UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw will attempt to become the third-ever dual-weight champion in UFC history.

He’ll drop down to 125 pounds to challenge Henry Cejudo for the UFC flyweight title. The two champions will meet at UFC 233 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on January 26th. Dillashaw told Lance Pugmire of the L.A. Times recently that he believes a potential flyweight title win will only be a “stepping stone” for his legacy in mixed martial arts (MMA):

“I would say it’s going to be some work, but I’m excited about the work and I feel I’ll be in even better shape. It’s going to favor me. I’m going to continue to grow my legacy and this is just a stepping stone along the way. I believe I’m the greatest fighter on this planet right now and I’m going to continue to show it.”

Earlier this month Dillashaw claimed that the UFC is paying him very nicely to drop down to 125 pounds and “kill” the flyweight division. In regards to the division, many believe this could be the last-ever flyweight title fight in UFC history. Several top UFC flyweights have been released from their contracts and were informed the division will be closed down.

This entire ordeal sparked after Demetrious Johnson was traded from the promotion to ONE Championship. In return, the UFC received longtime welterweight great Ben Askren.

Dana White: Nobody Cared About The Flyweight Division

UFC President Dana White believes that nobody cared about the promotion’s flyweight division, amidst rumors that the weight class is shutting down.

The news hasn’t been made official as of this writing, but the belief is that the UFC’s flyweight division is coming to an end.

For the past several weeks rumors have been circulating around indicating the 125-pound division will close down. This came just after longtime UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson was traded to ONE Championship. Now, current division champion, Henry Cejudo, will defend his title against bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC 233.

Several top flyweights have been released from their UFC deals, and their managers have reportedly been told that the promotion plans on closing down the division. Recently, UFC President Dana White spoke on the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast to address the matter. White noted that the division never really took off. He also mentioned that nobody actually seemed to care about it either (via MMA News):

“The flyweight division just never took off,” White said. “It never caught on even with a dominant champion like Demetrious [Johnson], it just never caught on. People didn’t care.

“I battled for a long time, I tried to keep it alive and obviously it’s still going on now. We still have fights going on in that division. We’ll see what the future holds for it.”

Cejudo will defend the flyweight title against Dillashaw in the main event of UFC 233 on pay-per-view (PPV). The show goes down on January 26th from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. It could perhaps be the last UFC flyweight title fight in history.

Henry Cejudo vs. TJ Dillashaw with the UFC flyweight title up for grabs have been announced for the UFC 233 pay-per-view event.

The UFC today announced the bout between the current bantamweight champion and flyweight champ for the main event. It’s been well established that Dillashaw will move down 10 pounds to challenge for Cejudo’s 125-pound belt.

Cejudo beat Demetrious Johnson to capture the title by split decision in the co-main event of UFC 227 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Following the fight, Cejudo called for a fight against Dillashaw. It turns out that he also fought on this card when he scored a first round KO victory over Cody Garbrandt in the main event.

UFC 233 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the TV network’s streaming service, ESPN +.

The promotion has yet to confirm what fight will serve as the co-headliner but it will likely be Ben Askren vs. Robbie Lawler in a welterweight contest. The UFC will be announcing more bouts for this event in the coming weeks. Here’s how the current card looks like:
