T.J. Dillashaw

Former two-time UFC bantamweight kingpin, T.J. Dillashaw has taken aim at his fellow former two-time division best and past opponent, Dominick Cruz – after the latter questioned how Dillashaw could potentially fight for a title next following an infamous two-year USADA suspension before his July return.

Dillashaw, who shared the Octagon with then-challenger, Cruz back in the main event of UFC Fight Night Boston in January of 2016, dropped the undisputed bantamweight champion to the former in the form of a close, split decision defeat.

In his most recent Octagon appearance, Dillashaw, a native of Angels Camp, headlined a July UFC Apex facility event against Cory Sandhagen, earning his place amongst title contention with a close, split judging win of his own.

However, Dillashaw has received criticism as of late for his calls for a title fight against champion, Aljamain Sterling – with many pointing to his notorious USADA anti-doping violation back in January 2020 following his flyweight title challenge loss to Henry Cejudo.

Slapped with a two-year, retroactive suspension, Dillashaw, who plys his trade under the tutelage of Duane Ludwig, tested positive for in-competition use of erythropoietin (EPO) – resulting in him relinquishing the bantamweight title.

Commenting on Dillashaw’s potential title siege against Sterling next, Cruz questioned how he could march right back into his a title tilt following his past anti-doping transgression.

T.J. Dillashaw reacts to recent comments from past opponent, Dominick Cruz

Reacting to Cruz’s comments, Dillashaw labelled the former champion a “salty c*nt”, and insisted he was clearly jealous of him.

“He (Dominick Cruz) sounds like a salty c*nt,” T.J. Dillashaw told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “I just think he’s obviously jealous of me being able to stay in the top, you know, my layoff and how long I’ve been in the sport and me still be able to come back and prove that I’m still the best. And I did lose money, right? Me not fighting for two years while being a champion is a lot of money out of my pocket. [If I] kept racking up wins, getting title defenses, I mean, we’re talking about millions and millions of dollars that I let slip through my fingers because I made a f*cking stupid mistake.”

“So yeah, I paid my time, I came back and f*ckin’ grinded to get that win on f*cking one leg and one eye, and there’s nothing you can do to deny me that it’s my shot,” T.J. Dillashaw explained. “So, like I said, he’s just being salty, and that’s kind of his personality anyways. He’s kind of an unlikeable dude, I mean, I’ve always respected him and I think he’s got a good eye for stuff, but he’s got like this chip on his shoulder where he feels like everything’s owed to him, and he’s just like always complaining about sh*t.”

Targeting an August Octagon comeback, Cruz, who holds recent wins over both Casey Kenney and Pedro Munhoz – the most recent of which at UFC 269 in December, has welcomed fights against the likes of former champions, Petr Yan, and Jose Aldo.

ABC President Michael Mizzulli has responded to Dominick Cruz’s recent criticisms about the quality of their judges.

Athletic commissions and judging have been under heavy criticism for some time now. However, former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, whose words carry a lot of weight, recently spoke out on the matter, specifically in regards to judges’ qualifications to score an MMA fight.

Cruz voiced his concern for having judges who aren’t experienced mixed martial artists themselves judging fights that can make or break an athletes’ career.

“The commissions set up a meeting for us announcers on the scoring system,” Cruz said. “Well, who’s setting up the meeting for the commissioner on what a takedown is? Who is setting up a meeting for the commissioner on choosing what a takedown is? That know what it feels like to get hit with a calf kick, compared to a high kick? …

“I’ve had to feel that feeling to know you have about three to five of those kicks before the muscle and the nerve pretty much shuts down.

“How many of these judges know that, know that feeling, know that after you get taken down five times by Khabib, on No. 7, even though he didn’t do any damage, it took seven takedowns to get that dude down.

“How tired is that guy? They’ve never been in that position. They don’t know how miserable that is.”

ABC President Responds To Cruz’s Comments

In response, ABC president Mike Mizzulli fired back at Cruz in a statement to MMA Junkie. Mizzulli pointed out how several referees and judges have combat sports backgrounds of their own.

