Carina Damm Is Now a Two-Time Drug-Test Loser, Catches Six-Month Suspension Over Fake Urine

(Carina Damm: Continuing to break down boundaries for female fighters. Photo via Folha Vitoria)

Well this is a damn shame. Last month, we celebrated the five-year anniversary of Carina Damm becoming the first female MMA fighter to test positive for steroids. And now, according to a report broken by MMARising.com, Damm has become the first female MMA fighter to submit fake urine during a pre-fight drug test, following in the footsteps of fake-piss pioneers Kevin Randleman and Thiago Silva. Read on for the details:

Carina “Barbie” Damm has been fined and suspended for six months by the Ohio Athletic Commission for submitting an invalid urine sample prior to her recent fight in the state. Damm dropped a Unanimous Decision to Jessica “Evil” Eye at NAAFS: “Fight Night In The Flats 9” on June 1st in Cleveland.

OAC Executive Director Bernie Profato discussed the suspension with MMARising.com today. During pre-fight testing, Damm submitted a sample that was determined to be a substance other than urine. She has incurred a $550 fine in addition to the suspension, but is able to appeal the ruling…

During an intermission at the NAAFS event, just prior to the two title fights and main event bout between Eye and Damm, all six remaining fighters on the card were required to submit to pre-fight drug testing. Each sample came back clean for banned substances, but there were irregularities with Damm’s. The lab conducted a second test on the sample and verified that it was in fact not urine.

“For the chain of command here, we only have one woman inspector,” Profato told MMARising.com. “We really need to get women to go in there [to monitor the urine test], so we had someone who was not an employee of the state but was an unbiased person who had worked for another promotional company. Her statement to me for the chain of custody was that they went in there and she heard [Damm urinating] into the toilet, which didn’t make any sense, but Damm took the [filled] cup and put it on the counter.

“That person then got the cup, and our doctor was waiting right outside the door and she handed it to the doctor,” Profato added. “He sealed it, labelled it and took it over to me. I took it to the lab and released it to them. It was sent to the laboratory for testing. There has to be certain elements in [the sample] in order for it to be considered urine and those elements were not in it. So what we suspended her for is for failing to provide a urine or blood sample. Even the doctor, when he first handed the sample to me, he said, ‘I’m not a lab person, but two things here. One, this is kind of clear, and two, it’s cold!’”

Under OAC law, any fighter who fails a drug test must then pay for the costs of the testing. Damm was suspended for violating Rule 3773-1-12 (F) of the OAC Administrative Codes and incurred a base fine of $300. She will be required to pay an additional $250 to cover the costs of both the first and second lab tests on the sample that she provided.

“The suspension that we’ve given her initially is for six months,” Profato explains. “We sent her a certified letter and she can appeal. We tentatively have a hearing set up for her on August 13th at 10:00 A.M. She can call or contact us if she would like to have the hearing…

Damm returned to Brazil and fought two weeks after her loss to Eye. She defeated Jessica Suelen by first-round TKO on June 15th. Damm is scheduled to face Kalindra Faria in a rematch in the opening round of the MMA Super Heroes women’s flyweight grand prix on July 13th. Promotions in Brazil are not obligated to honour Damm’s OAC suspension, but she will be unable to compete in any ABC member state until her suspension has been lifted or expires.

Damm joins Josh Barnett, Kimo Leopoldo, and Stephan Bonnar in the short list of MMA fighters who have blown drug tests on more than one occasion, so at least she’s in good company. By the way, props to NAAFS for springing drug tests on its fighters during an intermission at the event; I bet Carina was shitting a brick as she scooped up toilet water to use as her “urine sample.” Now if you’ll exucse me, I have a timeline to update…

Is This Real Life?: Alistair Overeem’s ‘UFC 156? Drug Test Comes Back With *Below* Average Testosterone Levels

(You think Antonio Silva‘s training methods are too tough, Alistair? Just wait until Jillian Michaels gets ahold of you. Photo via Getty Images.)

Well, this would be a hell of a lot more triumphant news had Alistair Overeem not been tenderized like a cheap cut of (horse) steak at UFC 156, but you’ll be happy to know that Overeem, along with all of the 22 fighters who competed on the card, passed their post-fight drug tests with flying colors. Here’s where things get weird; Overeem’s test did come back with abnormal results, just not the kind you’d expect. And no, it wasn’t for Mary Jane. MMAJunkie passed along the results:

But with his blood test form his UFC 156 fight, his testosterone total level actually fell below the normal range of 250-1,100 nano grams per deciliter (ng/dL). Overeem’s total testosterone came in at 179 from the test, which was administered the morning after the fight at 8:25 a.m. on Feb. 3.

