In an exclusive interview with MMA News, Colby Covington laughed off 170-pound champion Kamaru Usman’s desire to meet pound-for-pound boxing king Canelo Alvarez inside the ring.

Covington has challenged Usman twice inside the Octagon. In their first meeting at UFC 245 in 2019, “Chaos” gave the champ the toughest test to his reign. Heading into the fifth and final round, most had the fight scored at 2-2. With all to play for, it was Usman who edged ahead and secured a final-frame TKO victory.

After defending his belt once against Gilbert Burns and twice opposite Jorge Masvidal, “The Nigerian Nightmare” faced the threat of Covington again at UFC 268 earlier this month.

Despite dropping “Chaos” in the early rounds and looking like he was facing an easier ride than in the pair’s first clash, Usman lost his firm grip on the headlining bout and allowed his arch-rival back into the contest. But despite rocking the champ inside Madison Square Garden, Covington fell short on the judges’ scorecards.

Covington: Usman vs. Canelo Is The “Funniest Thing I Ever Heard”

Having cleared out many of the top contenders in the division and already lapped and beaten Covington and Masvidal for a second time, many are wondering what’s next for Usman. Ahead of his second victory over the #1-ranked contender, the champ had pitched the idea of a crossover showdown between the UFC’s pound-for-pound king, himself, and boxing’s P4P best, Canelo Alvarez.

Similar to Usman’s 170-pound dominance in the UFC, Canelo has been brushing past opponent after opponent inside the squared circle. The 57-1-2 professional has won multiple world championships across four weight classes from middleweight to light heavyweight. In his latest outing, a TKO win over Caleb Plant on the same night as Usman vs. Covington 2, the Mexican became the first undisputed champion at super middleweight in history.

Speaking to MMA News’ James Lynch, Colby Covington discussed the idea of Canelo and Usman facing off inside the ring. With Canelo’s credentials in mind, and his own experience facing Usman, the former interim titleholder believes talk of “The Nigerian Nightmare” posing any threat to the 31-year-old is laughable. “Chaos” also suggested the welterweight champ’s pursuit of money fights shows he’s nearing retirement from MMA.

“It’s probably the funniest thing I ever heard in my life. I mean, man, that’s just sad, man. That’s not even believable. Like, come on, man. Let’s talk about things in the realm of possibility. You’re acting like a little kid. He’s just trying to get paid. I mean, the bottom line: He doesn’t want to fight tough fights anymore, man. He wants to get this big-money fight and just walk off in the sunset. He doesn’t want it anymore. He doesn’t want it like want it, and that why you’re probably gonna see that guy leave the sport within the next year, and I’m still gonna be here. I’m getting better. I haven’t even hit my prime, man. So when I hit my prime, 34, 35 years old, man, look out, James. These guys are all in trouble,” Covington told MMA News.

With Dana White’s comments, in which he emphatically shut down the idea of Usman venturing over to boxing to challenge Canelo, it seems unlikely we’ll be seeing the Nigerian and the Mexican trading leather anytime soon. Nevertheless, the champ isn’t giving up hope, and recently reiterated his desire to make his boxing debut against Canelo.

Do you agree with Colby Covington’s take on a potential Usman vs. Canelo boxing matchup?

Fiziev Knows He Has To Beat Riddell To Secure A Good New Contract

UFC lightweight Rafael Fiziev knows his upcoming fight with Brad Riddell is crucial in securing a bumper new contract in 2022.

Brad Riddell, Rafael Fiziev

UFC lightweight Rafael Fiziev knows his upcoming fight with Brad Riddell is crucial in securing a bumper new contract in 2022.

Fiziev, who currently sits at #14 in the 155-pound rankings, is currently on a four-fight winning streak in MMA’s leading promotion. Since a debut spinning back kick loss to Magomed Mustafaev in 2019, the Kazakhstani-born Kyrgyzstani has outpointed Alex White and Marc Diakiese, and brutally knocked out former hot prospect Renato Moicano. Most recently, “Ataman” emerged victorious over veteran Bobby Green in a Fight of the Night clash at UFC 265.

Fiziev will look to extend his streak to five when he returns to action for the second time this year. In the UFC Vegas 44 co-main event, he’ll face #12-ranked lightweight Brad Riddell. The New Zealander holds an unbeaten 4-0 UFC record. In his last outing, he overcame Drew Dober at UFC 263. He also boasts a triumph over Mustafaev, the only man to have defeated Fiziev.

