Brunson Attributes Loss To Adesanya To Low-Rate Training Partners

Top-ranked middleweight Derek Brunson says he had less-than-ideal training partners in the lead-up to the highly publicized fight between Israel Adesanya. The two middleweights met in 2018. Top-ranked middleweight Derek Brunson says he had less-than-ideal training partners in the lead-up to the highly publicized fight between Israel Adesanya.

The two middleweights met in 2018. At the time, Brunson was proven in the UFC with plenty of first-round stoppages. However, Adesanya perhaps caught the middleweight at the best time as he was a little over ten months removed from being knocked out by Ronaldo Souza for the second time.

The #4-ranked Derek Brunson illuminated some of the problems he had during his first camp with Adesanya. For starters, the 185-pound middleweight claims he did not exactly have high-level training partners.

“I was training with soccer dads, firemen, police officers, janitors,” Brunson told The MMA Hour. “Like, that was who my training partners were. One UFC fight, I had a homeless guy I was training with. He used to be like an amateur boxer — a homeless guy. I tried to go find him after my fight and give him money, but I couldn’t find him. Nobody could find him.”

Apparently, Brunson moved on from those training partners, and the transition seems to have paid off. The 37-year-old started training with Sanford MMA, and the results speak for themselves.

Fast forward to 2021, and “Blonde Brunson” remains undefeated. The American has won his last three bouts and two by way of finish (1 submission and 1 TKO). It is hard to deny the results of Brunson’s handiwork as of late. With back-to-back wins against Kevin Holland and Darren Till, Brunson’s dominating pace and wrestling pressure have kept him busy at the top of 185-pounds.

As the showdown between Brunson and Jared Cannonier looms over UFC 270 in January, the results will certainly give way to a new contender ready to challenge for the middleweight throne.

Derek Brunson Disputes Dern’s Claims Of An MMA Double Standard

Derek Brunson is challenging Mackenzie Dern after the strawweight insisted that women have to prove themselves in MMA more than their male counterparts.

As her headlining act against Marina Rodriguez approaches, Dern is ready to put her top five ranking on the line. Ahead of her fight, the 115-pound fighter believes there are some issues that men do not contend with as professional athletes. The Brazilian-American suggests that ‘beautiful’ female MMA fighters handle increased pressure since they attract a wider audience.

“You always have to prove yourself,” Dern said to MMA Fighting. “You see men, if men are pretty in people’s opinion, men make fun of them, ‘He’s not that good.’ But women, no, they say, ‘Let’s all watch her fight because she’s beautiful.’ We go through that, you have to prove yourself even more.”

The 28-year-old admits after announcing her pregnancy she lost thousands of Instagram followers. In addition, the strawweight even said she lost sponsors after the fact. Dern believes the pervasive issue will continue but chooses to represent herself as a mother, wife, and fighter instead of being exploited just for her looks.

“I’m still trying to grow [my fanbase] among women, but I think that’s coming naturally as I represent myself as mother, wife, and fighter,” she said. “But still, I lost 50,000 followers fast when I announced my pregnancy, and 80,000 total until my next fight, but that has definitely changed. Dern continued. The MMA [community] has more men than women so it’s impossible to have more women than men [as followers].”

Derek Brunson Disputes Dern’s Assessment Of The MMA Community

After hearing Dern’s comments about the MMA community, the #4-ranked middleweight Derek Brunson chimed in and gave his thoughts on the perceived double standard.

“*even less* Hespect ! Never have I ever seen a “beautiful mma women” with less than 500k followers” Brunson posted.

It appears the middleweight simply isn’t convinced by Dern’s argument. Brunson currently has 248K Instagram followers compared to Dern’s 961K. While the double standard may indeed be present, Brunson’s comment suggests that, so far, it has only helped women build their brands as professional MMA fighters.

What do you make of Dern’s assertion of a possible double standard in MMA?

Derek Brunson doesn’t believe Darren Till actually had a torn ACL before their fight.

Brunson and Till headlined a Fight Night card on September 4 where Brunson dominated the fight en route to a third-round submission. After the fight, Till’s coach, Colin Heron revealed Till tore his ACL.

“It happened about nine weeks out, wrestling,” Heron told ESPN. “We got it scanned, looked at properly. The results came back as a completely torn ACL. So, he’s out, isn’t he? That was the advice from me and the doctors. Rest. You can’t do nothing. Surgery is a must. No running, no fast movement, no impact.

“Darren being Darren, he said, ‘Can we give it two weeks and see if I can start running and hit pads?’ And I’m like, ‘No, not really. A torn ACL doesn’t get better by itself. You’re talking surgery and then six months of rehab alone.’ But before you know it he’s talked me into it, as he does. I’ve really only got one option then: support him, whatever his decision is. If he’s not going to take my advice, I’ve got to stick with him. I can’t disown him. We made the best of it that we could.”

Derek Brunson Unconvinced Of ACL Injury

Now, Derek Brunson has responded to the comments where he doesn’t think Till actually had a torn ACL as he was doing squats just two weeks before the fight.

“Listen, I don’t care about none of that. Till is the pull-out king. If he was that injured, he would have pulled out,” Brunson said on the MMA Hour (via Liverpoolecho). “Till was doing hang cleans and squats and deadlifts like two weeks ago. He didn’t tear his ACL. And he never said that; that’s what his coach said.”

Whether or not Till actually has a torn ACL is uncertain. Regardless, Brunson got his hand raised and he will now fight Jared Cannonier at UFC 270.

