Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson is no longer undefeated in flyweight competition.

This past summer, former Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo defeated Johnson via split decision to become the second-ever UFC flyweight champion. Little did anyone know, that would be Johnson’s last fight in the UFC. Earlier this week it was reported that the first major trade between mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions had been agreed upon.

The UFC has sent Johnson to ONE Championship, receiving welterweight Ben Askren in return. Johnson had a very big case for an immediate rematch against Cejudo, however, things seemed like they were trending in the opposite direction. Almost immediately after his win, Cejudo was involved in talks of a superfight with bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw.

With that being said, Johnson saw the writing on the wall, and his management made efforts to ship him out of the UFC. Now, he resides with ONE Championship and will be one of the promotion’s biggest stars. Speaking on a conference call recently, Johnson discussed his departure from the UFC. In regards to a potential rematch with Cejudo, “Mighty Mouse” said there was simply “nothing there” for him (via MMA Fighting):

“I think for me going back and trying to regain my title there was nothing there for me, because if I look at it as the standpoint as a martial artist, it was something that I’ve already beaten Henry Cejudo and I truly felt that I’ve been beaten a lot worse,” Johnson said.

“When I fought Dominick Cruz (for the 135-pound title on Oct. 1, 2011), I felt like I truly was the smaller guy. I mean, he suplexed me three times for God’s sakes. So with that I thought if I went back and fought (Cejudo), who knows how the fight could have went? I could have won it the third time, or I could have lost again, and I took a step back and I was like, ‘Okay, what do I truly want? Like ask yourself that, DJ, what do you truly want?’

“And I was like, I wanted something different, I wanted to mix it up, I wanted to do something different – I want to be able to walk out to the cage and feel butterflies, or if it’s the ring, I want to face a different type of competition and I knew if I went back and I would have won that belt again, then I knew that I would be staying in the exact same organization, fighting the exact same athletes — which, they are phenomenal athletes — but I’ve beaten pretty much everybody on that roster so far and so I felt this was a perfect opportunity to me. I wasn’t held by being the champion anymore.”

Superfights are all the rage these days in MMA. It looks like we may get another one, but TJ Dillashaw won’t let the UFC or Henry Cejudo dictate the terms.

UFC President Dana White has stated on multiple occasions that a champion vs champion match between Dillashaw and Cejudo should be contested at bantamweight. However, the former Team Alpha Male fighter is adamant that the fight takes place in the flyweight division.

“Who is Henry Cejudo to have the street cred?” Dillashaw told MMAjunkie.“I’ve been the one flirting with the idea of going down to 125 to fight a guy that was scared to fight me the entire time, a guy (Cejudo) beat.

“He beat a guy that was scared of me, and now he wants to come up and challenge me? It’s a little ridiculous if the UFC wants to get behind him.”

Before capturing the bantamweight title for the second time, Dillashaw was lobbying for a title shot against now-former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. However, the bout never came to fruition and now “Killashaw” finds himself in an interesting position. Regardless of the opponent.

 “No matter what, he comes to my weight class, or I go to his, I’ll whoop his ass,” Dillashaw (16-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) said of Cejudo (13-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC). “But who’s got the credit to go down? I’m the No. 3 pound-for-pound fighter right now. I should make the decision.”

TJ’s Call

Dillashaw has never competed at 125 pounds in his professional career. But he did get down to 140 pounds when the “Mighty Mouse” fight was being discussed. The fight eventually fell through.

As for the former Olympic gold medalist, Cejudo had trouble making the flyweight limit early in his MMA career. But a move up to bantamweight for his UFC debut seemed to help Cejudo adjust. Since moving back down to 125 pounds he hasn’t had any weight issues.

Dillashaw believes Cejudo is the same size as he is. He doesn’t want any excuses when he beats him, either, so he wants the fight to be at 125:

 “I’ll be boisterous,” he said. “I’m the one that’s a professional, I’m the one that can cut the weight. I’m not a big 135-er. I walk around under 150 (pounds) right now.

“I guarantee you Cejudo is just as big as me right now, I don’t want the excuse of me beating Cejudo’s ass and (him saying), ‘Oh, it’s because he’s bigger than me. (Expletive) that. I’m not. I’ll be at 125. There’s no excuses.”

For his own division, Dillashaw has some ideas there too. He thinks the UFC should book a title eliminator between ex-champ Dominick Cruz and Marlon Moraes.

 “As soon as they fight and win,” he said. “Dominick hasn’t fought in two years. Go beat Moraes, and then we’ll talk. Same with Moraes; Moraes lost to (Raphael) Assuncao. Come back, get that win, and prove yourself. Then I’ll (expletive) you guys up.”

Newly-crowned champion Henry Cejudo has been reunited with his UFC flyweight title.

Cejudo shocked the world when he defeated the only champion the UFC flyweight division has ever known. Shortly after Cejudo beat Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson to become the new flyweight king, he jumped on a plane and headed for Russia.

The new champ wasn’t going to party it up in mother Russia. To the contrary, the UFC had a number of festivities planned for the entire week-long promotional machine known as UFC Moscow. Unfortunately, Cejudo lost his luggage in transit and with it, his UFC flyweight title.

Perhaps the most insane part of the story is that this isn’t the first time Cejudo has lost something priceless. He lost his Olympic gold medal while escaping the California wildfires a year back:

“Unfortunately, my belt is in my luggage,” Cejudo told reporters in Moscow. “So now, on top of my gold medal, now it’s my belt. I don’t know what it is about gold. I can’t keep it.”

“Let’s be honest, material comes and goes,” he added. “It’s the memories, it’s the legacy that comes with being a champion. I’m going to get a gold medal back. I’m going to get a belt back. But it’s the memories that come with that that makes it special.”

Cejudo didn’t seem too shaken up about losing his newly acquired championship belt. Maybe “The Messenger” knew everything would work out in the end.

Cejudo announced today (Sept. 18 2018) via his Instagram account that he has been reunited with his flyweight title and all is now good.
