After making plenty of noise and turning more than a few heads in Bellator’s lightweight division, Pat Curran will now set his sights on the featherweight class.

Bellator officials Friday announced Curran, its Season 2 lightweight tournament champion, will cut to 145 pounds with a placement in the promotion’s upcoming featherweight tournament, part of its “Summer Series” slate of events.

Curran’s featherweight debut with the promotion will come at Bellator 46 on June 25 in Hollywood, Fla., which will serve as the opening round of the featherweight tourney. The semifinals are slated for Bellator 47 and the tournament finals for Bellator 48 – setting up the next challenger for Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren.

Josh ShockleyIt’s been a long time coming for Josh Shockley‘s debut with Bellator. On Friday, his past tough luck paid off.

Shockley (6-0-1), an Indiana-based lightweight scheduled for a prelim fight at Bellator 36 in Shreveport, La., on Saturday, made weight for his bout against Kalvin Hackney without issue. Then things got weird.

Ferrid Kheder, booked to face Toby Imada as part of Bellator’s lightweight tournament quarterfinals, was so far off weight he didn’t even bother trying, sources told MMA Fighting. And since there was just one lightweight bout on the card’s prelims, Shockley was the beneficiary of some good news, for a change – a jump from the unaired prelims to a televised spot in the eight-man tournament.

Ben AskrenUnbeaten Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren has his next test, and it will be against his most seasoned opponent yet.

Askren, who won the promotion’s Season 2 welterweight tournament to earn a date with champ Lyman Good, whom he beat to win the title in October, will face UFC veteran Nick Thompson at Bellator 40 in April. Bellator made the fight official on Wednesday – though it will be a non-title fight.

Askren (7-0), a 2008 Olympic wrestler and two-time NCAA Division I national champion at the University of Missouri, won his first four MMA bouts with first-round stoppages. But his wins over Ryan Thomas at Bellator 19, Hornbuckle and Good have all been decisions – using his superior wrestling to dominate on the ground.
