UFC CBO Hunter Campbell flew to Dublin in last-ditch attempt to save Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler

The UFC went to great lengths to try and salvage Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon.

Weeks before he was scheduled to make his quote-unquote “greatest comeback in combat sport’s history,” the promotion decided to pull the plug, but not before pulling out all the stops to salvage their biggest ticket of 2024. Per a report from Ariel Helwani, the UFC’s Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell, flew to McGregor’s native Dublin to try and save the main event from falling through.

Sadly, Campbell was unsuccessful, prompting the promotion to replace the fight with another high-stakes headliner. Instead of McGregor vs. Chandler, fans will now see a light heavyweight championship rematch as both reigning titleholder Alex Pereira and No. 1 ranked contender Jiri Prochazka will step in on short notice to save UFC 303.

The Promotion Adds two more big fights to UFC 302

Also added to the card was a co-main event clash between Brian Ortega and Diego Lopes, as well as a contest between Carlos Ulberg and Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith. Ulberg was originally scheduled to face Jamahal Hill at the event, but ‘Sweet Dreams’ was forced to bout out due to an injury.

Fortunately, it sounds as though the injury that forced Conor McGregor out of the event is not severe.

At this time, it is unclear if the UFC will reschedule McGregor’s long-awaited fight with the former Bellator champion, but Helwani did add in his report that the promotion is eyeing a new date in either August or September.

Not even the UFC’s Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell could stop himself from laughing at Merab Dvalishvili’s antics at UFC 288.

Neither Dvalishvili nor current bantamweight world champion Sean O’Malley competed at the event, but they certainly stole the show following the evening’s headliner. Then title-holder Aljamain Sterling had just finished scoring a split decision win over Henry Cejudo to retail the gold when his next opponent, O’Malley, stepped inside the Octagon for a face-off.

Also there blending into the background was Sterling’s friend and training partner Dvalishvili, who slyly collected O’Malley’s jacket as things started to heat up between ‘Sugar’ and the ‘Funk Master.’

UFC

Never one to pass up an opportunity to troll a rival, ‘The Machine’ quickly put on O’Malley’s jacket and hopped on top of the cage, infuriating O’Malley.

During the recently released Fight Inc: Inside The UFC documentary, fans got a behind-the-scenes look at the aftermath with Dvalishvili being confronted by Cambell.

Campbell reveals he had just paid dvalishvili’s ‘legal bill’ before uFC 288 jacket heist

Initially, Campbell appears to be frustrated by the bantamweight contender’s decision-making, noting that he had already paid a legal fee for Dvalishvili.

“I literally just said no more fights, no more problems. I just paid your legal bill and you put on his f*cking jacket,” Campbell said.

However, Campbell couldn’t keep a straight face for long, letting out a laugh and embracing the Georgian, adding, “I literally just wrote a f*cking check and he’s climbing like a monkey up a f*cking scaffold.”

Conor McGregor pleads with UFC exec Hunter Campbell to book return in June get the ball rolling

As far as ex-two-weight champion, Conor McGregor is concerned – once his media tour for ‘Road House’ and St. Patrick Day festivities are behind him, he’s back in fight camp for an expected UFC return later this summer – urging Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell to book him against Michel Chandler on June 29.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has yet to feature inside the Octagon since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Dustin Poirier back in 2021.

And calling continually for his return to fighting this year particularly, McGregor claimed he was set to headline a slated UFC 303 card at the end of June during International Fight Week – claiming he is set to take on Michael Chandler at the middleweight limit.

However, as far as promotional CEO, Dana White is concerned, McGregor is not in line to fight on the card – revealing a comeback for the Dubliner is more likely to take place towards the fall of this year.

Travelling to the US earlier this week to embark on a promotional tour ahead of release of ‘Road House’ – where he stars alongside award-winning actor, Jake Gyllenhaal, McGregor urged organizational Chief Business Officer, Campbell to finally float a bout agreement his way to make a return at UFC 303 at the end of June.

“I’m hoping to get it,” Conor McGregor said of a fight at UFC 303 during media obligations ahead of the premiere of ‘Road House’ later this month. “You can tell Hunter (Campbell), your man, that you know – to star to get the ball rolling.”

“You know, I’ve got this workload here,” Conor McGregor explained. “A lot of press, a lot of partying at St Patrick’s [Day], and after that, I’m in fight camp. I got my team here, we’re ready to go, so hopefully June 29. – please, and we’ll get going.”

