This week’s episode of the MMA Wrap-Up looks back on UFC 116 in an attempt to calm down a little bit after a fantastic night of fights and ask ourselves a very serious question: really, Brock Lesnar is now the world’s best heavyweight? The guy who has only six pro fights on his record? One of which was against Min Soo Kim? Really? Okay.

Since it does indeed appear to be the case that Lesnar occupies the top spot, and since that does seem a little weird to me, the next goal is to figure out why it should be any stranger for Lesnar to be #1 than it was for Fedor Emelianenko, who suddenly seems like a puppy that the MMA world loved intensely until he chewed their shoes and was summarily stuck in the backyard and then forgotten about it. I promise this analogy did not make it into the video.

Check out this week’s episode below to see which flawed attempts at logic and humor did find their way to the internet.

Will Lesnar vs. Carwin Really Decide the Top Heavyweight in MMA?

Next week I’ll put together a new list of the Top 10 heavyweights in mixed martial arts, and for the first time since I’ve been making those lists, Fedor Emelianenko won’t be on top. Instead (barring something unforeseeable) I’ll have the Brock LesnarShane Carwin winner at No. 1.

But not everyone thinks Lesnar vs. Carwin absolutely determines the top spot in the heavyweight division. Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett and UFC commentator Joe Rogan both made recent comments in which they said the top of the heavyweight division isn’t quite as clear as it might seem.

Dana White, Fedor Emelianenko, and MMA’s Revisionist History

It must be nice to have a memory as pleasantly selective as Dana White‘s. It’s always there when he needs it, and it never fails to leave him feeling like the smartest guy in the room.

Take the recent upset loss that knocked Fedor Emelianenko from the top spot in the heavyweight division. To hear White tell it, he alone saw through the outsized fiction of Fedor, so it doesn’t surprise him to see the Russian fall.

“I’ve been saying that forever, but the media overhyped this mythological creature that they thought was the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world, which is just so…it’s so asinine and ridiculous,” he told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani in this video interview.

Brock Lesnar and Shane CarwinLAS VEGAS — The first thing that came out of Dana White‘s mouth was an admission.

“Our heavyweight division used to suck,” the UFC president said. “But now, it’s stacked with incredible talent, and all these guys are lined up, waiting to fight.”

Indeed, gridlock is forming on the road to the division’s championship. On Saturday night at UFC 116, current champion Brock Lesnar returns from illness to defend his belt against top contender and interim champ Shane Carwin with the world’s No. 1 heavyweight ranking on the line, but both guys don’t have to look too far in their rearview mirrors to see rival war wagons speeding up behind them.

Fedor EmelianenkoLAS VEGAS — For a time, Russian MMA heavyweight star Fedor Emelianenko was UFC President Dana White‘s obsession. Negotiations ensued, wild money figures were thrown about, and the flirtation ended short of consummation.

But the love story that never was will forever remain unrequited, it seems. White says that after Emelianenko lost to Fabricio Werdum last Saturday night in a Strikeforce show, any interest in him is gone for good.

“I’m not interested,” White said after a UFC 116 press conference. “Listen, how many times have you seen us sign a guy when he just loses in another promotion, you know? Oh, the guy just lost in Strikeforce, let’s sign him!”

The way some MMA fans have reacted to Fedor Emelianenko‘s upset loss to Fabricio Werdum, you’d think he was kin. You know who these people are. They’re the ones still moping around the house wearing the Fedor t-shirt they made themselves at the mall. Maybe they’re even staying up all night drinking Mountain Dew and re-watching the fight over and over again on YouTube while writing in their journals.

In short, they’re taking the loss a lot harder than Fedor probably is, which is weird and a little pathetic.

What it’s not, however, is terribly unusual for MMA’s passionate fan base. When people identify so intensely with a particular fighter, it’s normal for them to feel almost as if their own fates are bound up in that fighter’s victories and defeats. Maybe it’s not terribly healthy, but neither is all that Mountain Dew.