“As the president of the ABC, I have to disagree with Mr. Cruz’s statements that judges have no experience in fighting,” Mazzulli said. “A fine example is Sal D’Amato.

“He’s a black belt in karate. Derek Cleary is a black belt in karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Eric Colon owns his own jiu-jitsu gym. Dave Tirelli owns Tiger Schulmann’s gym.

“Dave Peabody, a local judge (here) is a black belt in karate. Dan Miragliotta was a promoter and a Muay Thai fighter. Bryan Miner (was a kickboxer).

“In the future, I hope before commentators speak, they do their research.”

Mizzulli went on to explain that having experience in the sport itself doesn’t always necessarily translate to good officiating or judging of the contest. He pointed to referees and coaches in sports like basketball and football as prime examples.

“There are basketball and football coaches that have never played a snap or a game of basketball and they’re elite coaches,” Mazzulli said.

“But when it comes to judging and refereeing MMA, the people we use are highly qualified.”

Mizzulli went on to make a very interesting offer. The annual Association of Boxing Commissions Convention is set to go down in Niagara Falls this summer. Mizzulli is offering an open invitation to any fighter who would like to attend and receive a free course on how to become a judge.

“The ABC meeting is in Niagara Falls,” Mazzulli said. “As the president of the ABC, I’m inviting any fighter or commentator to attend for free and learn how to judge.

“The criteria is right on the ABC boxing website. It’s right there, so don’t tell me you can’t find it. It’s not secret.”

Former two-time UFC bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz has insisted he is ready to return to the sport right now, however, has failed to agree a date for a comeback with the organization – detailing how a fight against former champions, Petr Yan, or Jose Aldo – among others, interest him, potentially in August.

A two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, landed his second consecutive victory at UFC 269 back in December, rallying from a difficult opening round against Pedro Munhoz to defeat the Brazilian with a vintage unanimous decision win in the featured preliminary card matchup.

The win followed a prior March split decision win for Cruz against Casey Kenney – returning the San Diego native back to the winner’s enclosure following a pair of losses against former division champions, Henry Cejudo, and Cody Garbrandt.

Dominick Cruz welcomes an August return to the UFC

Speaking on his fighting future, Cruz maintains that a summer return – ideally in August would suit him most, as would a fight against the likes of former titleholders, Yan or Aldo.

“July, August, September,” Dominick Cruz said of a return date during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “August 20. (UFC 278) and the one after that, would probably make most sense, it would give me more time. Thee rounds, I could it in July, but, you know. For five, I need eight weeks.”

“I would love to fight a (Petr) Yan,” Dominick Cruz explained. “Like, Yan was a former champion, he’s nasty, he’s one of the best. Like I said, (Jose) Aldo, (Merab) Dvalishvili – just somebody above me, man. It’s not like I’m asking for some kinda weird thing, I’m just asking just to keep moving up and fighting the best guys in the division. (T.J.) Dillashaw, Aljo (Aljamain Sterling) – give me him. …”

In his most recent title reign, Cruz returned from a series of catastrophic knee injuries to defeat the aforenoted, fellow former two-time titleholder, Dillashaw with a close, unanimous decision win in January 2016, before defeating Urijah Faber with a unanimous decision win in June of that year.

Dominick Cruz knows what he must do to once again become the UFC bantamweight champion.

Cruz has not held UFC gold since 2016 when he dropped the bantamweight strap to Cody Garbrandt. Now, Cruz is in the midst of his hunt back to the gold.

Speaking on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, Cruz said it’s as simple as him remaining healthy to get back to championship status.

“Just be healthy and I’ll have the title. As long as I’m healthy, I can compete at the highest level things will fall into place.

“When you start trying to control things, or think you’re gonna control things, or think you’re gonna have something in some way, that’s when you really start to pull yourself out of the focus, move into the future where you can’t control things, then you start having bad head problems.”