All other levels within the blood test came back within the normal reference range.

Wait, Overeem’s testosterone level was below normal?! I think this occasion calls for a very special head-splosion clip:

While you wouldn’t exactly need to 20/20 vision to notice the difference between UFC 146 Ubereem and UFC 156 Ubereem, the fact that Overeem’s testosterone level was so far below the normal range has to leave you scratching your head a little here. Then again, Overeem has been tested seven times in the past nine months, so perhaps he was simply cycling erring on the side of caution heading into this fight. Not that any amount of testosterone will improve your ability to take a punch, but let’s just save that discussion for the aftermath of a fight that Overeem didn’t all but take for granted heading in.

In either case, Overeem better be able to get his levels in order (and perhaps switch training camps. Sorry, Blackzilians) by the time he fights Junior Dos Santos at UFC 160 in May, or the results or going to look eerily similar to his last performance.

[VIDEO] Rampage Jackson, Eddie Alvarez, + More React to Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman’s Positive UFC 153 Tests

(If this man does not strike you as the kind of person who spends most of his free time getting stoned, playing Xbox, and waxing poetic about the flaws of Jiu-Jitsu, then we don’t know who does.)

When we first heard word that Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman failed their UFC 153 drug tests — for Drostanolone and Marijuana respectively — we couldn’t help but reflect on the timeless words of George W. Bush when he stated, “Fool me once…..shame on………..shame on you. Fool me, I can’t get fooled again.” Unfortunately for Bonnar and Herman, they failed to fool the piss test even once while in the UFC (at least to our knowledge) and have felt the unforgiving wrath of the Interwebs as a result of their insolence. Hearts were broken. Tears were shed. Butts were hurt.

And in an effort to gauge their fellow fighters feelings on the issue, FightHubTv recently interviewed such fighters as Travis Browne, Eddie Alvarez, and Tyrone Spong to get some perspective on the issue. Also, Rampage Jackson threw in his two cents and actually managed to do so without turning the interview into another “Dear Diary” entry aimed at the UFC. Good for him.

Video after the jump.

Video below.

Go figure, the general sentiment seems to be that penalizing a fighter for smoking marijuana is overkill. That being said, no one is exactly quick to forgive a so-called professional like Herman who has tested positive for marijuana twice now in just a four fight UFC career.

When asked on the issue of Mary J, Tyrone Spong can only nonchalantly remind us that “I’m from Amsterdam,” with a smile. Point taken, Tyrone. Eddie Alvarez, on the other hand, couldn’t give a fuck if your were huffing cat piss and lighting off fire crackers in your ass before you fought him, because it probably wouldn’t improve your chances anyway.

Although the general public reaction to Bonnar’s second failed test has been that he was simply going honey badger for his final UFC fight, you have to imagine that “The American Psycho” suffered some undisclosed injury in training that forced him to hit the juice. Why else would he cheapen the value of the final fight of his career, especially when he asked for such a big fight to begin with? If it turns out that Bonnar was just juicing for the hell of it, it will really call into question what exactly he was thinking heading into UFC 153.

Look at me, trying to to understand the mind of this man. It’s like asking your dog why he chases his own tail. Or why your favorite prostitute will never say “I love you” back.

CSAC Says There Was More Than Ice Water Flowing Through Cavalcante’s Veins During His Last Bout

Defense exhibit I: You can clearly see Feijao’s teammate slipping him something behind his back. Don’t waste your time, Feijao, it’s been tried before. (Photo: MMAJunkie.com)

If Dana White has been hexed with an “Injury Curse“, surely someone has placed a “Banned Substance Pox” on poor Scott Coker. After losing two stars in Cyborg Santos and Muhammed Lawal to failed drug tests earlier this year, he’ll now likely have to soldier on without the services of former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

As first tweeted by Gabriel Montoya and reported by MMAFighting.com [thanks for doing the heavy lifting, guys], the California State Athletic Commission has suspended ‘Feijao’ for one year and fined him $2,500 after testing positive for a banned substance following his quick destruction of Mike Kyle last month at “Strikeforce: Barnett vs Cormier”. ‘Feijao’ stunned Kyle with a big knee in the opening moments of the bout then swarmed him with ground and pound before pulling guard, sinking in a guillotine choke, and drawing the tap—all in a cool 33 seconds.

CSAC’s George Dodd has yet to reveal which banned substance Cavalcante was popped for, but his manager, Ed Soares, isn’t buying it…

“I believe in his innocence, and we’re fighting it. We stand behind him. There’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t make sense.”

Soares has already replied to the commission and plans to appeal the suspension and fine. For now, any plans for his charge to face Gegard Mousasi for the title will have to be put on hold.