In an exclusive interview with MMA News, Fiziev revealed that his upcoming contest with “Quake” is the penultimate bout on his current four-fight UFC deal. With that in mind, and the usual scenario of re-negotiating with the promotion ahead of the final fight, the 28-year-old is aware of what’s at stake come December 4.

“For sure (it’s a big fight). Because I need to win this fight if I want like, if I want a good contract, a good next contract, and go up, take some top-10 (opponents) and start to be (on) the road to the belt, I need to win this fight, for sure. This is (a) big fight for my career.”

Fiziev Didn’t Want To Fight “Friend” Riddell

Not only will Fiziev’s clash with Riddell represent a chance for him to move a step closer to the top 10, but it will also be a rare occurrence where two friends agree to trade blows inside the Octagon. Both men have trained at Tiger Muay Thai, a training facility located in Phuket, Thailand.

Fiziev told MMA News that he’d certainly rather not be fighting a friend at UFC Vegas 44, but at the end of the day, he needs to make money. He sees his contest with Riddell as a case of two friends lending each other a hand in doing so.

“I don’t want (to) fight with my friends. This is not good. This is, for sure, this is not good feel(ing) when you go fight with friends. But UFC wanted, UFC asked. UFC tried to make this fight a second time and sometimes we can’t say no. If I say no, maybe I not fight this year. If Brad says no, same; he not fight this year. But we need to fight. We need to make money because it’s work, it’s a business. This is what it is. He help me to make money, I help him to make money. After fight, we’re still friends.”

Fiziev also revealed that he agreed to fight Riddell over the phone. The 28-year-old said the New Zealander called him to discuss the UFC’s desire to match them up against each other.

“Yeah (I’ve spoken to Riddell). It’s a good story because he called me, and I very respect him when he call me. I respect his choice (to call), you know. He called me and he said, ‘Bro, UFC want to make a fight, me and you.’ And we talked a little bit. I talked with him first, and we say like, ‘Okay, let’s make it because we need to fight. You need to fight, I need to fight, let’s make it, you know, why not?’ We talked together, you know. And after, I called to my manager and said, ‘Hey, we’ve already talked, we’ll fight.'”

UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington has slammed Jon Jones for his recent arrest, suggesting the former light heavyweight champion should never fight in the UFC again.

Jones, who vacated the 205-pound gold last February in order to pursue a move up to heavyweight, found himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons yet again in September. Just hours after his 2013 fight with Alexander Gustafsson was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame’s Fight Wing, “Bones” was arrested in Las Vegas.

Jones was charged with battery domestic violence and injuring and tampering with a vehicle. The incident was made even more troubling when the initial call to the police was released and details of Jones’ altercation with his fiancé came out.

Covington Comments On “Despicable” Jones

Jones’ arrest was the latest of a string of run-ins with the law in recent years. He was involved in a hit-and-run accident involving a pregnant woman in 2015, which led to Jones vacating the light heavyweight championship. He was also involved in a DWI case last year in which he reached a plea deal. He also took a plea deal in a 2016 drag racing case.

While Jones has vowed to fix his ways and recently provided an update on his ongoing journey to sobriety, many of his UFC peers are doubtful of his ability to change, including former interim welterweight champ Colby Covington. During an interview with MMA News’ James Lynch, “Chaos” suggested Jones will continue to partake in criminal activities.

“Oh, my gosh, man. I’m not surprised. I mean, definitely not surprised. That guy’s gonna continue to do felon-type stuff, criminal-type activities. That guy’s a piece of shit, man. He’s a dirtbag. I mean, beating your wife? And she’s so manipulated and so messed up emotionally in the head from what he’s done to her over the years, you can tell she just has trauma so she doesn’t want to rat him out. He used to bring home big money for her. So of course, she wants to keep the gravy train going. She doesn’t want anything to ruin their relationship. So I get where she’s coming from and why it’s happening, but man, that’s sad, James.”

Discussing the latest incident, which he described as “despicable,” Covington told MMA News that Jones should never be allowed to professionally fight again.

