UFC Confirms Velasquez-Werdum Rematch For UFC 207 PPV In December

As noted earlier this evening, UFC is targeting a Bantamweight Title bout between Dominick Cruz and Cody “No Love” Garbrandt for the co-main event of their upcoming year-end pay-per-view event, which features Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title as the main event.

Apparently the third-from-the-top fight on the card will be quite the blockbuster affair as well.

UFC.com confirmed the long-rumored bout between former UFC Heavyweight Champions Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum for the Las Vegas PPV event in December.

Below is the announcement from the official UFC website:

WERDUM-VELASQUEZ REMATCH SET FOR UFC 207

There will be no world championship on the line when Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez meet for the second time in a UFC 207 bout on Friday, December 30 in Las Vegas. But don’t expect there to be any less intensity when two of the greatest heavyweights of all-time attempt to settle their score at T-Mobile Arena.

Originally scheduled to face each other for the second time in February, an injury to Velasquez scrapped the bout, and heavyweight history was ultimately altered, as Werdum went on to lose the belt he took from Velasquez in June of 2015 to Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 in May.

Since that bout, Brazil’s Werdum bounced back with a three round unanimous decision over Travis Browne in September that cemented his No. 1 ranking atop the division. But while Werdum is seeking a championship rematch with Miocic, he first has business to settle with the No. 2-ranked Velasquez.

A two-time heavyweight champion, California’s Velasquez bounced back from his defeat to Werdum with a Performance of the Night knockout of Browne at UFC 200 in July. And in December, he not only wants to earn a crack at the belt and the opportunity to join Randy Couture as the only fighters in UFC history to win the heavyweight championship three times, but to avenge the second loss of his career against the man who submitted him at UFC 188.

UFC 207, which is headlined by the UFC women’s bantamweight championship bout between Amanda Nunes and Ronda Rousey, airs live on Pay-Per-View.

Apparently Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey won’t be the only title match taking place at the UFC’s year-end pay-per-view in Las Vegas.

Multiple sources are reporting that Dominick Cruz vs. Cody Garbrandt is “in the works” for the December 30th PPV event in Nevada, which as noted, will feature a main event of Nunes-Rousey for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title.

Cruz defending his UFC Bantamweight Title on the 12/30 fight card had already been rumored after UFC President Dana White all but confirmed the news during a recent appearance on FOX Sports 1. The question was who would get the next shot at the champion — Garbrandt, TJ Dillashaw or someone else.

It looks like “No Love” is the fighter that the UFC has decided to go with.

UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey takes place on Saturday, December 30th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Report: UFC To Cease Production of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ Soon

Jeremy Botter of FloCombat.com tweeted out this piece of news late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning:

While “The Ultimate Fighter” airing directly after WWE Monday Night Raw on Spike TV was the catalyst for the initial UFC boom period, the show’s popularity and relevance had fallen off after doing at least two seasons a year for over a decade. The current season, while praised by viewers for featuring the best fights on the show in recent memory, has done the worst viewership in the history of the franchise.

Allegations of “The Ultimate Fighter” growing stale have plagued the show for many years, though the format was tweaked a bit starting with season 17, which featured Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen as the coaches. At that point, the UFC hired a new production company to run the show, which took it in a more documentary-style format than the debauched, stereotypical reality show antics that it had become known for.

Apparently Conor McGregor will, in fact, be vacating one of his titles if he wins a second belt by defeating UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez in the main event of the upcoming UFC 205 pay-per-view in New York.

McGregor claimed that after he makes history as the UFC’s first two-division champion and gets a couple of pictures to document the historic accomplishment, he will vacate one of the titles, despite claiming otherwise in multiple interviews since his champion vs. champion bout against Alvarez was made official.

“Let me see the pictures on publications with a belt on each shoulder first. Let me go onto the side of that Octagon and raise two world titles, what’s never been done before, before talking about stripping me,” McGregor told Mike Dyce in a new Sports Illustrated interview this week. “Let me get the f**king things, let me do it.”

McGregor continued, claiming he’ll always listen to the proper business move, but reiterated the fact that he’d like to have a little fun with the two world titles before handing one of them over to the promotion.

“I’ll always listen to the correct business move, and I’ll always do what is the correct move, but let me do it and let me go back and look at some pictures of me with two belts and let me embrace it for half-a-day. Don’t be trying to take away the historic moment before I’ve even experienced it.”

UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor takes place on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from the world-famous Madison Square Garden arena in New York City.

While the former UFC Welterweight Champion claimed otherwise, UFC issued a statement on Monday evening claiming Georges St-Pierre is not a free agent.

GSP announced during his appearance with Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour at MMAFighting.com claimed that he was a free agent and had gotten out of his contract with the UFC.

Apparently the UFC doesn’t agree.

Below is the statement released by the UFC this evening:

Georges St-Pierre Reveals He Is A Free Agent, No Longer Under UFC Contract

“You heard it right. I’m a free agent.”

Those are the words of former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, who appeared on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour and had plenty to say about his current relationship with the UFC.

GSP revealed quite a bit during the very interesting podcast appearance. One major bombshell that St-Pierre dropped was that his lawyer, James Quinn, terminated his UFC contract after the promotion did not meet a deadline to offer him a fight recently.

As GSP explained, there was an offer on the table from Lorenzo Fertitta that led him to believe a return fight was a possibility, however when the company was sold to new owners WME | IMG, the offer was taken off the table.

“It was like a shock, because we felt like we were making progress, we were almost there,” St-Pierre said to show-host Ariel Helwani this afternoon. “When they told us that, I got angry.”

St-Pierre went on to talk more about being a free agent, explaining that he is no longer tied up in a contract with the UFC and is free to do what he wants.

And apparently GSP still feels he can do quite a bit.

“The reason I wanted to go back and fight is because i feel right now that I’m at my best,” St-Pierre said. “I’m truly confident I can beat the guys that are champions right now. I’m that confident. At least I’m a free man. Now, I know I’m free. I have other options. I’m not caught up legally with a contract. I’m a free man.”

St-Pierre also claimed that he thought things were leading towards a return in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and now that it’s clear that it won’t be happening, everyone comes out a loser in this situation.

“To [come back], it would have been a win-win situation. I think now what happened with this situation, the biggest loser is the fans. I’m a loser. The UFC is a loser. Even the UFC is a loser. They would have made good money. I was very pumped up a few weeks ago when we talked,” St-Pierre said. “Now, I’m not as pumped up as I was. I’m entering unknown water, unknown territory. I just don’t know what’s gonna happen.”
