Former UFC fighter Kevin Lee announced on social media that he’ll be making his Eagle FC debut against another former UFC colleague, Diego Sanchez.

Lee announced the news in a since-deleted post on his Instagram, though the post could’ve been deleted in the event the contract hasn’t been finalized. But, Lee had alluded to a matchup with Sanchez in recent weeks since signing with the promotion.

“Christmas came early this year! Contract signed,” Lee said. “I’m fighting the first-ever Ultimate Fighter on March 11th in Miami.” (h/t BJPenn.com)

Kevin Lee Vs. Diego Sanchez Puts Two Recent UFC Outcasts Against One Another

Lee and Sanchez are just a few of the names that have been let go from the UFC this year. Lee was recently released by the promotion after being served with a drug-related suspension, while Sanchez’s release came after a back-and-forth with the UFC brass and his former manager, Joshua Fabia.

Both men are desperately looking to get back on track in their respective MMA careers. Lee has lost four of his last five fights in the cage, and most recently against Daniel Rodriguez in August.

Sanchez was originally supposed to fight Donald Cerrone at a UFC Fight Night event at the beginning of the year but withdrew on short notice. Cerrone ended up fighting Alex Morono.

Lee is a former interim lightweight title challenger who lost to Tony Ferguson at UFC 216. Before that, he had been regarded as one of the top prospects in the sport with a series of impressive wins over Michael Chiesa, Francisco Trinaldo, and others.

The loss to Ferguson would be the first domino to fall in Lee’s recent struggles. He would go on to lose one-sided bouts against Al Iaquinta and Rafael dos Anjos, with a couple of wins over the likes of Edson Barboza and Gregor Gillespie.

Lee was allegedly targeted in free agency by the likes of the PFL, Triller, and other smaller promotions. He opted to sign with Eagle FC, the promotion led by former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Former UFC fighter Diego Sanchez has provided a positive update on his health after a multiple-week stay in the hospital.

Sanchez had been fighting for his life after a combination of pneumonia and COVID-19 left him in a hospital bed. The illnesses also allegedly caused Sanchez to develop clots in both of his legs as a result of the diagnosis.

Late last month, Sanchez had posted a detailed tweet in which he described his experience with COVID-19. After fighters such as Colby Covington downplayed the virus, Sanchez described it as “evil” as he fought for his life in the hospital.

Diego Sanchez’s Health Has Turned Around After Recent Scare

Things turned around for Sanchez over the weekend as he posted a brief, albeit encouraging update to his Twitter followers.

“Happy and healthy. Thanks be to God,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez has had quite the wild ride in 2021. After withdrawing from a UFC fight against fellow fan-favorite Donald Cerrone, he entered a feud between his then-manager, Joshua Fabia, and the UFC brass. The promotion opted to cut ties with Sanchez after a tenure in the UFC that stemmed from his win on Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Sanchez is widely regarded as a major pioneer in UFC history, helping grow the sport of MMA, especially during the 2000s. He’s currently a free agent and has allegedly been in talks with promotions such as Bare Knuckle FC and Eagle FC for his services.

Earlier today it was confirmed that former UFC lightweight contender, Kevin Lee, has inked a deal with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC.

‘The Motown Phenom’ will make his promotional debut on March 11 in Miami and will compete in the brand new 165lb division.Lee struggled with his weight throughout his UFC career, he often missed the lightweight limit but never seemed to be quite big enough to compete with the elite welterweight fighters.

During a recent interview with LowKickMMA, Lee revealed that the fact Eagle FC has a 165lb division was a big reason why he decided to sign with the promotion.

“That was huge,” Lee said of being allowed to compete at 165lbs in Eagle FC. “Not only will my body feel better, I feel like it’s my natural weight class but it’s brand new. So, that means I get to be the inugruarl champion for any promotion. I think in the future, once we get away from the UFC being the top and all this, those things are write well in history. So to be the first 165 world champion means a lot to me.”

Lee went on to discuss who he could potentially face in his Eagle FC debut and at the minute he appears to have just one man on the shortlist.

“I’ve heard Diego Sanchez’s name being thrown around,” Lee said. “Diego would be a great first fight, we’ll put on a war. So, I think Diego Sanchez is where we’re looking at.”

‘The Nightmare’ hasn’t fought since being released by the UFC earlier this year. As of late, Sanchez has been in the hospital battling serious complications from contracting COVID-19.

“This has been the fight of a fighters life,” Diego Sanchez tweeted about his COVID-19 battle in November. “No fight camp or opponent has dominated me like this. It’s been a long fight last night I think I (sic) finally win a round with the help of my corner, God, Jesus, (and) Holy Spirit & and the many candles prayers lit in the hearts of my loved ones #faith.“

Sanchez appears to be on the mend but is still a long way from being fighting fit.

“As for my health I’m good still out of breath but getting better everyday,” Sanchez wrote in his latest Twitter post.