“I mean, that’s bad. That’s real bad. You put your hands on a woman, you left her with marks and blood, and ugh, man. It’s despicable. And it’s sad that he even has a job, but I think the UFC should just milk out his career and not ever let him fight again. Because that guy shouldn’t be fighting. He doesn’t deserve to be in a cage. And we don’t want to see him lose any more brain cells, because he’s already lost it. He’s completely lost it in his head, and fighting again is just gonna make him get worse.”

Undefeated UFC welterweight Sean Brady is targeting a submission finish against contender Michael Chiesa at UFC Vegas 43 this weekend.

Brady, who has built an unblemished 14-0 professional record that includes seven finishes, is set to face his toughest test to date when he enters the Octagon with the #6-ranked Chiesa inside the UFC Apex on Saturday. The 28-year-old hasn’t been in action since a submission victory over Jake Matthews at UFC 259 earlier this year.

Having surged into the rankings after just four outings in the promotion, the Philadelphia native will look to take a huge leap towards the 170-pound top five with an impressive display against “Maverick.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWVtuB3rKxD/

Brady Targets A Statement Finish Against A Top Contender

Brady was initially scheduled to face former interim lightweight title challenger Kevin Lee on two separate occasions in 2021. Their July clash was postponed after “The Motown Phenom” suffered an injury. The second time around, the issue was on Brady’s side. He was forced to withdraw from their August booking after contracting a staph infection.

With Lee instead facing and losing to Daniel Rodriguez, Brady is content with moving on from the cursed matchup, and now firmly has his sights set on a top-10 contender. In an interview with MMA News’ James Lynch ahead of his fifth UFC outing this weekend, Brady discussed his matchup with Chiesa, suggesting he has the advantage wherever the fight goes.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Chiesa, but I’ve got to make a statement and that’s what I plan on doing… On paper, we’re both grapplers. But I think I have an edge in just being more athletic, and I think I have the better standup. I feel like wherever this fight goes, if it goes to the ground I think I have the advantage, if we grapple I feel like I have the advantage, if it stays on the feet I feel like I have the advantage. I just think I’m the overall better fighter.

“I think there’s gonna be a lot of good grappling exchanges… he’s an amazing grappler. He’s beaten some of the best guys. So I’m looking forward to testing out my skills versus his. I think I’m just gonna be a little bit too much for him.”

When asked for his prediction on how the fight will end, Brady told MMA News that he believes he’ll submit Chiesa on November 20. If he does force a tap or put “Maverick” to sleep, Brady will be the second man to submit him in just four months. In Chiesa’s previous outing, he fell to a D’Arce choke against top-five welterweight Vicente Luque.

“I’ve had plenty of time, I’m gonna be in amazing shape, and I’m coming for a hard 15-minute fight. But I plan on getting it done before then… Honestly, I feel like I’m going to submit him. He’s (got) very good offensive jiu-jitsu, but he has four losses by submission, and I feel like I’ve been doing very well with my submissions in my fighting and in my training; it’s just getting better and better. I feel like that’s an area where I’ll be able to catch him.”

Conor McGregor, Paul Felder

UFC welterweight contender Sean Brady has suggested former lightweight Paul Felder is getting the itch to come out of retirement, and would certainly do so for a fight against MMA’s biggest superstar Conor McGregor.

During his career, Felder built a reputation as one of the most entertaining and thrilling men on the UFC roster. The perennial contender fought in wars against Dan Hooker and Edson Barboza, recorded a win over current UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira, and collected six bonuses in 15 appearances on MMA’s biggest stage.

After defeating James Vick and Barboza in 2019, Felder was looking to mount a final charge towards the title. Those aspirations came to a halt when he fell on the wrong side of a tight split decision after five rounds against “The Hangman” in New Zealand last February. Despite the competitive affair, Felder admitted he was thinking about hanging up his gloves.

Nine months later, “The Irish Dragon” showed the heart and determination that made him a fan favorite. On less than a weeks’ notice, the 37-year-old replaced the injured Islam Makhachev to main event UFC Vegas 14 against Rafael dos Anjos. After a second consecutive loss, Felder announced his retirement this year while on commentary duty for a UFC Fight Night.

Brady Reveals Felder Is Training For A Return

Despite only being months out from his decision to officially hang up his gloves, talk of a Felder return has already surfaced. During an October episode of Dana White’s Contender Series, the veteran admitted he was missing active competition “tremendously,” and revealed he’d started hitting pads again.

