With Henry Cejudo’s recent victory over TJ Dillashaw, the future of the UFC’s flyweight division is looking very promising.

So much so, in fact, that former 125-pound title challenger Joseph Benavidez believes a rematch between himself and Cejudo is in order. He posted the following on Instagram, praising “The Messenger’s” performance and calling for them to run it back:

“No matter what was said between us before this battle I gained so much respect for Henry after our fight! Watching his performances and seeing what he’s done for this division (the one that I’ve been fighting for since it’s beginning) I have only gained more respect!

“Henry – other weight classes will be there but ours is still not certain. We have the power now more then ever to keep it moving forward and bring the respect it/we deserve! We represented for the flyweights that whole TUF season and delivered in our fight!

“(One of the hardest of my life and I know you feel the same) and we also did that on Saturday in Brooklyn! I want that belt, I was the first person to ever fight for that belt and I know the competitor in you wants to try to avenge the loss to me on your record!

“But like you said it is bigger then us … if you believe that to be true then this is the only option to keep this division moving forward, for all the current contenders, up and comers and the thousands dreaming right now of becoming the UFC Flyweight Champion.”

Cejudo and Benavidez initially met back in December of 2016. Benavidez took home a controversial split decision victory, handing Cejudo his second-ever loss in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Cejudo went on to earn back-to-back wins before landing another shot at then-flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

The former Olympian defeated Johnson at UFC 227 this past August via split decision, handing “Mighty Mouse” his first loss at 125 pounds. This past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019) Cejudo made his first career title defense. He knocked out bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in their superfight at 125 pounds.

On the same card, Benavidez defeated Dustin Ortiz via unanimous decision. Perhaps Benavidez will earn the next shot at the flyweight throne if UFC President Dana White decides to keep the division open.

TJ Dillashaw: “I’ve Never Said I Wasn’t A Sore Loser”

UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw does not take losing well.

The 135-pound champion is adamant to this day that he did not lose to Dominick Cruz back in January of 2016. Dillashaw lost a split decision to “The Dominator” and dropped the bantamweight title for his first defeat since 2013. Then, this past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019), Dillashaw was defeated by flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.

Dillashaw was attempting to cut down to 125 pounds and become a UFC “Champ Champ.” However, Cejudo finished Dillashaw via TKO in under a minute in the first round. After the fight, Dillashaw argued that the stoppage was early and he could’ve kept on fighting. Even UFC President Dana White agreed with Dillashaw’s assesment.

The 135-pound champion spoke to “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” on the matter recently. Dillashaw said he was “furious” about the decision, and admitted it was a tough pill to swallow. He believes if he fought Cejudo 100 times, he wins 99 of them (via MMA Mania):

“Obviously I was furious. It was, I mean a 30 second fight when I know I’m the better fighter. It’s just rough to swallow. If anybody’s been in my situation or just competing in general, you know what that’s like,” Dillashaw said.

“If we fight that fight 100 times I will win 99 of them. This, unfortunately, was that one fight. I’m not going to swallow this one very well. It’s a tough one for me, I was very serious of that. Especially when I have the UFC doctors telling me it’s an early stoppage.

“You had Dana White talking about it was an early stoppage. It just sucks man. There’s no other way to really put it.”

Given Dillashaw’s reaction to his losses to both Cruz and, now, Cejudo, the bantamweight champion has been labelled with the “sore loser” moniker. However, Dillashaw doesn’t nececarilly seem to disagree with this:

“Let’s be honest, I’ve never said I wasn’t a sore loser,” Dillashaw said. “I don’t take losing very well. That’s not a guess about me. I let my emotions get the best of me, that’s why I’m so competitive and that’s why I am who I am.

“That’s why I put that many hours into the gym and train as hard as I do. Even in practice I get pissed when I lose. You know? I’ve been known for that. My emotions get the best of me.”

Things didn’t go as planned for the bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw last night as he got dusted in the main event of UFC Brooklyn.

Reigning flyweight king Henry Cejudo needed only 32 seconds to turn away Dillashaw’s efforts to become the latest “champ-champ.” It was somewhat of a surreal moment that nobody saw coming.

Dillashaw would immediately protest the stoppage that some fans and UFC President Dana White felt was a bit too early for a fight of this magnitude. However, nothing can be done once a fight is called off by the referee (no matter how egregious it is).

Overwhelmed with disappointment and disbelief, Dillashaw took to Instagram to apologize to his fans for his performance or lack thereof.

Well F*#% that didn’t go as planned. Sorry to all my fans that I didn’t get to show all my hard work. Tough one to swallow having the fight taken from me like that. But I need to lead by example for my son and practice what I preach, brush my self off and pray that I get the chance to do it again.”

This is a setback for Dillashaw and his attempt to become only the fourth “double champ” in UFC history. He has already stated that he would love to run it back with Cejudo at 125-pounds.

Cejudo, however, doesn’t seem too keen on that idea.

TJ Dillashaw eyes another fight against UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.

This comes after Cejudo finished the UFC bantamweight champion to successfully retain the UFC flyweight title in the headliner of UFC on ESPN+ 1. This event down on Saturday night (January 19, 2019) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The expectation is that Cejudo will move up a weight class in order to do an immediate rematch against Dillashaw to challenge for the bantamweight title.

It all comes back to the early stoppage, which is what many people thought happened. The finish saw Dillashaw being rocked twice and dropped before being finished on the ground.

After the fight, Dillashaw made his feelings known and he wasn’t happy about how it ended.

Reaction

“Sucks to have it stolen from you,” Dillashaw told MMAjunkie. “I worked my butt off. It would be nice to actually get the chance to show it. It’s a title fight. It’s a champ-vs.-champ fight, and you’re going to stop the fight like that? I’m in on a single leg. (The referee) said, ‘Hey, show me something.’ I said, ‘OK.’ I’m on a single leg in a scramble, (Cejudo) stops punching, he’s defending a single leg. And (the referee’s) going to stop the fight? It’s just ridiculous. It’s pretty pathetic that I have better knowledge (than the referee).”

“If I’m going to lose, I want to lose,” Dillashaw said. “I want to lose if I’m going to lose. Look, congratulations, Henry Cejudo. Awesome. Great job, man. But you did not win. You did not win this fight. I am happy to accept defeat, but I did not lose. I was more rocked in the first Cody (Garbrandt) fight than that fight. I got clipped, hardly clipped behind the ear, and a grown man is going to be shoving you. Of course you’re going to be in a scramble. A grown-ass man is on top of me.”

It appears that Dillashaw will be able to write his wrong and how this fight ended. But, at the end of the day, he trained hard for this superfight and is fired up to get back inside of the Octagon.

“As you can tell, I’m a little frustrated. This (expletive) needs to happen again, at flyweight. This is bullshit. I worked my ass off 12 weeks to get here. To have it stolen from me in 30 seconds. You guys can see the fire. I’ll (expletive) fight tomorrow.”