Former UFC lightweight title challenger and The Ultimate Fighter 1 victor, Diego Sanchez has detailed his ongoing battle with COVID-19 — claiming that no opponent or rigorous fight camp compares to the battle he is currently facing.

Sanchez, who was released from the UFC back in May ahead of an expected retirement fight against former Jackson-Wink MMA training partner, Donald Cerrone, recently confirmed that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus — and required hospitalization. Sanchez confirmed he had received his entire fight purse, win bonus, as well as sponsorship pay from the organization following his release.

Posting on his official social media, the 39-year-old Sanchez confirmed that he was battling pneumonia and COVID-19 from hospital, and confirmed he had been diagnosed with blood clots in both his legs as a result.

Diego Sanchez details his ongoing battle after testing positive for COVID-19

The Albuquerque, New Mexico native provided an update on his condition in hospital last night, where he detailed how his battle with COVID-19 was more difficult than any fight he had competed in across his professional career, or any fight camp he utilized to prepare for a fight.

This has been the fight of a fighters life,” Diego Sanchez tweeted. “No fight camp or opponent has dominated me like this. It’s been a long fight last night I think I (sic) finally win a round with the help of my corner, God, Jesus, (and) Holy Spirit & and the many candles prayers lit in the hearts of my loved ones #faith.

Sanchez, who also recently cut ties with the highly-criticized head coach and guru, Joshua Fabia, last competed professionally back in September of last year on ‘Fight Island’ in a unanimous decision loss to Jake Matthews.

The inaugural Ultimate Fighter tournament victor was recently linked with an eventual move to the David Feldman-led Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship banner, however, at the time of publication, a deal between both parties has yet to be struck.

Diego Sanchez endured a nightmare Thanksgiving in the hospital after contracting COVID-19 and struggling to deal with some of it’s “evil” symptoms.

On November 19, Sanchez took to social media to list the pretty severe COVID-19 symptoms he had been experiencing while simultaneously taking a shot at Colby Covington who previously referred to the virus as “the common cold.”

“Shitting, coughing, pukin, constant hot cold fevers, pain in every joint, migraines, 5 days no sleep and constantly short of breath,” Sanchez wrote. “My boy @luisbaboon warned me I had no idea it was this evil!!! @ColbyCovMMA was talkin that shit saying it’s just a common cold. for all the sick.”

The UFC veteran thought he was cured a day later but has since taken a turn for the worse and is now in the hospital dealing with some of the more severe consequences of COVID-19 including pneumonia and blood clots.

“If you qualify for regeneron antibodies they work it’s only been 6 hours and I’m feeling better! Thank you @luisbaboon for telling me about it do not wait if you get the virus it only gets worse go to ounce you know jump on it ASAP #covidmedicne,” Sanchez wrote.

“I feel like a navy seal in sleep deprivation hell week! another sleepless night, my body is cleaning out all the poison, Sanchez added. “the antibodies are working I’m told 3 days is all it takes for most people #regeneron #covidmedicine #healing

Diego Sanchez

Former UFC standout Diego Sanchez has had quite the bumpy ride in 2021, and that has continued with the former UFC veteran now being hospitalized during his battle with COVID-19.

Sanchez remains an MMA free agent after getting released by the UFC. He has been rumored to be in preliminary negotiations with Bare Knuckle FC to potentially fight former UFC colleague Mike Perry.

But Sanchez has a bigger fight on his hands at the moment, as he is currently dealing with a serious case of COVID-19. As COVID-19 variants continue to spread throughout the world, the severity of the virus remains as potent as ever.

Last week, Sanchez detailed what his experience with the virus has been like as a longtime professional athlete.

“S**tting, coughing, puking, constant hot-cold fevers. Pain in every joint, migraine, five days no sleep and constantly short of breath,” Sanchez said. “[My friend] warned me I had no idea it was this evil! [Colby Covington was] talking that s**t saying it’s just a common cold.”

Leading up to his rematch with Kamaru Usman, Covington continued to downplay the virus as ‘the common cold’, much to the dismay of Sanchez and others.

Diego Sanchez Now Hospitalized As He Battles COVID Complications

On Thanksgiving day, Sanchez went on to provide grim updates on his current condition, which includes now being hospitalized.

“Pneumonia Covid never give up”

“Blood clots now! Covid is no motha fuckin joke”

“Blood clots in both my legs”

When a fan questioned why Sanchez does not use this experience as an opportunity to advise others to get vaccinated, here is how he responded:

“I’m going thru it but I can’t say I’m sold on the vax at the current moment in time.”

It’s been a wild year for Sanchez in his personal and professional life. He was originally scheduled to fight Donald Cerrone at the beginning of the year before withdrawing from the bout on short notice. Sanchez’s former coach and advisor, Joshua Fabia had a hostile relationship with the UFC brass including Dana White that made it difficult to negotiate with him.

Sanchez hasn’t fought since losing to up-and-coming welterweight Jake Matthews at UFC 253. He is best known as the first The Ultimate Fighter winner and helped contribute to the UFC’s move to the mainstream.
