Deontay Wilder is the current WBC heavyweight champion of the world.

With such a huge title around his waist, it comes with an equally sized target on his back. Recently, Wilder scheduled a title defense against Dominic Breazeale over another top-ranked mandatory challenger in Dillian Whyte.

Speaking to Express Sport, Whyte claims he believes the move was made by the WBC to protect Wilder (via Boxing Scene):

“I think the WBC is protecting Deontay Wilder,” Whyte said. “Maybe because he’s the first reigning American champion in a long time or whatever.

“They definitely seem to protect him because the Breazeale vs [Eric] Molina fight isn’t even eligible because Molina was banned from all sport formally. They don’t even run a clean boxing programme so I don’t even understand how they could make someone like that compete. It’s crazy.”

Wilder’s last fight was a massive heavyweight title defense against lineal champion Tyson Fury. Both men fought 12 great rounds of boxing, in which Wilder nearly finished the fight twice. Despite many believing Fury should’ve earned a judge’s nod for outboxing the American, a Majority Draw was reached.

After failed attempts at locking down a rematch, Wilder will no defend his title against Breazeale on May 18 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

WBC heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder will return to the ring in May.

However, he won’t be taking on a household name. Instead, he’ll be facing mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale. Many fans would’ve preferred to have seen Wilder rematch Tyson Fury, or even finally challenge heavyweight king Anthony Joshua. In regards to Joshua, Wilder co-manager Shelly Finkel told Tha Boxing Voice such a match-up will have to wait.

Wilder’s plate is full at the moment. If Joshua wants to fight “The Bronze Bomber,” it’ll have to wait until 2020 (via Boxing Scene):

“He’s fighting his mandatory now, then we have a pretty full slate for this year, then we will discuss fighting Joshua next year. The name calling, the immaturities that are in the press, they won’t help but won’t hinder making the fight,” Finkel said.

“They are all in the works. There is nothing confirmed at this point, the only thing that is locked in is the fight with Breazeale on May 18. If everything goes the way we hope it will, we will then discuss his next fight. I have spoken with [DAZN top executive] John Skipper more than once.

“Him and I are developing a very good relationship, I’m very fond of him. Those talks will continue, and eventually it will lead to a fight of Deontay and Joshua.”

Joshua is also occupied for the time being. He’ll be defending his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles against Andy Ruiz from Madison Square Garden. The fight goes down on June 1 and will be Joshua’s United States debut.

Initially, Joshua was scheduled to face Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller. However, a failed drug test from Miller led to an opponent change.

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is dissapointed his rematch with Tyson Fury didn’t materialize.

“The Bronze Bomber” seems to have figured out why that fight isn’t taking place next for him. Speaking to the Richard Poxon podcast, Wilder said the Englishman is avoiding a rematch with him because “The Gypsy King” realizes he’s a health risk (via Boxing Scene):

“We talked and he said he wanted the fight. It happened just like that. I didn’t have to fight Fury, but I wanted to fight the best. Don’t doubt me when I want to close all conversations of doubt,” Wilder said.

“I wanted to give it to the fans, live and in action. To prove to you I am the best. I don’t see nothing wrong with that. People who don’t want to see that are not a fan of boxing, you’re just here to cause chaos.

“I can’t control these guys and the path they choose in life. They going to choose what’s best for them and their career. I’m a risk, a high-risk. I’m a massive risk to your health and your career.

“When they stalled for a whole week with the contract in front of them, I knew something was up. My manager Shelly was like, ‘they haven’t answered the phone. Maybe they’ll call back’. With Shelly and (Frank) Warren being friends, we knew something was up when he wasn’t answering his phone calls. But it’s all good.”

Wilder and Fury fought to a split draw back in December after putting on a tremendous heavyweight contest. Many believe Fury outboxed the American powerhouse, however, the WBC champ scored the only two knockdowns of the fight.

An immediate rematch was initially being worked on, but with Fury signing on with ESPN and Top Rank Boxing, and Wilder inking a three-fight deal with Showtime, the contest seems unlikely.
