Joe Rogan clarifies his comments about former NFL player turned MMA fighter Greg Hardy in his latest fight. During the most recent episode of his Fight Companion podcast, Rogan expressed how he thought Hardy’s performance was “terrible and a “joke.”

Moving along to his MMA podcast alongside UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, the longtime UFC color commentator made his stance known even more.

“You’re watching the highest level of fights,” Rogan stated (H/T to Bloody Elbow). “You’re watching the co-main event. He’s just not ready for a co-main event. He rushed out, he gassed out, he burned himself out and Crowder recovered. The way it should be is you should have the early fights for people who are learning the sport. And then you get to the last couple of fights, the co-main and the main, you’re supposed to be seeing assassins like you and Henry Cejudo.”

Hardy hit Allen Crowder with an illegal knee strike to the head that ended his promotional debut in the co-headliner. The UFC on ESPN+ 1 event down at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Rogan continued by stating that the UFC could’ve easily put another fight in the co-headliner.

“There’s another fight they could have put in place of that,” Rogan continued. “A hundred percent. And again, this is not a knock on Crowder or Hardy. They’re guys out there doing it, they’re trying, they did their job, they’re fighting. The ending was super unfortunate. Again, you don’t know whether or not he did it on purpose. Look, you’re getting punched in the face. It’s chaos.”

It’s no secret that former NFL star Greg Hardy’s UFC debut didn’t go well.

Hardy faced Allen Crowder in the co-main event of the UFC’s debut on ESPN. The pair fought on ESPN+ 1 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Hardy saw early success in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career with several first-round knockout finishes. However, things went much differently once he stepped into the Octagon.

Crowder was able to get the fight to the ground and wear Hardy out. The ex-NFL Pro Bowler was fading and hit Crowder with an illegal knee in the second round. Hardy was handed his first defeat of his career via disqualification. Speaking on a recent episode of his “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan offered his thoughts on Hardy’s debut.

While discussing with former UFC heavyweight-turned-comedian Brendan Schaub, Rogan called Hardy’s debut a “joke” (via BJPenn.com):

“Well, how’d that go?” Rogan asked Schaub. “How’d that work out? Terrible. It was a joke. It was a joke. I knew that [Hardy] was fading quick. I was like, ‘he’s fading, I don’t like the way he’s stepping, he looks exhausted, he tired out quick,’ Then he hit that guy with the illegal knee.”

There was already a hefty amount of negative publicity surounding Hardy’s debut as it was. Hardy, who has a history of domestic abuse, fought on the same card as UFC flyweight Rachael Ostovich. Ostovich was recently assaulted by her husband, a fellow mixed martial artist. Many were outraged that the UFC booked Hardy on the same card as Ostovich.

However, Ostovich has said numerous times she was not troubled by the circumstances, and even wished Hardy well in his debut.

That debut ended up being a joke according to Rogan.

Up to this point, he was under a rare developmental contract where the UFC is paying him to fight in the minor leagues. While doing a recent interview, Hardy opened up on the harsh comments from people getting to him. Thus, he admitted that it had been affecting him.

“I was in a bad place, bro. It kind of hurt me,” Hardy told TMZ Sports (transcript via MMA Mania). “You guys cover me for a long time, I hate losing, bro. I’m not a loser, for one. For two, I hate people thinking that I’m a cheater and just the way that it was all formed and shaped. It kind of hurt me, man.”

When it comes to the elephant in the room, the former NFL star claimed that it really was a timing issue and didn’t do it on purpose.

“Looking back and listening to the rule, I didn’t really understand the rule,” he said. “It was a different understanding. And the crazy thing is, in my mind, I wasn’t even gonna risk it, you know? I was literally waiting for him to get up. I saw the knee come up, and he grabbed the back of my other leg, so it feels like he’s standing up, man. And I was trying to time it.”

In the second round, referee Dan Miragliotta called it immediately after Crowder went down from the illegal knee to end the heavyweight showdown in the co-headliner. The UFC on ESPN+ 1 event down at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

In the eyes of top contender, he thinks that the former NFL star was expecting his opponent to pop up and it be a legal shot. That wasn’t the case, though, and the result was what it was.

“I don’t think his past transgressions had anything to do with what happened out there in the cage,” Blaydes told the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast (H/T to MMAJunkie). “I think he was super excited, because that was me. When I was an amateur, that was me – just in the cage swinging wildly, hitting guys in the back of the head because you’re just so amped up. It takes time to get used to fighting.

People don’t get you have to be calm and at the same time hyper-aggressive, which is a hard thing to do,” Blaydes said. “He threw that knee and I think he was expecting his opponent to pop up, and when he didn’t, he couldn’t stop the knee.”
