Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach Rafael Freitas has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual penetration in New Mexico.

Freitas — who notably trained a number of fighters at Jackson Wink MMA such as former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Michelle Waterson — had a court appearance Saturday in which the state filed a motion to keep him detained until trial. He is currently being held without bond.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by ESPN via Bernalillo Metropolitan Court, Freitas is accused of drugging and raping one of his students who allegedly had security footage of the incident.

“The student told investigators that Freitas came to her home Nov. 7 for an appointment to massage her legs and feet. The woman had been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu with Freitas for six years and had recently experienced cramping in her lower body.

The two ate breakfast together and while she was using the restroom, she said Freitas prepared her a second glass of orange juice. The student was also drinking wine and added whiskey and ginger ale to the juice. About 20 to 30 minutes after drinking the beverage, the woman laid on her couch and at that point she believes Freitas started massaging her legs and feet. But she quickly fell asleep on the couch.

When the woman woke up hours later, she told investigators that Freitas was gone and she was naked from the waist down. Days later and still confused about what happened, the woman remembered that she had a security camera installed in her living room. She watched the surveillance video of the events of Nov. 7 and also gave the video to investigators.

Per the criminal complaint, the video shows Freitas “possibly” dropping something into the woman’s orange juice glass while she was in the bathroom. Freitas made a “flicking” motion with his hand over the drink, per the complaint.

Later, the video shows what appears to be Freitas removing the woman’s shorts and forcing oral sex on her while she was asleep on the couch. The criminal complaint reads that when Freitas maneuvered the woman’s legs following the massage, they seemed like “dead weight.” The video also shows, per the complaint, Freitas’ right arm moving back and forth rapidly with his hand near the women’s groin area. Before leaving, Freitas took the woman’s hand, which appeared to be limp, and rubbed it against his genitals.

Per the complaint, after Freitas left the home, the video showed the woman laying motionless for about 50 more minutes before sitting up and checking her cell phone.”

Freitas was a cornerman for Holm as recently as her unanimous decision win over Irene Aldana in October. However, Jackson Wink deny he was ever a coach for them.

“[Freitas] is not an employee of Jackson Wink Academy and never has been,” Jackson Wink MMA spokesperson James Hallinan said in a statement.

That’s despite Freitas having a deleted page on the Jackson Wink MMA website which stated he was “one of the main grappling coaches at Jackson Wink MMA Academy.”

As per ESPN, Freitas is also an instructor at a Gracie Barra Brazilian jiu-jitsu affiliate in Albuquerque that several local MMA fighters train at.

Demetrious Johnson will finally have his chance to claim the ONE Championship flyweight title.

A match between Johnson and reigning ONE flyweight champion Adriano Moraes has been set for February 24, as was announced during the broadcast of ONE: Big Bang.

Johnson earned his shot at the belt after running through the 2019 ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix. The tournament saw Johnson pick up a submission victory over Yuya Wakamatsu, followed by a decision victory over Tatsumitsu Wada, before beating longtime ONE Championship staple Danny Kingad in the finals.

Prior to joining ONE, Johnson had a long reign as the inaugural UFC flyweight championship. He defended that belt 11 times during a run that, to many – including UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya – cemented his place as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. Following a controversial split-decision loss to Henry Cejudo, Johnson was part of a highly publicized “trade” that saw him go to ONE Championship and Ben Askren come back to the UFC in return.

Now, he faces Moraes, who at 18-3, has been on quite the run himself. he is a three-time ONE champion, who has avenged both of his title defeats. In fact, all three of his losses have come by split decision. He comes into the fight against Johnson after reclaiming his title from Geje Eustaquio. When he does step back in the cage, it will be after an over two-year-long layoff.

Johnson and Moraes were originally scheduled to meet earlier this year in Jakarta, Indonesia, before the coronavirus pandemic halted those plans. Now that ONE is back to running regular shows, hopefully this fight will stay intact and we can finally see who the top flyweight is.

Who do you think wins the fight between Demtrious Johnson and Adriano Moraes?

Ahead of his return to professional mixed martial arts on December 12th. under the Arena Fight Championship banner, UFC veteran, Artem ‘The Russian Hammer’ Lobov has revealed he plans on calling time on his storied career in two year’s time.

Lobov, a staple of Straight Blast Gym under John Kavanagh, has featured prominently alongside former two-weight world champion and teammate, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor during the upcoming UFC 257 headliner’s career rise.

A contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 22, Lobov featured in the season’s lightweight final — ultimately dropping a unanimous decision defeat to tournament victor, grappling ace, Ryan Hall. On his route to the season’s finale, Lobov had notched wins over James Jerkins, Chris Gruetzemacher, and Julian Erosa.

On December 12th. — Lobov enters his promotional bow opposite Professional Fighters League alum, Ylies Djiroun, hoping to snap a three-fight skid in professional mixed martial arts.

During his time away from the sport, Lobov featured three times under the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship banner, famously scoring a unanimous decision win over fellow Octagon alum, Jason ‘The Kid’ Knight, and former boxing world champion, Paulie Malignaggi, before dropping a decision defeat to the former in a rematch.

Speaking with Jordan Ellis from LowKick MMA recently, Lobov spoke of his willingness to score an eventual rubber-match with Knight sometime next year but insisted that his career in combat sports is close to its ultimate conclusion.

Yeah, why not? Wherever the money will be,” Lobov said when asked about his interest in a potential trilogy with Knight. “Whoever offers the paycheck, I mean — I don’t hide it anymore, that’s it, I’m going to fight for two more years and that’s it. I have to try and make as much money as I can. I’m always making sure I’m a good business partner for any promoter that decides to work with me, I never pull out which is great.

When you invest so much money and costs into promotion of the fight and then the fighter pulls out, then you have to cancel,” Lobov said. “That’s a big cost and a big risk for any promoter, you know. With me, that risk doesn’t exist. In terms of the fans, they an always expect a great show and an aggressive fight. So people know exactly what they’re gonna get. And I would like to be happy with the paychecks that I get and return. So that’s my plan for the next two years.

The 34-year-old striker went on to explain how he plans on remaining active if he’s made plans for a couple more years of competition — hoping to exit combat sports without carrying any regrets alongside him.

I mean I just wanna fight as much as I can,” Lobov explained. “Because obviously once I know after after that there’ll be no more fighting. You wanna kinda get everything out of it [career], you wanna make sure you have no regrets. You wanna make sure when you’re leaving that you’re satisfied with everything thing and you’ve had enough and that’s it. That’s my plan now — fight as much as I can over the next two years and then that’s it. Adios.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is making the leap from fighter to promoter, and he’s hoping for big things from his new organization.

Nurmagomedov has been keeping himself busy in his post-fighting career. Following his sudden retirement after his win over Justin Gaethje, he has stayed active on social media, keeping up with fan interaction, and recently bought Gorilla Fighting Championship (now Eagle Fighting Championship) for $1 million. A post about a meeting with UFC president Dana White had some fans thinking he would be making his return to the octagon soon. As it turns out, the meeting was about a whole other kind of business arrangement.

In a press conference held in Russia (and translated by RT Sport), Nurmagomedov elaborated on what the two talked about.

“I had this offer to Dana White,” Nurmagomedov said. “I wanted to make a contract with UFC Fight Pass, to broadcast EFC fights there, kind of like their contract with M-1 but a bit different.”

“The Eagle” plans not to compete with the UFC, but rather work side-by-side with the organization to create a promotion that offers a roster full of talented fighters the opportunity to get themselves seen and eventually latch on with the world’s leader in MMA.

“I wanted to discuss the number of title defenses an EFC fighter needs to get into the UFC,” Nurmagomedov said. “When we sign fighters, we would like the organization to follow them into the UFC. For example, a guy signs for six fights. If he wins and defends his title a few times, we’ll get him a UFC contract, then after he signs we’ll handle his affairs.

“It’s no secret everyone wants to get into the UFC. Other promotions want their fighters to stay. I don’t want that. I want EFC to be a launchpad into the world stage.”

While he wants to eventually see his promotion become one of the biggest in the world, Nurmagomedov knows that it would be impossible to compete with the UFC right out of the gate. He hopes that by building up the careers of fighters that eventually make it to the UFC, the EFC will develop a reputation as a promotion top fighters are looking to join.

“We need at least 10 years to be better than UFC, so we don’t have those goals,” Nurmagomedov said. “A 23-year-old fighter can have six, seven fights, win the title and defend it, then sign with the UFC in just two years.

“That’s a more realistic short-term goal than looking ahead 10 to 12 years just for a chance to become the best promotion in the world. But we do aim to become one of the best in the world.”

It will be interesting to see how the UFC/EFC partnership plays out in the coming years. We’ve already seen how much of an impact appearing on Fight Pass has had for other organizations, as LFA and Invicta have launched the careers of countless UFC fighters and organizational champions. Only time will tell if Nurmagomedov’s organization can do the same for more European fighters.

Do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov’s new promotion will be a success? Let us know!
