UFC heavyweight Greg Hardy will be appealing his no contest result against Ben Sosoli.

Hardy outpointed Sosoli over three rounds to initially get the unanimous decision win at UFC Boston last week. However, it was later overturned as Hardy used an inhaler in between the second and third rounds.

He received permission after asking a nearby commission inspector — stating it was USADA-approved — before using it. However, using an inhaler is illegal regardless as Hardy’s win as well as bonus was taken away from him. But because he did receive permission, the former NFL star now plans on appealing the result:

“I think it’s something that we’re gonna have to fight out in court and figure it out,” Hardy said (via ESPN). “The long and short of it is I had no idea [it was against the rules].”

Hardy claimed to have notified the doctor, UFC and USADA about the inhaler. But given that he’s only been in the sport since 2018, he admits he’s still unsure on all the rules.

“I’m in the middle of figuring it all out,” Hardy added. “This is all new to me. As shocking as it may be, Greg Hardy does not know all.”

Many thought that Hardy was slowing down in the second round and that the inhaler gave him an advantage in the third. Others claim using an inhaler has no impact other than to help asthmatic users with their breathing.

For Hardy, he claims to have not needed the inhaler at all. But given that he received permission, he did not want to put himself at a disadvantage:

“I didn’t need it at all,” Hardy said. “I wanted to take the inhaler, because I have asthma and I was at a breathing disadvantage. … When they’re telling you [that] you can, you don’t want to continue putting yourself at a disadvantage if you don’t have to.”

What do you make of Hardy’s plans to appeal the result?

Greg Hardy is facing his toughest task yet against Alexander Volkov — however, he still expects to come out with the knockout victory.

Volkov was originally supposed to face Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC Moscow which takes place November 9. However, Dos Santos had to pull out due to injury with Hardy stepping in on over two weeks notice as they will now fight in the co-main event.

It is a considerable step up in competition as “Drago” is not only more experienced, but also boasts 30 professional wins. However, the NFL star is excited nonetheless:

“I’m excited, man,” he told TMZ (via BJ Penn). “There was a lot of things that played into this decision, dude. The big one was just the opportunity.

“It’s the big-time fight, it’s the high-level competition. It’s what any ‘Prince of War’ or future ‘King of War’ could ever hope for.”

Many in the mixed martial arts world believe Hardy is bound to lose this fight and it’s not surprising to see why. However, Hardy feels he can knock him out, especially as Derrick Lewis was able to do it at UFC 229 last year:

“And then second of all, somebody fell down, my teammate [dos Santos] went down, so somebody’s gotta fill in, the next man up’s gotta fill in,” Hardy added. “That’s always been my mentality, gotta hold it down for the team. The UFC always has my back. They took a gamble on me, you know what I mean? They let me in the door. So if they need somebody to fill in, then for sure, I’m about to go knock this dude out.

“And the last one, soft Derrick Lewis knocked this dude out. If ‘pillow hands’ Lewis can do it, for sure I feel like I can go in there and compete and knock this guy out. And he’s a monster, too.”

Lewis is one of the biggest knockout artists in the division, so it looks like Hardy is building up a potential fight with “The Black Beast” by taking a dig at him. If he beats Volkov, that is certainly a fight that could happen.

It looks like Alexander Volkov has received a replacement opponent for UFC Moscow. Ex-NFL star Greg Hardy has answered the call to step in on late notice and face the Russian in front of his native crowd.

MMA Fighting confirmed an initial report from ESPN, confirming the matchup. Bout agreements have not been signed as of this writing, but the fight is expected to be finalized shortly. Now, the fight between Volkov and Hardy is shifted into the co-main event, with the featherweight matchup between Zabit Magomedsharipov and Calvin Kattar now serving as the main event.

The news comes just days after Hardy’s initial unanimous decision win over Ben Sosoli at UFC Boston was overturned due to Hardy’s apparent illegal use of an inhaler in between rounds. Hardy’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career has been widely criticized. Not only due to his history of domestic violence, but also due to the UFC throwing him low-tier opponents.

That will no longer be the case, however, as Hardy will step into enemy territory against the No. 7-ranked heavyweight in the UFC. The matchup likely won’t sit well with many UFC heavyweights, including Francis Ngannou, the clear-cut No. 1-contender for the heavyweight throne who volunteered to step in and face Volkov in Russia after ex-heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos pulled out.

He offered the following reaction on Twitter after news of Hardy’s entrance into the bout was broken.