Now, in an exclusive interview with MMA News, Felder’s teammate Sean Brady has said “The Irish Dragon” is ready to mount a comeback. Brady, who competes at 170 pounds, is set to face top-10 contender Michael Chiesa at UFC Vegas 43 this weekend. While discussing his preparation, the undefeated welterweight said Felder has been getting back into training.

The 28-year-old believes one fight that would certainly lure Felder back to the Octagon is a clash with former two-division champion Conor McGregor.

“He’s getting back to it… he’s gotta start scratching that itch. He’s definitely talking about getting back in the room with us, he’s back with our strength and conditioning coach. So, I’d like to see him and Conor. I know that’s a fight that would make him wanna come back. Paul’s not gonna shoot no takedowns on Conor so Conor hasn’t gotta worry about that. I know that’s a fight Paul would come back for so, who knows, we’ll see.”

Catch our exclusive interview with Sean Brady ahead of UFC Vegas 43 below:

This isn’t the first mention of a clash between McGregor and Felder. While speaking to Joe Rogan following his victory over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 last January, the Irishman claimed that “any one of these little mouthy fools can get it, even that little fool at the desk,” who was, of course, lightweight contender Paul Felder.

That, coupled with the commentator’s suggestion that McGregor should never fight in the UFC again after the threats he made to Dustin Poirier in July, means the storyline is ready-made for a Felder vs. McGregor showdown.

How do you think a fight between Paul Felder and Conor McGregor would play out?

Geoff Neal Promises “Fireworks” Against Ponzinibbio At UFC 269

Geoff Neal, Santiago Ponzinibbio

UFC welterweight Geoff Neal says someone’s either getting slept or getting hurt when he enters the Octagon with Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC 269.

Neal will be in action for the second time this year when he faces the Argentinian on December 11. In his previous outing, the 31-year-old fell on the wrong side of a decision against fellow contender Neil Magny. His defeat to “The Haitian Sensation” set him on his first losing streak of his 17-fight professional MMA career. He’d lost a five-round main event to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson five months prior.

While Neal looks to bring back the form that had him unbeaten at 5-0 in the UFC, including wins over Belal Muhammad, Niko Price, and Mike Perry, Ponzinibbio will be looking to carry the momentum from his last appearance into the final pay-per-view of 2021.

After returning from a two-year absence with a brutal knockout loss to Li Jingliang in January, the “Argentine Dagger” had his hand raised for the first time since 2018 when he outpointed Miguel Baeza in June. While he looks to make another step up the welterweight ladder, Neal will be looking to use the 35-year-old as a route back to form.

Neal Looks To Return To Sold-Out Arenas In Style

Ahead of his upcoming fight, Neal spoke to MMA News’ James Lynch. “Handz of Steel” said he’s excited to be fighting in front of fans for the first time since December 2019. Having lost twice in the quiet environment of the UFC Apex, Neal believes the energy and sound of the T-Mobile Arena crowd will certainly give him the “motivation” he needs on December 11.

“Those last two performances, I really just didn’t, I dunno, it was like a mental thing. I was in there, I just didn’t care. I was just chilling, you know what I mean. I’ve gotta be more aggressive… I’m so happy that we’re fighting in front of fans. That’s probably gonna play a big dynamic in my motivation and my drive. Fighting in that Apex is boring as fuck, I don’t wanna do that ever again. Hopefully my next fights are all gonna be in (front of) fans, in arenas; I like that uncomfortable feeling of just standing there in front of the crowd screaming. I love that,” Neal told MMA News.

Neal expects to give the crowd an entertaining watch in Las Vegas. Acknowledging Ponzinibbio’s toughness and aggressive style, the Texan told fans to expect fireworks at UFC 269. In his mind, either someone’s getting rendered unconscious or they’re getting left with some heavy damage after a 15-minute war.

“He’s a tough opponent… We match up pretty well. We have kinda the same style. The only thing different is I’m southpaw and he’s orthodox… Honestly, especially this fight, it’s either gonna end in the first round or the second round, or it’s gonna be like, a three-round battle. There’s really no secret to this fight, especially with his style… He’s not gonna wanna shy away and I’m not gonna wanna shy away. I like to come forward, he likes to come forward. So, it’s fireworks. Somebody’s gonna either go to sleep or somebody’s getting hurt.”
