The fight was McGregor’s first since October of 2018. He did not receive a medical suspension seeing as he was not hit once. You can check out the full UFC 246 medical suspensions below, courtesy of MMA Fighting.

Donald Cerrone couldn’t get the job done against Conor McGregor at UFC 246 last night (Sat. January 18, 2020).

McGregor only needed 40 seconds to take out “Cowboy” after some nasty shoulder shots, a head-kick, and ground-and-pound. With the loss, the narrative that Cerrone can’t win the big fight continues. There was a lot of criticism thrown at “Cowboy” for his performance last night, but it was comments from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that really got people’s attention.

Speaking on the post-fight show on ESPN+, Smith had some harsh words for the longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I’m quite disgusted,” Smith said. “Let me be very, very clear: I’m honored to be up here with you guys. I’m a spectator watching the sport. I expected to see more than 40 seconds. I predicted McGregor was going to win this fight inside of two rounds. I thought he would take him out.

“Here’s the deal: 15 seconds in, ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone was done. He got hit with those shoulders in the clinch, and he was done. It look like he gave up. It was just an atrocious performance on his part.”

Smith then questioned if Cerrone was even prepared to fight McGregor in what was certainly the biggest fight of his career.

“You know the difference between a fighter that’s calm, cool, collected, and ready for the pressure, and it’s out-weighed by somebody that’s clearly in over their head? When you look at ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, that was not a guy that was prepared to fight tonight. We knew Conor was going to be prepared,” Smith said.

“We knew Conor was going to be ready. We wondered whether or not he would take him out early. Obviously as the fight goes on, ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is the bigger, stronger guy – supposedly. For him to be hurt in 15 seconds, get away from the clinch, and still just let Conor right back at him? Come on. You’re smarter than that, except for tonight.”

What do you think about Smith’s criticism of Cerrone?

Last night (Sat. January 18, 2020) Conor McGregor made his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon in the UFC 246 pay-per-view (PPV) main event against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

While a lot of people picked McGregor to win, nobody could’ve predicted how dominant his victory would be. McGregor came right out the gate and unloaded his left hand, which Cerrone ducked, but ran right into McGregor’s knee. After that, Cerrone clinched up with McGregor, who proceeded to nail “Cowboy” with several shoulder shots, one of them busting open his nose.

After they separated from the clinch, Cerrone had a head-kick blocked, before eating one from McGregor that dropped him to the canvas. McGregor swarmed on top for some nasty ground-and-pound, forcing the referee to step in and call the action off after only just 40 seconds. In his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Cerrone noted he and his team had a great game plan for McGregor, but never got to even start it. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“Oh man, he got me with his elbows right away and distorted the s*it out of me and then head-kicked me. What a great game plan he had, man it was awesome,” Cerrone said.

Rogan then asked Cerrone how much damage the shoulder shots did, to which Cerrone admitted they threw him completely off guard.

“100 percent, I’d never seen anything like that,” Cerrone said. “They threw me way off-guard, he busted my nose, it started bleeding, then he stepped back and head-kicked me. I was like, ‘Oh man, this is happening this fast? I got my ass whipped early.’

“I love this sport, I’m a keep fighting. I don’t care, it’s just what I love, man. I got my family right here, I’m okay. Thank you everyone for supporting me over the years, I love it, I don’t know what else to say.”

What do you think of Cerrone’s reaction to his quick loss to McGregor?

Last night (Sat. January 18, 2020) UFC 246 went down on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the main event of the night, Conor McGregor made his highly-anticipated return to Octagon action. McGregor hadn’t fought since October of 2018 when he was submitted by UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Irishman took on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at welterweight. Cerrone entered the bout on a two-fight losing streak to the lightweight elite of Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson.

During the fight, McGregor missed on a wild left hand after Cerrone ducked. However, Cerrone ducked right into a knee, and proceeded to eat multiple stiff shoulder shots that wobbled Cerrone. After backing up, McGregor hit Cerrone with a huge head kick that dropped “Cowboy” who was finished on the canvas via ground-and-pound. The finish came in just 40 seconds.

UFC 246 will go down tonight (Sat. January 18, 2020) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans will witness the return of former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor, as he takes on longtime fan-favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

It’s a massive bout to kick off the new decade, especially since it features the UFC’s biggest star of all time. We here at LowKickMMA have compiled our UFC 246 staff predictions for the McGregor vs. Diaz main event. Check them out below.

UFC 246 Staff Predictions

Jon Fuentes:

I think people are a bit premature in giving McGregor the overall striking advantage. While McGregor may be the best boxer in this fight, Cerrone is a very high-level kickboxer who has some of the most dynamic kicks in the game. One shot to the body or head from Cerrone’s shin and that’s a wrap.

Not to mention Cerrone likely has the edge if the fight goes to the ground in terms of wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Cerrone may be a slow starter, but I have a feeling he’s going to truly show up the best version of himself tonight. I got Cerrone stopping McGregor in the mid-to-late rounds. (Prediction: Donald Cerrone)

Abhinav Kini:

It seems like many are expecting a slightly even striking contest. I don’t. Conor McGregor’s striking will be too much for Donald Cerrone and I’m forecasting an early first-round knockout similar to the Justin Gaethje result. The likely reluctance of “Cowboy” to use his wrestling will only make it more likely. (Prediction: Conor McGregor)

Jordan Ellis

Conor McGregor, despite being somewhat rusty, should have too much for Donald Cerrone. The American is on a two-fight skid and is known as a notoriously slow starter. In contrast, the Irishman is the fastest starter in the game, and this will be the difference. McGregor round one KO/TKO. (Prediction: Conor McGregor)

Ian Shutts

Conor McGregor is a notoriously fast starter, while “Cowboy” tends to be a bit of a slow starter. Not to mention Cerrone has difficulty with left-hand fighters, and McGregor has one of the most deadly left hands in the game. I got McGregor taking this one with a second-round TKO. (Prediction: Conor McGregor)

Timmy Moran:

Expect the longer and bigger Cerrone to temporarily weather the storm in round one against McGregor. However, the lethal left hand of McGregor will have landed enough to keep the contest from going into championship rounds. I got McGregor by TKO in the second round. (Prediction: Conor McGregor)