Derek Brunson Says Darren Till’s Team Was Lying About A Torn ACL

Derek Brunson highly doubts the legitimacy of Darren Till tore his ACL prior to their meeting at UFC Fight Night 191.

Brunson was a guest on Ariel Helwani’s ‘The MMA Hour’ and spoke his mind about many things. He talked about his prior fight with Israel Adesanya but, he touched on his latest fight against Darren Till. Brunson won that main event matchup against Till via third-round submission. There weren’t many points in the fight that trended toward Till either.

After the fight, Till’s coach Colin Heron claimed that Till had fought with a torn ACL and he urged ‘The Gorilla’ not to fight. Heron claimed that Till tore his ACL 9 weeks before the fight and was in no place to be fighting that quick.

Brunson had his own thoughts about the possibility of Till having a torn ACL going into the fight, “Listen, I don’t care about none of that. Till is the pull-out king. If he was that injured, he would have pulled out. Till was doing hang cleans and squats and deadlifts like two weeks ago. He didn’t tear his ACL. And he never said that; that’s what his coach said. I saw him at the UFC Institute, man. He was doing box jumps, hang cleans, squats, all of that.” (Sportskeeda)

Derek Brunson has caught the middleweight challengers’ attention, as he may be next in line for a possible title fight after the Whittaker vs Adesanya fight. The only obstacle standing in the way of Brunson’s claim at a title shot is Jared Cannonier. Both of these men have been beating anyone that has been put in front of them. Cannonier’s most recent win was over Kelvin Gastelum( The closest a middleweight fighter has come to beating Izzy).

Do you agree with Derek Brunson? Is Darren Till’s coach lying about the scouser suffering a torn ACL?

Brunson Says He’ll Do Better Against Adesanya Than “Meathead” Vettori

The new and improved “Blonde Brunson” believes he has more to offer against Israel Adesanya than Marvin Vettori. The new and improved “Blonde Brunson” believes he has more to offer against Israel Adesanya than Marvin Vettori.

Since notching up his fifth straight win against Darren Till earlier this month, Brunson has been campaigning for a rematch with Adesanya, the man responsible for his last loss back in 2018. In that encounter, “Stylebender” made light work of Brunson, earning a first-round TKO victory that announced his arrival as a serious title contender. Three fights later, in 2019, Israel became middleweight champ.

Brunson is now, however, a different fighter—and it’s not just the bleached blonde hair. The once divisional gatekeeper, now #4 ranked middleweight has bounced back into title contention with dominant wins over promising up and comers Kevin Holland and Edmen Shahbazyan. And his confidence is sky-high, with the 37-year-old recently claiming that “Blonde Brunson” beats Adesanya 10 out of 10 times.

Derek Brunson Critiques Vettori’s Performance Against Adesanya, Explains Why He’ll Do Better

With such self-belief, Brunson believes he should now be next in line for a title shot, and that when he gets the chance, he’ll fare better than Adesanya’s last victim, Marvin Vettori.

When Vettori faced Adesanya in June, many speculated that his wrestling would pose a challenge to the champ. Speaking to The Schmo, Brunson offered his analysis of why it fell short.

“Because Marvin’s a solid wrestler. He’s more of like a meathead wrestler. He (pushes) guys against the cage, get doubles, he’s really strong, you know? So he don’t really have any technical finishes and stuff like that,” said Brunson.

An accomplished wrestler himself, Brunson feels that the improvements he’s made to his game since the Adesanya loss will see him outperform Vettori.

“So in the first fight with Izzy, I got to a lot of spots that I know right now I would finish, just with making the changes, going out to Sanford, getting tougher training partners. So yeah, me and Marvin are two different guys when it comes to grappling and wrestling,” said Brunson.

What do you think? Can Derek Brunson defeat Israel Adesanya in a rematch?

Derek Brunson thinks he will be fighting Israel Adesanya for the belt early next fight.

Adesanya is expected to rematch Robert Whittaker in January next year in a highly-anticipated fight. However, nothing has been made official and for Brunson, he thinks the challenger won’t make it to the fight for some reason. With that, Brunson says he will be staying ready to step in.

“I don’t know. We’ll see, man. For some weird reason, I feel like Whittaker doesn’t make it to the fight,” Brunson said to The Schmo. “Like, I’m not wishing any bad will on him, but I just feel like, man, it’s gonna be my opportunity to step in for that title shot.”

Although many think Brunson will need to take another fight against Jared Cannonier if Whittaker does have to pull out, Brunson would likely be the guy to step in on short notice. He has made it known he deserves a title shot and that’s all he wants for his next fight.

“I’m tired of these guys not mentioning my name,” Brunson shouted after submitting Darren Till. “You know [Israel Adesanya], look at the camera, mention my name. I heard you mentioning Till and [Jared] Cannonier. Cause I’ve been busting my butt, four years after my loss to get back to this point. I’m ready to contend.”

Derek Brunson is currently on a five-fight winning streak and coming off a submission win over Darren Till. Prior to that, he earned a dominant decision victory over Kevin Holland after a TKO win over Edmen Shahbazyan. He also beat Ian Heinisch and Elias Theodorou during this five-fight winning streak. His last loss was a first-round TKO loss to Israel Adesanya at UFC 230 so the storyline is there for a rematch to be made if Whittaker can’t make it to the fight.

Brunson is scheduled to face Jared Cannonier at UFC 270 in January.
