Rant: With Top Fighters Leaving The UFC, How Long Until The Promotion Is No Longer High Level?

So lately we’ve been seeing a whole bunch of changes as far as the UFC is considered. Fighters are retiring and leaving the organization at a rate that seems pretty unusual considering the companies reputation as housing the greatest fighters in the world. The old saying is that if you’re not in the UFC you’re not fighting the best in the world. But with the company’s recent sale for billions of dollars, the fighters under the UFC banner are beginning to undergo a shift in thought process. The endeavor is called prize fighting for a reason and fighters are figuring that if they aren’t going to be paid what they’re worth then they’re going to explore their options.

Rick Story is apparently prepping to become a firefighter, something that most fans are finding to be at once alarming and fitting. He fought out his contract and ended up suffering a KO loss at the hands of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. The loss likely harmed his chances at negotiating a better deal for himself. So instead of rush back to the cage, Story is thinking about the second phase of his life outside of fighting. Not everyone can be Conor McGregor after all.

So what exactly does this mean for the promotion that touts having the best fighters in the world?

It means that in order to keep their high level talent happy and coming back for more, they have to design contracts that are going to help them keep food on the table and build an adequate enough nest egg so they can ride off into sunset with confidence that their future is secure. In reality that’s a lot to ask. But these days, now that the fighters know what the brand is worth, they’re not willing to get brain damage for pennies.

This issue is also why I believe Kyoji Horiguchi decided to leave the organization for Rizin.

2017?4?16? ?????? ???? vs ???? #RIZIN2017 #RIZINFF #MMA #MMAJP #yokohamaarena @kyoji1012 @yuki.motoya

While you can argue the fact that Horiguchi may have wanted to compete in a promotion that was closer to home, the evidence is pretty clear that before Zuffa was sold all the Japanese standout cared about was becoming the best in the world. Of course there can be other issues at play, but that doesn’t change the fact that one of the promotion’s top flyweights has found himself signing up with another organization. It’s all speculation for now, but you have to wonder if Rizin gave Kyoji Horiguchi an offer he couldn’t refuse. If they were willing to bring him the money he requested then why not take the offer.

So what exactly is my point?

Phillipe Nover retires, Valerie Letourneau is cut, and now Kyoji Horiguchi is with Rizin. If you can’t see that there’s a pattern here then you’re clearly blind. The UFC is facing a bit of a conundrum. They were able to resign Georges St-Pierre which is definitely a big win for them. That means potential pay-per-view events that will bring in higher buy-in rates. But while the company may be able to show Georges St-Pierre the money, fighters like Rick Story and Kyoji Horiguchi are going to feel inclined to look at their options outside of the promotion. While it’s up to the fighters to build their own brand in order to generate more money for themselves, you have to think that if a competitor feels like he isn’t being given what their worth that they’ll seek employment elsewhere. For the promotion that claims to have the best fighters on the planet under their roof, the more we see departures of solid high level talent like Story and Horiguchi, the less that claim seems true. The UFC has trouble brewing on the horizon and if they don’t stop the bleeding now then things are only going to get worse.

What do you think about the current landscape of the UFC?

Fallout: The Curious Case Of Travis Browne

UFC Fight Night featured a heavyweight main event against the surging Derrick Lewis and hit or miss Travis Browne. Now that description of Browne isn’t to insult the man. He’s still one of the best heavyweight fighters out there. But lately he hasn’t been able to hit the mark. At first everyone and their momma blamed Browne’s downfall on the training he’s been receiving. But with another loss under a different coach, one has to wonder if Browne is simply declining.

He’s still one of the best heavyweight fighters out there. But lately he hasn’t been able to hit the mark. At first everyone and their momma blamed Browne’s downfall on the training he’s been receiving. But with another loss under a different coach, one has to wonder if Browne is simply declining.

The fight itself was a pretty interesting affair. In fact, it was a tale of two rounds. The first round showcased exactly why so many people were high on Travis Browne to begin with. He was moving on the outside, controlling the distance with his longer limbs and straight shots. In all honesty, it looked as if the changes made to his coaching staff was beginning to pay off in a big way. Browne hurt Lewis a number of times from distance and his timing was spot on.

Then came round two.

Derrick Lewis proved that not only does he have keen finishing instincts, but that he has heart to go along with it. Lewis was on Browne at the beginning of the second frame and didn’t let up his attack. He swarmed with a barrage of punches that forced Browne along the cage and it seemed to be only a matter of time as Lewis pressed the attack. Eventually we saw Lewis drop Browne, follow him to the ground and eventually finish the fight with devastating ground and pound.

It was an impressive victory for Lewis to say the least, yet I couldn’t help feeling for Browne. After such an impressive first round, appearing to shake off the stigma of training under his former coach at Glendale Fighting Club, Browne looked like his former self. In fact he showed clear signs of improvement despite the knockout loss. It’s a tough and unforgiving sport and while another loss may tarnish Browne’s record, giving up at this point would definitely be the wrong move.

Travis Browne still has potential. The best move for him moving forward is to take some time off, consider his options, and simply look to improve. He’s only one fight removed from switching up his coaching staff. He needs to give himself the time to adjust as well as give his body time to heal.

For Derrick Lewis things have never looked brighter. That over training and over…sexing, could have harmed his performance in the first round. It’s safe to say that he’s not going anywhere but up in the heavyweight division and with a brutal style of fighting and unorthodox style on the mic, it’s safe to say ‘The Black Beast’ is creating a brand all his own.

