It’s likely that Conor McGregor’s return opponent to the UFC will be Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

McGregor has noted that he is set to return to fighting action in January of 2020. While he was reluctant to name his opponent, initial reports suggest that Cerrone is the frontrunner to fight the Irishman. Even UFC president Dana White confirmed that is, in fact, the fight he is working on.

Now, McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar, has provided an update on the matter. Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Attar revealed that talks for McGregor vs. Cerrone are “progressing.”

“I would say that talks have been progressing,” Attar said. “We’ve met them, we’re in close communication with them. I would hope that an announcement could happen in the coming weeks, but at the end of the day, it’s still a work in progress.”

McGregor has made some serious money throughout his combat sports career. He never has to take another fight again in his life after all of his earnings. However, Attar notes that “Notorious” stays active simply because he still has a world champion’s hunger in him.

“He never has to fight one fight more in his life,” Attar said. “At the end of the day, that’s the thing people forgot about him; he actually is a competitor. He dares to do things differently.

“I don’t see him slowing down,” he said. “I think that fighting once a year for the last couple of years, it’s almost like it’s grown his appetite to stay active. In any sport, the more reps you take, the better you get. He’s no stranger to becoming a world champion multiple times over. He knows what it takes.”

What do you think about a matchup between McGregor and Cerrone? Who are you picking to win if the fight goes down?

Despite rumors about McGregor having issues with his coaching staff, the Irishman’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, confirmed to MMA Junkie that he and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh will be in McGregor’s corner.

“Yup, yup, yup – yeah definitely, yeah,” Roddy said.

Initial reports suggest that McGregor could fight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January. During a recent press tour in Russia, McGregor announced his return date is set for January 18, however, the UFC has not officially confirmed this.

McGregor would not confirm who his opponent was, but UFC president Dana White has since admitted that the promotion is working on a fight between McGregor and Cerrone. In regards to a fight between McGregor and “Cowboy,” Roddy offered his take.

“If it is ‘Cowboy,’ it would be an exciting fight, yeah,” Roddy said. “I said this a couple of months ago: ‘Cowboy’ and Conor is a great fight for the fans.

“Two guys that are exciting strikers – although ‘Cowboy’ is phenomenal on the ground, as well, but I think if it was a fight between them, it would be a striking battle, and I think it would be one for the fans, so if it is that, it’ll be an exciting one.”

It looks like the UFC truly is targeting a fight between Conor McGregor and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in early January. McGregor announced during his Russia tour that he is set to return on January 18 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, McGregor did not announce his opponent, claiming he already knows who it is, but noted if he did reveal it, the UFC would “flip” it. Soon after, reports surfaced indicating Cerrone was the frontrunner for the fight, leading to “Cowboy” teasing a fight announcement coming soon on social media.

Now, speaking to TMZ Sports, UFC president Dana White has confirmed the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is, in fact, targeting McGregor vs. Cerrone for January, but it’s far from a done deal, and could still possibly fall through.

“We have nothing done, nothing is even close to being done,” White said. “So, I hate to even talk about this stuff, say it, because it might not happen, it might happen, but we’re looking at Cowboy. Number three versus number five, January 18 at the T-Mobile in Las Vegas.”

McGregor hasn’t fought since his October 2018 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Irishman wanted an immediate rematch, but will undoubtedly have to earn his way back into the 155-pound title picture. A win over Cerrone would be a big step in the right direction.

“I think it’s going to happen this time. I really do. Conor’s really serious about making a comeback,” Cerrone said. “I think Conor’s side and our team have reached out. We’re trying to figure it out, man. It’s looking good though.”

When asked if he has a message for McGregor ahead of the rumored fight, Cerrone simply said, “Sign the damn deal, man. Let’s get this done.” McGregor hasn’t fought since October of last year. He was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the fourth round via neck crank.

As for Cerrone, he’s coming off a knockout loss to Justin Gaethje, another man who wants a fight with the Irishman. A fight between Cerrone and McGregor was rumored for earlier this year as well, but it never came to fruition. Hopefully, things pan out this time around.

The wait may nearly be over. This week Conor McGregor announced that his UFC return has been confirmed for January 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada next year. Although the UFC claims no fight has been finalized as of this writing, initial reports suggest Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is the front-runner to fight “Mystic Mac” in January.

This doesn’t sit well with Justin Gaethje, who has been campaigning for a fight with McGregor for several weeks now. Gaethje took to Twitter to blast McGregor for seemingly accepting a fight with Cerrone – a man Gaethje just finished – instead of himself.

“First a bantamweight now the man I defeated last. I can fight in January @TheNotoriousMMA Let’s show the world the little coward you are. I won’t take your neck when you give it to me and the fetal position is not an option.”

McGregor did not confirm who his opponent was upon the announcement of his return, claiming the UFC would “flip” it if he did. However, he did note that he doesn’t care who his opponent is come January, he simply wants to get back to being active again.

“Ask the UFC who the opponent is, because I do not give a f— who the opponent is,” McGregor said.

“The people who believe in me deserve better. It is an insult to the people that believe in me that I am not fully committed. So now I am coming back and I’m fully committed. And I am eager to come back and show the best of myself for my fans around the world.”

What do you make of Gaethje’s comments towards McGregor? Do you think Cerrone will be McGregor’s opponent come January?
