Conor McGregor revealed just how dangerous his infamous shoulder strikes are.

The Irishman’s last win inside the Octagon came at UFC 246 in January 2020. After failing to reclaim the lightweight championship against Russian rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, McGregor bounced back in a big way, securing a 40-second knockout of UFC Hall of Fame inductee Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.

Mere seconds into the contest, the fighters clinched up in the center of the cage. Innovative as ever, Conor McGregor delivered a series of stiff shoulder strikes that tagged Cerrone with incredible force. A fan reminiscing about the unique maneuver received an unexpected response from McGregor himself who shed some light on the damage those blows did to his opponent.

“Listen to the sound of the breaks,” McGregor tweeted in response. “The first one breaks the nose, then the following two break the orbital socket.”

Cerrone’s quick defeat came in the middle of a six-fight losing streak that would eventually see the ‘Cowboy’ take off his 4oz gloves for the final time. Last month, the promotion announced that he would be the latest inductee to the UFC Hall of Fame class of 2023.

Will We See Conor McGregor Return to the Octagon in 2023?

Meanwhile, Conor McGregor is working towards a long-awaited return to the Octagon after dropping back-to-back bouts against Dustin Poirier in his last two appearances. Disaster struck in their July 2021 meeting when ‘The Notorious’ suffered a broken leg in the opening round. Fully recovered, McGregor recently completed filming for the 31st season of The Ultimate Fighter opposite high-octane lightweight ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler.

The two fighters are slated to scrap this fall once the latest season of TUF has completed its run on ESPN. Whether or not the fight actually happens this year remains to be seen as recent reports suggest Conor McGregor is yet to re-enter the USADA pool for a required six months of pre-fight testing.

Unless McGregor is able to secure some type of exemption, the earliest possible date for his highly anticipated return would be November.

UFC superstar Conor McGregor has congratulated his former rival and opponent, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, for his entry into the UFC Hall of Fame.

The Irishman appeared with others such as Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier in a UFC tribute video to Cerrone.

The announcement was made live on air last night at UFC Fight Night: Vera vs. Sandhagen in San Antonio, Texas.

Cowboy, who was in attendance, was surprised not only with the announcement, but he became emotional after he was surprised with his family members in attendance as well.

In the pre-recorded interview, Conor McGregor was delighted to share kind words towards the legendary Cowboy.

“He’s taken short notice, he’s never pulled out. He’s gone through the divisions also up and down.”

Conor McGregor fought Donald Cerrone back in January 2020

Cerrone was the first man to welcome Conor McGregor back into the UFC following a long layoff and a blockbuster event against Floyd Mayweather.

The bout took place at UFC 246 in January of 2020, when Conor McGregor cemented his reignited stardom with a flawless 40 second knockout over Cerrone.

Leading up to that fight, and moments afterwards, McGregor had nothing but positive words towards Cowboy, a switch that fans were not accustomed to.

While McGregor was on his rise to eternal popularity chasing the featherweight title, he and Cowboy had heated exchanges during press conferences.

The two UFC icons have now long buried the hatchet, and Cowboy has had a lot to soak in since the surprise announcement.

“Cowboy Cerrone is one of the best lightweights in UFC history,” UFC president Dana White said. “Cowboy consistently fought the best of the best for over a decade inside the Octagon and set a ton of records in the process. He was also a complete savage who would fight anyone at any time. He is a true legend, and it will be an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame as part of International Fight Week.”

Cerrone’s vicious fighting style alongside his highlight reel combos and willingness to step into the cage at a moment’s notice has earned his respect throughout the MMA community, so it is no surprise that he and McGregor settled their differences.

Donald Cerrone receives UFC Hall of Fame induction

Veteran former UFC lightweight title challenger and welterweight contender, Donald Cerrone is slated to receive his induction into the organization’s Hall of Fame this summer during an official ceremony during International Fight Week in July.

Cerrone, 39, a former undisputed lightweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in July of last year at UFC 276, suffering a second round guillotine choke submission loss to Jim Miller in the pair’s rematch.

Boasting a storied 36-17(2) professional record at the time of his retirement from active competition, Cerrone ended his tenure in the sport in the midst of a winless run in his seven most recent fights.

Donald Cerrone set to enter UFC Hall of Fame this summer

Earning an infamous 2020 fight with former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor, Colorado native, Cerrone managed to embark on a winning-spree against Mike Perry, Alexander Hernandez, and Al Iaquinta. The promotion confirmed Cerrone’s induction into the class this summer during the broadcast of UFC Fight Night San Antonio.

“Riding right into the Hall of Fame!” UFC tweeted. “@CowboyCerrone (Donald Cerrone) is officially joining the #UFCHoF induction class of 2023.”

Debuting in the UFC back in February 2011, Cerrone challenged for undisputed lightweight gold in a rematch against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night Orlando back in December 2015, suffering a first round TKO loss.

Over the course of his storied Octagon tenure at both the lightweight and welterweight classes, Donald Cerrone has landed wins over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, Melvin Guillard, Edson Barboza, Jim Miller, Patrick Cote, Matt Brown, and former promotional champions, Benson Henderson, Eddie Alvarez, and Charles Oliveira to name a few.

Cerrone will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer during an official ceremony – joining sport icon and former undisputed middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, who received his official induction during the broadcast of UFC 286 last weekend in London, England.

Cormier Opposes Cerrone’s Possible UFC Return Following PED Admission

Daniel Cormier recently pushed back against Donald Cerrone’s plans for a UFC comeback following his revelation of using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) during his retirement.

Earlier this week, “Cowboy”, who retired from the UFC in July 2022, revealed plans to come out of retirement with an ambitious goal—reaching the achievement of 50 total bouts under the Zuffa banner. The 41-year-old fan favorite has racked up 38 UFC fights, placing him third in the promotion’s history—excluding the 10 more bouts he logged in the WEC.

Cerrone also disclosed that he’s been on Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) and other PEDs throughout his time away from the Octagon. Now, he’s working to flush these substances out of his system, aiming to rejoin the drug-testing pool and make his return for two more fights.

However, Cormier isn’t on board with Cerrone’s plan to return to active competition after openly admitting to using steroids during his hiatus. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, the former two-division UFC champion voiced his firm disapproval, stating that “Cowboy” actions could set a troubling precedent.

“DC” argued that it might inspire other fighters to temporarily withdraw from testing protocols, exploit their time off, and return with an unfair advantage.

“For years now, he’s been openly using steroids. I don’t quite know what it is, but he’s not been clean. And even if he can come back, take tests, and pass those tests, for him to get back, he has to do all of those things and all those enhancers to allow him to feel like he can compete at that level again.

So he would test clean, but isn’t that just a loophole? Isn’t it just a loophole like with the guys, when they get hurt, they get out of the testing pool? They recover from the injury; then they re-enter the testing pool.”

– DC on Cowboy Cerrone wanting to fight again

Cerrone last fought at UFC 276, where he suffered a submission loss to Jim Miller. Despite this setback, his career is impressive, featuring 18 post-fight bonuses—the most in UFC history, a record he shares with Charles Oliveira. He is tied for the second-most wins in UFC history with 23, alongside Andrei Arlovski, and holds 16 finishes, second only to Miller.

In recognition of his legendary career, Cerrone was inducted into the modern wing of the UFC Hall of Fame in March 2023.