While we do enjoy jumping the gun and crucifying folks before all of the facts come in, let’s keep in mind that the terms “banned substance” and “Performing Enhancing Drug” are not synonymous. The failed test could simply mean that Cavalcante ordered some herbal medicine from HomeRemedies.209.biz. We’ll keep you posted.

Oh Snap! Dr. Johnny Benjamin Claims Sonnen’s Hypogonadism is the Result of Past Steroid Use

(If you’ve ever seen the kind of bedbugs that Oakland produces, then you’d be less inclined to call Chael a cheater is all we’re saying.)

Well, well, well. As if it wasn’t bad enough that a mild-mannered, unassuming guy like Chael Sonnen lost *his* UFC middleweight championship due to a misunderstanding of the rules back at UFC 117, and shortly thereafter found himself thrust into the center of an elaborate conspiracy (that’s right, conspiracy) that attempted to invalidate the four and a half round ass whooping he laid out on Anderson Silva, now he has this to deal with this. The poor guy.

You see, Potato Nation, when you become the best at something, be it sports, politics, or whatever else, the common folk can’t help but become jealous of your accomplishments, to the point that they will go out of their way to try and discredit what you have worked so hard to achieve. Such was the case for Herman Cain, and now it appears that none other than HH Chael Sonnen has found himself in the public’s crosshairs as well. As we all know, Sonnen is the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, bar none, and because of this, everyone with a University of Phoenix Health Care degree is trying to use their “science” to tear him down. Even though he was granted a therapeutic use exemption to help him deal with his inability to produce testosterone, a real, crippling disease that many MMA fighters face, haters are still coming out of the woodwork to try and soil the name of a man who literally defines “upstanding citizen” with his every action.

Today’s mountebank is none other than MMAJunkies go-to medicine man, Dr. Johnny Benjamin, who boldly claimed that the only reason Sonnen’s body cannot produce the testosterone it should is due to the fact that he definitely used steroids in the past. Here’s what he told BloodyElbow:

Was Chael Sonnen a big time collegiate wrestler? Yes he was. I’m going to opine and say to you, there’s no way in the world you get to the level of collegiate wrestling that Chael Sonnen was at, with hypogonadism. Let me explain to you why. Hypogonadism means that the testes did not produce enough testosterone for one to normally mature. He wasn’t on TRT as a teenager. He became this big, muscled up monster and NCAA wrestler with hypogonadism? Hell no.

Hypogonadism means that the testes did not produce enough testosterone for one to normally mature. He wasn’t on TRT as a teenager. He became this big, muscled up monster and NCAA wrestler with hypogonadism? Hell no.

The truth of the matter is, you could never get to that level, because you’re not going to have the muscle mass and strength to get you there. They’re going to run you over. Your body will not allow you to develop enough muscle and strength to compete at your size. If he has hypogonadism, it’s from one thing, and one thing only, because he treated himself with steroids in the past, and wrecked his testes. That’s it.

We may be out of line here, “Dr.” Benjamin, but how dare you. To think that a straight-laced guy like Chael would even consider taking advantage of the system is not only shocking, but could be considered slander as well.

Obviously we’re only kidding here, as Benjamin’s claims, though lacking actual proof, aren’t exactly outside the realm of possibility when dealing with a habitual line stepper such as Sonnen. But what does that mean for guys like Dan Henderson, Frank Mir, and the other MMA fighters that have applied for TRT exemption? All of them couldn’t have used roids in the past, right? Oh how the plot thickens.

And when asked about the possibility of the UFC drug testing its own athletes, as Dana White recently stated was on the horizon for the organization, Dr. Benjamin stated that it could only lead to more corruption within the drug testing circuit:

It’s a conflict of interest. If you’re going to look like you’re a fair organization that’s trying to create a level playing field for everyone, then you can’t do it yourself. The problem is, our big guys never test positive, but your fringe guys do, and get exposed.

If you know something that may wreck the biggest name in your sport, and you’re the only one that knows, will you expose it? If the guys who are the very biggest draws test positive, would you report it? It’s like if a tree falls in the woods, did it make a noise. It’s a real gut check at that point. You’re going to ruin a whole card if your main event guy tests positive? You can’t put yourself in that position. You have to let somebody else do it, and if a test is positive, it’s positive. You never touched it. You’ve got nothing to do with it. You’re not protecting or shielding anyone.

Dr. Benjamin definitely makes another good point here, and one that I hadn’t really considered when thinking over this issue. Imagine if Alistair Overeem’s horsepiss was caught by the UFC and the UFC alone. Do you think that they’d cost themselves one of the biggest cards/matchups of the year due to a high T/E ratio? Methinks not.

But what say you, Potato Nation?
