Cody Garbrandt offer to rematch Dominick Cruz in July UFC

Former undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt has been revealed he’s been offered the opportunity to rematch fellow former division titleholder, Dominick Cruz as soon as July of this year by the promotion, following his recent return to the winner’s enclosure.

Garbrandt, who was expected to fight WEC veteran, Rani Yahya at UFC 285 earlier this month, managed to return to winning ways against short-notice replacement, Trevin Jones – securing an impressive unanimous decision victory.

As for Cruz, the former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, has been sidelined since headlining UFC Fight Night San Diego back in August of last year, suffering a high kick knockout loss to incoming UFC Fight Night San Antonio headliner, Marlon Vera.

Initially matching with power-puncher, Garbrandt in the co-main event of UFC 2017 in December 2016, Cruz dropped his undisputed bantamweight crown to the then-undefeated Garbrandt, in one of the most heralded championship challengers in the history of the Octagon.

Cody Garbrandt reveals an offer to rematch Dominick Cruz is on the table

Voicing his interest in a rescheduled fight against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Yahya in the future, Garbrandt also revealed he had been approached with a rematch offer against Cruz for a UFC event in July.

“It was a good fight, man – he’s (Dominick Cruz) a legend of the sport,” Cody Garbrandt told MMA Junkie Radio during an interview. “It was a great night for me to fight such a masterclass performance gaainst one of the greatest bantamweights to ever do it. And it wa great, you know? He’s still out here plugging along and doing his thing. It’s funny, Ali (Abdelaziz) hit me up the other day and was like, ‘Hey, would you like to do a Dominick Cruz rematch in July?’”

“… I’ve got nothing against Dominick, I have a lot of respect for him – not that I didn’t prior to us fighting,” Cody Garbrandt explained. “I have a lot of respect for him you know, and understanding of him. We’ve had a lot of conversations. We run into each other – I mean, that night was just my night. I feel like any night against Dominick Cruz will be my night, for sure.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has his eyes on unfinished business to conclude his career in the Octagon.

Cruz, who also held WEC gold prior to his UFC reigns, hasn’t competed since being knocked out by a brutal head kick against Marlon Vera back in August 2022.

That result, which headlined a UFC Fight Night in his home city of San Diego, snapped Cruz’s two-fight winning run and stalled his plans for a late-career rise back up the ladder at 135 pounds.

Since then, “The Dominator” has remained a prominent fixture on UFC broadcasts through his work as a color commentator and desk analyst for ESPN. But although that has left some suggesting his time as an active fighter could be up, the 39-year-old has confirmed that he as more in the tank.

During an appearance on the Anik & Florian Podcast, Cruz reiterated plans to make a comeback over two years on from his setback in California.

And more than just a fighting commitment, Cruz even has some names in mind for his return, the first being a clash with former featherweight kingpin José Aldo.

“I’m with that fight (against Aldo). I would like that fight,” Cruz said.

That bout was rumored to have been in the works for this past May’s event in Rio de Janeiro, where Aldo made his comeback from retirement and defeated Jonathan Martinez. Having had his title plans stalled by Mario Bautista at UFC 307 earlier this month, perhaps the promotion will look to book an all-legends clash with Cruz for Aldo next.

In addition to the Brazilian, “The Dominator” has his sights on a couple of rematches as he looks to right the wrongs from defeats to Cody Garbrandt and Henry Cejudo in 2016 and 2020, respectively.

“I’ve heard Henry (Cejudo) say that he would be willing to fight me if (UFC chief business officer) Hunter (Campbell) would allow it to happen,” Cruz stated. “I would rematch Henry. I would love that. … I’m not saying he didn’t beat me, but I’m saying that on a full camp, we can give an entertaining fight.

“He beat me the last fight. Okay, great. I think with me having a full camp, me not straight off surgery, me doing the training I’ve been doing, me feeling the way I feel right now…we’ll put on a really good, fun show,” Cruz continued. “So, Aldo, Henry, Cody (Garbrandt’s) getting ready to fight, so he’s got a fight coming up. But yeah, rematches for me make sense. My shoulder’s had multiple surgeries. It’s not rocket science, I don’t have tons of fights left. I’m towards the last chunk of my fights, and I want to put on a good show. So, I’m looking for a fight that makes sense.”

It remains to be seen what the UFC will line up for Cruz. But it appears clear that the fanbase has not seen the legendary former bantamweight champion make the walk for the final time.

Reigning bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has been training alongside former champion Dominick Cruz.

Sterling is rumored to be set to defend his bantamweight crown for the third time, against Henry Cejudo at UFC 288 on May 6. If the bout does go ahead, Sterling will have a stern test on his hands – while it will mark three years out of the Octagon for Cejudo, he brings with him a combat pedigree like no other.

Cejudo has an Olympic gold medal to his name, along with a 125lb and 135lb UFC title, having capped off his run in the UFC with wins over Demetrious Johnson, T.J. Dillashaw, Marlon Moraes, and Cruz.

To help with his preparation, Sterling has enlisted the help of Cejudo’s former opponent and bantamweight royalty, Cruz.

Aljamain Sterling trains with Cruz

I actually just trained with Cody Garbrandt, now I’m training with Dom,” Sterling said. “Two people I kinda went like..  Well we didn’t have the most liking of each other, but with Dom it’s different. I was respectfully calling him out. But, he’s cool.

The main premise of this is to just get good training, good quality work, a good partner who’s smart. I may pick his brains to see if there was anything that he saw.

Aljamain Sterling & Dominick Cruz

Sterling is coming off a win over T.J. Dillashaw back in October, in a fight that was over before it even really got started after a reoccurring shoulder injury handicapped Dillshaw almost immediately.

As for Cruz, now 37, the multiple-time world champion last fought against rising contender Marlon Vera, where he would be knocked out for only the second time in his career which has spanned almost two decades. It’s unclear who Cruz will face next, but he doesn’t seem willing to hang up the gloves just yet.

Should more fighters train together like Aljamain Sterling and Dominick Cruz?

Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier Will Be Absent But The Action at UFC 284 Will Not Be

The card will be headlined by the lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski. The Russian champion will defend his title against the current 145-pound titleholder. Volkanovski will attempt to become the latest two-division world champion. It will also be a battle between the No.1 and No.2 pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC.

The co-main event will feature an interim featherweight title fight between Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett. Rodriguez (14-3 1 NC) last secured a TKO win over Brian Ortega in July. Emmett (18-2) is on a five-fight unbeaten streak. He’s coming off a split decision win over Calvin Kattar last June.
