Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder certainly proved a lot when they shared the ring earlier this month.
But in former WBA light-welterweight boxing champion Amir Khan’s eyes, they proved they’re the two best heavyweights in the world. Khan recently spoke to Boxing Scene and said that he doesn’t believe Wilder will be defending his WBC heavyweight title against heavyweight king Anthony Joshua anytime soon.
Instead, he believes a rematch against Fury is the more likely outcome. Not only that, but it makes the most sense, seeing as they proved they’re the two best heavyweights in the world with what they did together at the Staples Center in Los Angles earlier this month:
“I don’t think the Joshua fight will happen,” Khan said. “There’s a lot to lose for Joshua in that fight. But, I can see the rematch (between Wilder and Fury) happening more likely.”
“It was a great fight and I can’t wait to see the second one. And I think it’s showed the world that the best two heavyweights in the world have to be Fury and Deontay Wilder. Because both of them look unbeatable.”
Wilder and Fury went 12 hard-fought rounds on December 1st. Many believe Fury got the better of the American in the technical department, but Wilder certainly made things interesting. He scored the only two knockdowns of the entire fight, and the latter in the 12th round arguably could’ve been ruled a knockout.
Nonetheless, the fight certainly left an impression on WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. The Englishman seems interested now more than ever in booking a fight with Wilder at the moment. Only time will tell what’s next for these three men at heavyweight.

The boxing heavyweight division looks to be in its best spot in quite some time.
WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua currently sits atop the division. He’s followed closely behind by WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. And of course, lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is still at the top. Recently, Wilder and Fury shared the ring inside Los Angeles’ Staples Center for the WBC crown.
Both men went all 12 rounds in a highly controversial contest. While most believed Fury got the better of Wilder technically, Wilder scored the only two knockdowns of the fight. The latter knockdown came in the 12th round, and very well could’ve been ruled a knockout. However, Fury miraculously got to his feet and was able to finish the contest. In the end, the judges ruled the fight a split decision draw.
Now, talk of a rematch next year is what many are expecting. But Joshua would like to get in on the mix after seeing all the hype Wilder vs. Fury was able to generate. Recently, Joshua spoke to The Sun UK and was asked for his thoughts on the match-up. In regards to Wilder’s second knockdown in the fight, which many thought was a knockout, Joshua isn’t buying that the Englishman was
He simply believes Fury got tired and needed a few seconds to recover:
“I think he was just tired – needed that five seconds to kind of gather himself and he got up and continued. He was tired. His body gave up but his spirit didn’t. When you’re out cold, your spirit’s not intact, your body’s not intact.
“I think he just went down, tired, five seconds, and then his spirit was like: ‘I’m still here’. Then he got up and continued to fight. That’s my opinion on it, because when you get hit flush, your spirit and body disconnect.
“You’re not with it. But his spirit was still in intact it rose him up and he realised: ‘Hang on, I’m still fighting.’”

Anthony Joshua wants to fight Deontay Wilder.
Joshua currently reigns as the IBF, WBA, WBO, and IBO world heavyweight champion of boxing. However, there’s one belt missing from his collection – and it’s around Wilder’s waist. The WBC heavyweight crown rests comfortably on the head of “The Bronze Bomber.” Wilder has been itching to get his hands on the Englishman for quite some time.
Recently, Joshua joined ESPN’s “First Take” and was asked about a potential match-up with Wilder. Joshua said the fight would have to be in England, Wilder’s financial demands would have to be realistic, and he’s eying an April date (via Boxing Scene):
“My situation is that [Wilder is] saying that I won’t fight him. As I’ve said, I’m willing to fight Deontay Wilder on April 13th in London, so I don’t know what more I have to do to get that message across. He’s more interested in fighting Tyson Fury. Tyson Fury holds no world titles,” Joshua said.
“Let me say this, I can’t control what Deontay Wilder or what Tyson Fury does or even as far as what they say – but what I can control is what I say and what I’m doing.
“I made sure with the negotiations, I’ve booked the date in advance, set the venue in advance, and I’m making my point clear in front of everyone watching that I’m willing to fight any one of these guys – especially Deontay Wilder on April 13th at Wembley. What more can I say?”
Joshua’s sudden interest likely comes after seeing Wilder go 12 rounds with Tyson Fury. Wilder defended his WBC heavyweight title against “The Gypsy King” earlier this month. Many believe Fury got the better of Wilder technically, however, the American scored the only two knockdowns of the fight. With that being said, the judges turned in a controversial split decision draw.
Many believe Fury should’ve gotten the nod, but it’s also believed some holes in Wilder’s game were exposed. One thing can’t be denied – Wilder has the power to finish the fight no matter what round it’s in. Just look at his 12th round knockdown of Fury, for example, which arguably could’ve been ruled a knockout.
Regardless, should Joshua and Wilder find themselves booked in a colossal heavyweight match-up in 2019, both men will certainly have their hands full.
