale unconscious. The victory extended his undefeated record to 41-0-1, the tie on his record being against Tyson Fury.

Fans have been clamoring for a fight between Joshua and Wilder for years. Unfortunately, negotiations have proven to be unsuccessful thus far.

Tyson Fury: Deontay Wilder Can Go ‘Suck My Nuts’

They might not be fighting each other next, but Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder have no problem taking shots at one another.

“The Gypsy King” led the way recently during an interview with TMZ Sports, calling “The Bronze Bomber” a “bum,” and saying he’ll rematch his former opponent at any place, at any time (via Bad Left Hook):

“Wilder is a bum. He’s got a puncher’s chance, that’s it,” Fury said. “Like I said, Wilder is a massive dosser, and he works for me. That’s all Wilder is.

“He’s a big, bum dosser, bum city, hashtag anytime, any place, anywhere. When we fight again, I promise him he’ll be looking at the stars.”

Fury left Wilder with one last sour message – “go suck my nuts”:

“Deontay Wilder, go suck my nuts,” Fury said. “You wanna do anything about it, bitch, come find me.”

Fury and Wilder initially fought for the American’s WBC heavyweight title back in December. After a great contest, which included two knockdowns from Wilder, the fight ended in a Majority Draw.

Many believe Fury out-classed Wilder on the feet. But Wilder came closer to finishing the fight, especially on his second knockdown, in which many believed Fury to be completely unconscious. However, Fury got back to his feet and lived to see the judges’ scorecards.

After failed negotiations for a rematch, it might be some time before they meet inside the ring again.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) superstar Conor McGregor was impressed with WBC boxing champ Deontay Wilder’s big knockout of Dominic Breazeale on Saturday night.

McGregor, who hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, stays relevant in the combat sports community through social media.

The former double-champ was watching on Saturday night as Wilder knocked out challenger Breazeale inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with one punch at 2:17 of Round 1.

“That was some demolition job at the Barclays center tonight! Wow ? #Power”, McGregor wrote on Twitter.

McGregor praised Wilder again in a second tweet:

McGregor holds a professional boxing record of 0-1 thanks to his ill-advised attempt to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr, who many boxing experts consider the greatest of all-time.

While it’s quite clear “Notorious” admires Wilder’s one-punch knockout power, it’s unlikely McGregor sets foot in the boxing realm again.
