Former UFC Champion Germaine de Randamie Announces Retirement

After 25 years of competing for the biggest combat sports promotions around the world, Germaine de Randamie is hanging up her gloves.

The former UFC bantamweight champion announced on social media that she was officially retiring earlier than expected. ‘The Iron Lady’ went on to reveal that she had hoped to squeeze in one more fight before the end of 2024, but the UFC didn’t have a spot available.

“With so many mixed feelings I’m sharing this message with you guys,” de Randamie wrote on Instagram. “I definitely didn’t plan or envisioned/dreamed it this way, but hey it is what it is sometimes. I begged the UFC for 1 more fight. But it had to be this year. I promised myself I would retire from fighting December 31st, 2024.

“Unfortunately, the UFC told me all cards are fully booked. That’s why I decided that the time is now. I really wished I could have walked the walk one more time. But I guess it was not meant to be. To many people to thank personally so thank you all for being a part of my journey.

“Thank you for all the amazing memories. I’m forever grateful for all of them. Like I always say “DIE WITH MEMORIES, NOT DREAMS”

Germaine de Randamie was the UFC’s first-ever women’s featherweight champion

Originally, de Randamie was set to square off with Nora Cornolle in September, but she was forced to bow out of the bout after breaking her finger and fracturing her foot. Her last appearance inside the Octagon was in April when she came up short against Norma Dumont at a Fight Night card in Las Vegas.

She ends her mixed martial arts career going 7-3 under the UFC banner and 10-5 overall. Along the way, she became the promotion’s first-ever women’s featherweight champion via a unanimous decision victory over Holly Holm at UFC 208.

The following year, she was stripped of the title after refusing to defend it against Cris Cyborg over alleged PED use. ‘The Iron Lady’ returned to the bantamweight division shortly after where she earned wins against Raquel Pennington, Aspen Ladd, and Julianna Pena.

Before moving into MMA, de Randamie found success as a kickboxer, winning multiple world titles and setting the record for most consecutive wins by a female fighter.

Germaine de Randamie has announced her retirement from mixed martial arts, bringing an 11-year stint in the UFC to an end.

After establishing her name under the Strikeforce banner, a strong start to life inside the Octagon peaked with de Randamie becoming the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight champion in 2017.

Having beaten Holly Holm to capture the title, “The Iron Lady” didn’t make a defense after turning down a fight with Cris Cyborg owing to the Brazilian’s history of PED usage, a move that resulted in the UFC stripping her of the gold.

The Dutchwoman returned to 135 pounds in 2018 and reeled off wins over then-future champ Raquel Pennington and Aspen Ladd before a failed title bid opposite Amanda Nunes in December 2019.

After a win over another future bantamweight queen in Julianna Peña was followed by a hiatus spanning three and a half years, de Randamie was outpointed by Norma Dumont in her comeback fight this past April. Per a recent Instagram post, that result will go down as the last addition to the 40-year-old’s record.

Despite being booked to face Jacqueline Cavalcanti next January following the cancellation of her scheduled clash against Nora Cornolle in Paris last month, de Randamie has ultimately decided to hang up her gloves after being denied a final farewell fight before the close of this calendar year.

“Hey guys, with so many mixed feelings I’m sharing this message with you guys,” de Randamie wrote. “I definitely didn’t plan or envision/dream it this way, but hey it is what it is sometimes. I begged the UFC for 1 more fight. In addition to her 15-fight career inside the cage, de Randamie also enjoyed a successful stint in the kickboxing realm, where she amassed an undefeated record of 46-0.

Germaine de Randamie eyes title rematch with Julianna Peña in UFC return let's make it happen

Eyeing a return to the Octagon before the close of the year, inaugural featherweight champion, Germaine de Randamie has announced intentions to make a bantamweight comeback – ideally in a vacant championship rematch against either former-foes, Julianna Peña, or Raquel Pennington.

de Randamie, the inaugural featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined since submitting former undisputed bantamweight titleholder, Peña back in October 2020, rallying to beat The Ultimate Fighter winner with a stunning third round guillotine choke submission win.

Since then, de Randamie and her partner welcomed their first born child, with a planned clash with most recent title challenger, Irene Aldana back in November 2021 cancelled after the Dutch kickboxer withdrawing due to an undisclosed injury.

However, earlier this year, the Utrecht native confirmed her intentions to make a summer comeback, and whilst failing to meet the timeline for a return – de Randamie has instead confirmed her plans to fight in either November or December of this year, returning to a training camp

And in terms of potential comeback opponents, de Randamie, 39, weighed up potential fights with either Peña or Pennington, in rematches to land the vacant bantamweight title in her return.

“In an ideal world, Julianna Peña or Raquel Pennington,” Germaine de Randamie told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “But like I said, I’m not in the position to ask for anybody and I’m never the person to do that. But if I would have to say somebody – and I say that with the utmost respect because I’m a true, true, true fan of her – but I would say a fight with Pannie Kianzad.”

“If the UFC really wants a banger, because she and I are both not going to shoot for a takedown,” Germaine de Randamie explained. “We’re going to bang it out in the middle of the cage. That would be a fun fight. Like I said, whatever the UFC wants to give me and whatever gives me a shot at the title. Let’s make it happen. That’s what I’m shooting for. I’m going to give it my all in my comeback fight. I know I have to deliver. That’s my focus. I’ve got to deliver and make sure everybody knows I’m still there and I’m coming for [the title].”

Germaine de Randamie plans UFC return in November fire burning in me

Having previously missed out on an initially planned Octagon return in the summer, inaugural featherweight queen, Germaine de Randamie has revealed she is currently in talks to make a UFC comeback at the end of October or November of this year.

de Randamie, who has been sidelined for three years, most recently submitted former bantamweight champion, Julianna Peña with a third round guillotine choke on ‘Fight Island’ in October 2020.

Taking time away from the Octagon as herself and he partner welcomed their first child, de Randamie was briefly slated to featured at UFC 268 back in November 2021 at Madison Square Garden against most recent title challenger, Irene Aldana, however, withdrew from the clash in September, citing injury.

Germaine de Randamie confirms plans for November return to UFC

Recently confirming plans for a return to the Octagon as she renewed training, de Randamie has informed Dutch outlet, Eurosport of her intention to fight under the banner of the UFC before the end of the year.

“We are full in training and I don’t have a date yet but we are going for November or October – end of October or November,” Germaine de Randamie said. “I’m feeling good. I’m waiting for the call. Right now, my manager is negotiating so, we’ll see. But, 2023 it will be anyway.”

“I have to say, honestly, after three years it is tough because I am also getting older by the day,” Germaine de Randamie explained. “My body feels that, but there is a fire burning in me. You can no longer take that fire away and especially now that I have become a mother, I fight for a different goal; my little man. I want to make him proud. I want him to be proud of mama. So, in the end, whoever is in front of me it will be them or me. That’s one thing for sure.”

Winning inaugural featherweight gold back in 2017, Utrecht striker, de Randamie landed a close, debated decision win over former bantamweight titleholder, Holly Holm in the pair’s inaugural title affair.
