Dana White meets with Joe Lozito.Joe Lozito was just another guy heading to work on the New York City subways last Saturday morning when he was suddenly faced with a life-or-death situation.

Lozito was riding the uptown No. 3 train when knife-wielding Maksim Gelman boarded his car before approaching Lozito and uttering the words “You are going to die.” Gelman had already allegedly killed four people and injured five others, but Lozito’s ensuing actions helped make sure the death toll would rise no higher. Lozito used a takedown he says he learned while watching many hours of mixed martial arts to put Gelman on his back. Gelman stabbed Lozito multiple times, but Lozito was able to restrain him long enough for police to jump in and arrest the madman.

“I wouldn’t win any style points for taking him down, but it did the job,” Lozito told the New York Daily News.

Yet it was a takedown that would have made Georges St. Pierre proud.

Joe LozitoJoe Lozito is a longtime fan of mixed martial arts. He remembers watching UFC 1 back in 1993, he once attended an EliteXC event with Kimbo Slice just to watch Joey Villasenor, and on his 12th wedding anniversary, he surprised his wife Andrea with tickets to UFC 101. Ask him which fighters he’s enjoyed watching most over time, and he’ll unfurl a laundry list ranging from Dan Severn to Eddie Alvarez to Keith Jardine, who he admits is probably his favorite. Lozito goes on and on, afraid to leave anyone out.

“I admire the heck out of all the guys,” he says. “I hate to list them because I don’t want to short-change anyone and leave them out.”

In the beginning, though, Lozito had a preference for freestyle wrestlers, which makes his story a little bit ironic and a whole lot heroic. Because last Saturday at just a few minutes before 9 a.m. ET, Lozito executed a takedown for the ages, one that would have made any MMA fighter proud. His heroic actions helped capture alleged multi-murderer Maksim Gelman on a New York city subway train.

Former UFC heavyweight champ Kevin Randleman admits hasty returns to the cage have been a detriment to his fighting career.

Randleman, who recently completed a small role in the upcoming Men in Black 3 film, tells MMAFighting.com he’s back in the gym training, but won’t be rushing into his next fight. Taking time out after the shoot to reevaluate his career, Randleman came to realize he hasn’t been allowing himself to recover from injuries.

“Any fighter will tell you that the hardest thing to do is wait to heal but I have learned my lesson — the hard way unfortunately — and I did way more harm than good for myself pushing too much too soon,” Randleman said. “I also realized that when I would get in the cage that getting hurt was something that was always in the back of my mind because I knew I wasn’t 100 percent. I just tried to talk myself into it — because I wanted to fight so bad.”