What do you think should be next for Derrick Lewis and Travis Browne?

The Technique Thief: The Move Holly Holm Should Steal From Dominick Cruz

If you know me, which many of you don’t, you’d understand that I’m absolutely in love with striking. I certainly love MMA and respect the ground game a ton (this coming from a guy who was thoroughly entertained by Jon Fitch back in the day), but striking has always been my favorite part of the game and as such, I do have a leaning towards striking based fighters. But after witnessing the main event of UFC 208 it became painfully obvious that what was missing was some quality grappling work, mainly on Holly Holm’s end who initiated the wrestling exchanges.

Germaine de Randamie came in with a game plan that entirely based on putting her fist on Holm’s chin. Holm did indeed try to mix things up, but it was painfully obvious that she wasn’t getting anywhere with her tactics.

So now that she’s on a three fight skid, what exactly should Holly Holm be putting into her game? It’s a fairly common question with a reasonably obvious answer. Holly needs a wrestling game. But saying so is fairly boring. Instead, we should be wondering what kind of wrestling moves would compliment her game. Even further still, which high level fighter should she be watching and hoping to emulate in order to add some wrestling skills into her game that makes sense with her striking style?

Dominick Cruz’s knee tap takedown.

A knee tap takedown isn’t some kind of patented move owned by Dominick Cruz. It’s a wrestling technique that you can find many fighters employing. The reason I reference Dominick Cruz’s knee tap is because of the way he implements the technique while at the same time using lateral movement.

Holly Holm’s striking style is all based around lateral movement. Her biggest issue that she’s facing is the fact that she likes to blitz in naked with no fakes or feints before hand. Her opponents know that she wants to come forward with punches when she performs her blitz and she does though usually on the same angle offering nothing in the way of surprises.

But some added lateral movement coupled with a blitz and finishing with a knee tap takedown would make her a dangerous woman to face off against.

While the above clip is a double leg takedown, the principles remain the same in terms of using level changes as well as cutting to the correct angle off her own footwork. As Holly initiates the blitz from her southpaw stance, she could abandon the attack or use it as a smokescreen, get a deep underhook with the left arm and knee tap with her right arm to throw her opponent off. She could also use it as a counter as well as Holly has fine countering sense.

But all this is going to remain a pipe dream unless it’s actually practiced on the mat. While this addition to her game wouldn’t fix all the issues, no fighter is perfect after all, it would go a long way to making Holly Holm an even more dangerous fighter at this point.

What techniques do you think Holly Holm could use?

Fallout: UFC 208 AKA The Brooklyn Screw Job

Well that was interesting to say the least. UFC 208 wasn’t the most action packed event of the new year and it’s definitely left us with more questions than answers at its conclusion. Holly Holm failed to be the first woman to win belts in multiple divisions as she dropped a razor close decision to Germaine de Randamie or the post bell puncher as she’s begun to be labeled. The fight was competitive with a few slow spots here and there. But the drama surrounding the main event more than made up for any lulls in the action. So what’s the takeaway from UFC 208?

The fight was competitive with a few slow spots here and there. But the drama surrounding the main event more than made up for any lulls in the action. So what’s the takeaway from UFC 208?

Holly Holm Has Nothing To Be Sorry About

A lot of people want to rag on Holly Holm because she missed some key opportunities to take advantage of a rocked de Randamie. But the perhaps the biggest critic of Holm was herself. At the post fight press conference she seemed to be beating up on herself almost as harshly as Germaine did during the bout. While Holm does need to work on the technique in her takedowns, thinking that she was being stupid isn’t going to solve things. Many believed that she won and while that may be scant consolation, it’s something she should hold onto as she takes the next step in her career. She does have a bloodthirsty streak, but she can no longer hesitate when she has her opponent on the ropes.

Germaine de Randamie Isn’t A Cheater

Germaine de Randamie is the new women’s featherweight champ and already people are disrespecting her reign. While she won the decision, many believe that Holm deserved the nod. But perhaps the biggest impression de Randamie made on the fans was the fact that she continually landed punches to Holm’s chin after the bell. Many believe points should have been taken, which isn’t too outrageous a call. What is pretty dumb are people believing de Randamie is a cheater. If anything, Germaine exhibited her hotblooded nature more than proving that she’s a cheat. The heat of the moment affects fighters in different ways. I’ve thrown a punch or kick a bit late, but not to take advantage. When your mind is in fight mode sometimes slip ups really can occur. But really it’s a situation for the ref. Germaine will have her chance to prove she’s the legit champion in time. Until then all the fans and haters will have to accept the judges decision.

Referees Suck

Yeah…they really do. Next time the UFC has a belt on the line they better call in “Big” John McCarthy and Herb Dean every time. Doesn’t mean there won’t be any chance at controversy, but at least you’d have some tried and true refs with plenty of experience on hand.

What are your takeaways from UFC 208?

Throwback: Georges St-Pierre Trains With Muay Thai Legend John Wayne Parr

For awhile now everyone has been speculating as to if and when Georges St-Pierre would make a return to the cage. As it stands, the clock is still ticking and we all know that time waits for no man. If Georges St-Pierre hopes to make a return to action and remain competitive against the best fighters on the planet then he’s going to need to bust his ass in the gym and get the ball rolling before it’s too late.