Cruz has certainly struggled with injuries over the course of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, finding it difficult to stay healthy even during the peak of his 135-pound title reign. He was unsuccessful in his attempt to regain the bantamweight title against Henry Cejudo in May of 2020.

Since, “The Dominator” has racked up a two-fight win streak against competition such as Casey Kenney and Pedro Munhoz. Currently, Cruz is the No. 8-ranked bantamweight in the UFC.

With another big win, the former champion could be right back in the mix for a title shot.

What do you make of Dominick Cruz saying all he needs to do to regain the title is remain healthy? Do you think Cruz will hold UFC gold again? Sound off in the comments!

Dominick Cruz has responded to Marlon Vera’s recent taunts.

Recently, Vera called Cruz a “pu**y” for not accepting a fight with him in the past. Vera claims that Cruz declined to fight him several times. Now, Cruz has responded to Vera’s claims during an appearance on the UFC Unfiltered podcast.

“The Dominator” said he takes no offense to Vera’s words and considers his latest comments to be a bit hypocritical.

“Chito’s calling me out multiple times, and I don’t take offense to that. I get why he’s doing it. He wants to move up.

“But what I thought was so hilarious was one of the things he said is, ‘You’ve been saying you want to fight people above you. Well, now I’m above you.’

“But then after he gets done with the fight, he calls me a pussy, and then goes ahead and calls out the top 4 above him and nobody underneath him, which is the exact same thing I’ve been saying. So if I’m that, then the pot calling the kettle black on that one.”

Cruz (#8) is currently on a two-fight win streak since suffering his last loss to Henry Cejudo in May of 2020. The former bantamweight king is hoping to continue to climb the ranks and get back in the title conversation.

As for Vera, he’s currently the No. 5-ranked bantamweight in the UFC. After putting together a three-fight win streak against the likes of Frankie Edgar and Rob Font, Vera could be a fight or two away from a title opportunity.

A win over a former champion the caliber of Cruz would certainly propel him into title contention.

What do you think of the back-and-forth between Dominick Cruz and Marlon Vera? Would you like to see them scrap next? Sound off in the comments!

Dominick Cruz Mindblown That UFC Still Promotes TJ Dillashaw

Dominick Cruz is mindblown that the UFC promotes TJ Dillashaw as much as they do, compared to someone like himself.

Cruz appeared on a recent installment of the UFC Unfiltered podcast. During the episode, Matt Serra pointed out that TJ Dillashaw shouldn’t be praised for confessing to past performance-enhancing-drug usage when, as Serra put it, he only did so because he was busted. Cruz concurred and expressed frustration at how the promotion has treated Dillashaw since his return from the USADA suspension.

“You’re preaching to the choir, man,” Cruz told Serra. “I had to fight the guy on that drug. How about that? And I beat him on it. So nobody’s saying nothing about that, but that’s OK. It is what it is.

“The bottom line is: I think what blows me away is the UFC promotes that man over somebody like me who’s been healthy, clean, promoting the sport in a positive way, promoting the division in a positive way, and they’re just gonna throw him right in there in the mix.

“It’s mindblowing to me, to be honest. But that’s the way that they do business, and that’s their choice. It’s their business, not mine.”

Dillashaw and Cruz faced off back in January of 2016 with the UFC bantamweight title on the line. Cruz picked up the win via split decision to recapture the 135-pound title. As for Dillashaw, he was defeated by Henry Cejudo in January of 2019 when he dropped down to flyweight to challenge for the title.

Soon after, Dillashaw admitted to using PEDs ahead of the bout. He was subsequently handed a two-year suspension, which has since been served. Dillashaw returned to the Octagon this past July, defeating Cory Sandhagen via split decision.

As for Cruz, he currently finds himself on a two-fight win streak, hoping to get back into the title mix. Perhaps that will have him cross paths with Dillashaw once again.

What do you make of Cruz’s comments regarding the UFC still promoting Dillashaw? Do you agree? Sound off in the comments!