As well as a potential fight against The Ultimate Fighter 31 foe, Chandler, Straight Blast Gym native, McGregor has vowed to fight at UFC 306 in September to boot – calling for a trilogy rubber match against promotional veteran, Nate Diaz in a massive Las Vegas Sphere showdown

Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson reportedly told UFC Chief Business Officer, Hunter Campbell, how a ride in the latter’s Bentley – would likely help him decide whether or not he would save last weekend’s UFC 279 card, and fight Nate Diaz on a days’ notice.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion under the promotion’s banner and The Ultimate Fighter 13 victor, entered last week’s UFC 279 card, originally slated to fight Li Jingliang.

However, on Friday of fight week, event headliner, Khamzat Chimaev missed the welterweight limit of 171lbs for his main event fight with Diaz – tipping the scales at 178.5lbs for the bout. With the matchup in jeopardy, the promotion floated a potential welterweight fight between Ferguson and Diaz.

And as per a report from ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto, who detailed the scenario in which the organization attempted to save their flagship event, Tony Ferguson, who was contacted about the possibility of fighting Diaz on short notice, made a leftfield proposition in order to speed up his decision-making.

Spotting the aforenoted, Campbell’s Bentley vehicle parked outside the UFC Apex facility, Tony Ferguson – half joking, claimed that he would likely do his best thinking regarding saving the main event against Diaz, if he drove the car – with the Chief Business Officer tossing the keys to the Oxnard native.

“You take the car for as long as you want,” Hunter Campbell said. “I don’t give a sh*t about the car.”

Ferguson is said to have returned to the UFC Apex facility 45 minutes later – Bentley in tow, before agreeing to face Diaz in the main event of UFC 279.

Tony Ferguson eventually suffered a fourth round submission loss at UFC 279

Battling back-and-forth over the course of four rounds against the Stockton veteran at the T-Mobile Arena, Ferguson, who took the opening three rounds on one of the judge’s scorecards, eventually gave up a fourth round guillotine choke submission loss to Diaz

Henry Cejudo Meets UFC Brass, Targets “B*tch” Aljamain Sterling For Return Fight

Henry Cejudo

Former UFC two-division champ Henry Cejudo appears to be a step closer to his return to fighting after meeting with two of the most influential men of the company.

Henry Cejudo ruled the lighter weight classes during his time in the promotion to become the champion at both flyweight and bantamweight. After winning his last outing against Dominick Cruz in 2020, Cejudo made a surprise announcement about his retirement from the sport. Many speculated about his seriousness over the decision while UFC president Dana White opted to take him on his word.

Hoping to gain more leverage in negotiations, Cejudo hung up his gloves being at the very top of his game as a double champion. This means that he will likely command more money as the promotion would have to convince him to come out of retirement with more cash. He has been teasing a comeback to fighting ever since retiring.

Earlier this month, Cejudo re-entered the USADA drug-testing pool after a two-year hiatus. Ali Abdelaziz, his manager, reported the news to ESPN after which “Triple C” took to social media to post a screenshot of the confirmation.

Abdelaziz took to Twitter to share the meeting between Henry Cejudo and two of the most powerful men in the UFC. The double champ met with UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby and Hunter Campbell, the Chief Business Officer for the promotion. Both men have garnered a notorious reputation in the community and largely dictate the careers of their fighters deciding who they will face next.

Henry Cejudo calls out “b*tch” Aljamain Sterling

Having never lost either of his belts inside the octagon, Henry Cejudo vacated them shortly after his last fight at UFC 249. ‘The Messenger’ is aiming for the current UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling for his return bout as he addressed him as “the number one contender”.

“I’m coming back for these tomato cans and I’m going to right the wrong! Aljolame you the number one contender Bitch @funkmasterMMA@danawhite

Sterling unified his UFC title with a split decision win over former interim titleholder Petr Yan at UFC 273 this month. Aljo wasted no time in responding to Cejudo with brevity.

A third fight with Yan could be on the cards but not in the near future. For his next opponent, Aljo may face T.J. Dillashaw who has remained in the mix of title contention to challenge the champion.

With Cejudo inching his way closer to being back in the UFC, it’s unclear if he could get a shot at the title or will have to start with a top contender eliminator bout as expressed by Dana White in the past.

Do you think Henry Cejudo will get a shot at Aljamain Sterling in his return?
