Former UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo is returning to the octagon for the first time in three years to challenge current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling for the title he vacated those three years ago.

In fact, he vacated his flyweight championship as well, but that’s another story.

Todays story is that these two ran into one another at the UFC Performance Institute earlier:

In the time Cejudo has been absent from competition, Sterling has had four fights, winning all four.

This began with his 88-second submission (rear naked choke) finish of Cory Sandhagen, before winning the UFC bantamweight championship in his first fight with Petr Yan (DQ). He has since defended it against the likes of former bantamweight champions Petr Yan (SD) in their rematch, and then TJ Dillashaw (TKO) last October.

Cejudo certainly has his work cut out for him. Sterling might actually be someone that can match his wrestling abilities.

Cejudo went into his first UFC title fight down at 125 lbs against Demetrious Johnson, losing via TKO midway through the opening round. He then lost a split decision to longtime top contender Joseph Benavidez, but hasn’t lost since, despite not fighting for three years.

This streak began when Cejudo defeated fellow former title challenger Wilson Reis (TKO) and current Bellator bantamweight champion Sergio Pettis (UD), prior to facing Johnson in their rematch, where he won the UFC flyweight championship via split decision in an incredible back-and-forth affair.

Cejudo then defended it against TJ Dillashaw (TKO), who moved down to 125 lbs in attempt to become two-division champion, before Cejudo became two-division champion in his next fight by stopping Marlon Moraes (TKO) in round three. He then defended the title via TKO against another former champion in Dominick Cruz before leaving the sport in May of 2020.

Now on May 6, 2023 at UFC 288 Henry Cejudo aims to reclaim his throne after an extended absence. Does he get it done?

UFC 288 set to land at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey

As per an initial report from Wrestling Observer reporter, Ryan J. Frederick, the UFC are slated to return to the Prudential Center on May 6. For UFC 288 – booking a Newark, New Jersey event for the first time since August 2019.

I can confirm that UFC 288 on May 6 is headed to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey,” Frederick tweeted. “First UFC event in Newark since August 2019, and first PPV event there since February 2014.”

Also recently confirming his presence on the card; former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira revealed he will make his first Octagon walk since October of last year.

Standing opposite the Brazilian submission specialist is the surging Kings MMA stalwart, Beneil Dariush who meets the Sao Paulo grappler in a lightweight title eliminator in the penultimate outing of the night.

Last time out, Oliveira, the most prolific finisher and submission artist in Octagon antiquity, saw his 12-fight winning run halted in a submission loss to current division best, Islam Makhachev.

Enjoying a roughshod run through lightweight opposition, Dariush most recently added incoming UFC 285 main card feature, Mateusz Gamrot to his winning spree on the same October card in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

In their most recent visit to Newark, New Jersey – the promotion topped a ‘Fight Night’ billed card with a welterweight between former interim champion, Colby Covington, and former undisputed division gold holder, Robbie Lawler. Covington would record a unanimous decision victory at the event.

Reigning bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has been training alongside former champion Dominick Cruz.

Sterling is rumored to be set to defend his bantamweight crown for the third time, against Henry Cejudo at UFC 288 on May 6. If the bout does go ahead, Sterling will have a stern test on his hands – while it will mark three years out of the Octagon for Cejudo, he brings with him a combat pedigree like no other.

Cejudo has an Olympic gold medal to his name, along with a 125lb and 135lb UFC title, having capped off his run in the UFC with wins over Demetrious Johnson, T.J. Dillashaw, Marlon Moraes, and Cruz.

To help with his preparation, Sterling has enlisted the help of Cejudo’s former opponent and bantamweight royalty, Cruz.

Aljamain Sterling trains with Cruz

I actually just trained with Cody Garbrandt, now I’m training with Dom,” Sterling said. “Two people I kinda went like..  Well we didn’t have the most liking of each other, but with Dom it’s different. I was respectfully calling him out. But, he’s cool.

The main premise of this is to just get good training, good quality work, a good partner who’s smart. I may pick his brains to see if there was anything that he saw.

Aljamain Sterling & Dominick Cruz

Sterling is coming off a win over T.J. Dillashaw back in October, in a fight that was over before it even really got started after a reoccurring shoulder injury handicapped Dillshaw almost immediately.

As for Cruz, now 37, the multiple-time world champion last fought against rising contender Marlon Vera, where he would be knocked out for only the second time in his career which has spanned almost two decades. It’s unclear who Cruz will face next, but he doesn’t seem willing to hang up the gloves just yet.

Should more fighters train together like Aljamain Sterling and Dominick Cruz?
